Thought to Ponder – One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Happy New Year! There’s something special about this time of the year that should remind you to start every day with an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude turns what we have into enough, denial into acceptance, chaos to order, and confusion to clarity.

Here’s three stages of gratitude that’s important to keep in the forefront of your mind:

  • Recognition. Recognize that you will be okay in any situation.
  • Acknowledgement. Acknowledge that you are grateful for all that you have.
  • Appreciation. Appreciate people in your life who have been there for you.

TIPS FOR STARTING A GRATITUDE JOURNAL

Gratitude helps you fall in love with the life you already have. – Unknown Author

A gratitude journal is a diary of things for which one is grateful. Gratitude journals are used by individuals who wish to focus their attention on the positive things in their lives. Start a gratitude journal to include a personal reflection (goals, thoughts, feelings), affirmation, scriptures, poems, quotes, kind gestures (writing notes, letters, or making phone calls). Be creative and honest. This process will change your life in a positive and uplifting way.

Here’s some tips to help you start a gratitude journal:

  • Choose a journal or notebook that will inspire you to write. You can purchase a journal or make it. Some people prefer lined pages and other people prefer unlined pages. It’s up to you.
  • Determine when you’ll write. When you want to create a new habit, the easiest thing is to do it together with something you’re already doing in your life. For example, add journaling to your morning or bedtime routine. Yes, it is that simple.
  • Use journal prompts to help you get the most from your journaling experience. When you use different journal prompts, you will quickly learn which gives you the best feeling and inspire you to change. Note – I include journal prompts at the end of each blog post.
  • Connect with the emotion. When you experience that feeling, write down what you’re grateful for and enjoy the feeling of gratefulness. Be open and honest throughout the process.
  • Do what works for you. Remember, there are no rules to follow. Try it throughout this difficult time and I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Gratitude is a lifestyle that you choose. Overtime, choosing gratitude means choosing joy. It’s a choice that requires constantly renewing of your mind with the truth of God’s Word, setting your heart to inspire others with creativity from within, and disciplining your tongue to speak words that reflect God’s goodness and His grace. May your days be filled with love, happiness, laughter, and gratitude.

Thought to Ponder – Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Hope you enjoyed your holiday with family and friends! Today I want to focus on trusting your vision and goals as 2022 comes to an end. It’s important to set aside time to think about your future and to set realistic goals that will help you be happy as well as successful. What better time to create your 2023 vision and goals than now?

I plan to:

  • Define vision and goal.
  • Discuss why it is important to create a vision.
  • Discuss ways to refine and support your vision.
  • List 5 kinds of realistic goals.
  • Provide tips to help you create a vision board.

DEFINE VISION & GOAL

Where there is no vision, there is no hope. – George Washington Carver

Let’s define vision and goal.

Vision can be defined as the faculty or state of being able to see or the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.

Goal can be defined as the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

When I think of vision, words like sight, dream, imagination, creativity, future, goals and reflection all come to mind. Take a moment and create your own list. Since we are different in many ways, our lists may vary, but our vision should remain the same – to strive for success and accomplishments; to feel happy and full of worth. Would you agree?

CREATING A VISION

A vision is the art of seeing things invisible. – Jonathan Swift

Now, that you have decided to create your 2023 vision and goals, it’s important to discuss why this process is so important in our lives. Choices we make in life create consequences, whether good or bad. Unfortunately, without a clear vision or direction, we fail to acquire the quality of life results we expect.

Keep these important facts in mind when preparing your 2023 vision:

  • A vision begins as an idea in your imagination.
  • The idea turns into the intention and will to achieve that idea.
  • The vision is the articulation of the desired future that you strive to achieve.
  • A well-defined vision leads to satisfaction and a sense of meaning in life.
  • Partial visions lead to an imbalance life and no purpose.
  • Visions should come from internal needs, not on the reflections of others.
  • The lack of a clear vision leads to settling for whatever happens.

Remember, a shared vision empowers and impacts quality of life only if you allow it.

WAYS TO REFINE & SUPPORT YOUR VISION

It is better to aim high and miss then to never aim at all. – Unknown Author

Refining and clarifying the idea along with intentions to achieve it are what turn into the vision. Remember, creating a vision is a process of nurturing and cultivating ideas and imagination.

Here’s some ways to refine and support your own vision:

  • Differentiate between the future that would become real and the future of your vision.
  • The vision must be about changing that which is likely to occur, rather than changing that “what is”.
  • Share the vision and help others recognize their importance in the realization of the vision.
  • Lock onto the vision, make it a way of life, a part of every decision you make.
  • Become aware of and utilize the natural forces that move toward achievement of your vision.
  • Avoid, reduce or neutralize those things that lead you away from your vision.
  • Anticipate resistance in the accomplishment of your vision.

In other words, don’t be afraid to envision the implications of successfully achieving your vision in 2023. Step out in faith, make a plan, and work toward achieving it.

5 KINDS OF REALISTIC GOALS

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible. – Tony Robbins

After you have created your 2023 vision, it’s time to focus on setting realistic goals for your life. Even though there are many different kinds of goals, I want to focus on the following 5 realistic goals that will help you improve your life in 2023 and beyond:

  • Career Goals – Let’s face it, we spend a lot of time focusing on our careers after graduation because we want to be successful. Career choices should be based on:
  • Knowing what you’re passionate about in life.
  • Determining long-term career aspirations as a whole.
  • Creating short-term tasks to help you achieve your long-term career aspirations.

Example – I love to write and inspire others, so I am pursuing a writing career.

  • Finance Goals – Now, that you have a successful career, it’s important to have your finances in order. Create finance goals to help you:
  • Become financially secure.
  • Reduce your risk to spend frivolously and be wasteful.
  • Learn how to save money so will be prepared to handle future hardships.

Example – I plan to open a savings account so I can build an emergency fund to help cover unexpected expenses that may occur.

  • Health Goals – Set health goals so you will live a long, enjoyable life. Take time to evaluate your diet, fitness levels, and family health history. Create health goals to:
  • Modify your lifestyle to improve your overall health and well-being.
  • Encourage daily meal planning and prep.
  • Make time for daily exercise, meditation and yoga.
  • Schedule your routine doctor visits.

Example – I plan my daily exercise and write it in my planner like any other appointment.

  • Personal Development Goals – Throughout life, it is important to explore your personal gifts, talents and interests. Strive to improve your life and increase your personal growth by:
  • Taking a class to learn a new skill or to strengthen your expertise.
  • Joining a local group or club while pursuing a new hobby.
  • Volunteering in your local community.

Example – If you love to cook or draw, sign up for a local class to improve your skillset.

  • Spiritual Goals – Spend time feeding your spirit so you can live in line with your personal values. You can practice:
  • Reading God’s Word, praying, and meditating.
  • Self-reflection while reading inspirational books.
  • Listening to positive and uplifting podcasts.

Example – I will schedule time to write in a gratitude journal every morning and night.

If you relax your mind and allow your dreams to be your wings, then your vision will come to pass. Don’t be afraid to DREAM BIG and know that you’re going to accomplish great things in life!

Vision Board Sample

TIPS TO HELP YOU CREATE A VISION BOARD

Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe. – Oprah Winfrey

Have you ever created a vision board for yourself or your family? If not, what better time to think about creating one. A vision board is a visualization tool which refers to a board of any sort used to build a collage of words and pictures that represent your goals, dreams and/or vision. By placing visual representations of your goals into one space, you can easily visualize them frequently.

Follow these important tips to create an awesome and inspiring vision board:

  • Purchase a poster board from your local Dollar store or Office Supply store.
  • Put the year at the top of your vision board so you are clear on where you’re going for the year ahead.
  • Create a list of goals you’d like to achieve in the next year. In order to visualize your goals, first you need to know what they are. What do you want your ideal life to look like in the new year and beyond?
  • Collect a bundle of old magazines with beautiful pictures or search online.
  • Find pictures that represent your goals and inspire you. Focus on how the images make you feel.
  • Make a collage out of your photos. Once you have collected enough photos, it’s time to make your vision board.
  • Add motivational “affirmation words” and/or positive quotes that represent how you want to feel. For example, I want to feel joyful, powerful, fearless, loved, strong, healthy, loving and financially free.
  • Place your vision board somewhere you can see it every day. Then, make time to look at it and meditate on it at least once per day.

It’s a good idea to create a new vision board each year. As you continue to grow, evolve and expand, your dreams will too. Speak to the Universe and believe it is already yours. Be grateful for the good that is already present in your life. Acknowledge the presence of God and any goals you have already achieved in your life. So, what are you waiting for? Begin creating your 2023 vision and goals today!

The loneliest walk you’ll ever take is the one down the road of grief. – Author Unknown

Thought to Ponder – The “happy holidays” can be the least wonderful time of the year when we are mourning the death of a loved one.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I am truly lost and broken on today. It has been 7 years since my beautiful mother left her earthly body to be in heaven. I realize deep in my heart that she is in a better place where she will no longer be in pain while struggling to breathe due to suffering from severe COPD. I watched her change from an independent, vibrant, and feisty woman to one who struggled to care for herself on a daily basis. Watching her go through this terrible transition honestly broke me down to my core. It hurt me so much because I could not do anything to help her overcome this awful illness that she had to endure. Instead of staying in this deep depression and dark state, I chose to create this safe space to inspire others through my gift of writing.

11 WAYS TO COPE WITH GRIEF DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Missing you comes in waves, tonight I’m drowning. – Unknown Author

The holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger or dread for anyone dealing with an illness, grief or the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, grief can also magnify the stress that is often already felt during the holidays. On the other hand, it’s important to note that it’s alright to have a good time in spite of your grief. Just allow yourself to feel whatever your heart is feeling in the moment and have your trusted support team established.

Here’s 11 effective ways to cope with grief during the holiday season:

  • Be patient with yourself and others – The grief process can be exhausting and overwhelming. Be patient with yourself and extend that same compassion and understanding to others.
  • Offer yourself some grace – Give yourself permission to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. If you feel sad, allow the tears to come; if you feel angry, allow yourself to vent some steam in a safe manner.
  • Be kind to yourself – Be sure to get plenty of rest and nourishment you need; do not take on more than you can handle; if you need to be alone, then honor that. If you desire the affection of others, seek it out.
  • Openly communicate your preferences to others – Be prepared to have an open dialogue with your family and friends to ensure everyone’s grief is acknowledged. This would be a great time to determine if the holiday tradition will continue or if everyone will create a new tradition.
  • Ask for and accept help – It’s okay to tell your loved ones the best way that they can help you during this difficult time. Remember, ask and you shall receive.
  • Set healthy boundaries – Give yourself permission to “do things differently” this year as needed and choose to participate only if you’re ready and feel comfortable.
  • Focus on what you can control – Observe your surroundings and relationships. Then, do what makes you happy.
  • Find a way to honor your memories – Create a special way to memorialize your loved one. For example, light a candle, arrange to have a prayer vigil, release balloons, plant a tree, or create a stone garden.
  • Find support – Sharing your feelings is often the best way to get through them and finding people you can talk to will help. Family and friends can be a great support during times of grief. If they are unavailable, seek professional help from a licensed therapist, a grief counselor or grief support group in your area.
  • Acknowledge your grief reactions – It’s important to acknowledge that this season you may look or feel different. You may encounter the inevitable waves of grief and/or you may be surprised by moments of love, joy or hope.
  • Make a difference in your community – Give to your favorite charity organization or purchase a gift for a needy child. Consider volunteering at a nursing home, hospital, hospice, children’s shelter or soup kitchen. This can help you cope with your grief by contributing to the greater good within your community.

Keep in mind, the best gift you can give anyone you love is that of being true to yourself and living your life to the fullest, even as you adjust to the loss of a loved one during the holidays.

GRIEF AFFIRMATIONS

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom. – Rumi

In order for you to experience the power of grief affirmations, it is important for you to feed your spirit with love and include grief affirmations in your daily routine. For example, I choose to feel good about myself and life’s journey each day. Even when I am feeling sad or depressed, deep inside I aspire to be a giver. A giver of life, a giver of hope, and a giver of strength. This kind of thinking will help you overcome life’s challenges, such as grief, and improve your overall well-being.

Here’s some grief affirmations to help you get started on your journey to healing:

  • In my sadness, I have learned to love and care for myself.
  • I acknowledge that I am never alone in my grief.
  • I treat myself with kindness, respect and compassion.
  • I allow myself to feel my grief and then let go.
  • I take comfort in the memories of my loved one.
  • I am thankful and feel fortunate to have known you.
  • I give myself time and space to grieve, process my feelings, and heal.
  • I appreciate how much love and positivity my loved one brought to this world.
  • I am patience with my healing process.
  • I trust in the healing process and remain confident.
  • I will give myself time to heal and remain optimistic about the future.
  • I embrace my experiences and know acceptance is the first step to finding peace within.

Repeat the grief affirmations 1 to 2 times per day so it will be a constant reminder of what you are aiming for. Shift your focus and attention towards thoughts and feelings that are both positive and constructive. Start using these affirmations along with journal prompts today, and watch the quality of your life improve throughout your journey. Focus on positive changes and you will get positive results. With time, I know I will learn to live and express myself differently, but for now writing is my escape. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

WAYS TO NAVIGATE LIFE’S JOURNEY

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. – Lao Tzu

Today, right in this present moment, I want to take time to reflect on how to navigate life’s journey. I honestly look at where I am today, and I look at how I came to be here. I acknowledge the darkness and the light that shines within. Each day I focus on my vision of positive changes that I need to make in my life so that I may heal and grow in the most beautiful way possible.

Here’s some great ways to help you navigate life’s journey:

  • Every day do something that will lead you closer to God. (Read & Study God’s Word, Pray, Meditate or Listen to Gospel Music)
  • Thrive on happiness, a calm mind, and good health. (Reading, Journaling, Exercising, Walking in Nature, Practice Meditation or Listening to an Inspirational Podcast)
  • Have faith, be courageous, and dream big. (Keep Believing, Trusting, and Hoping)
  • Strive for greatness and embrace change along the way. (Be Your Own Inspiration, Be Flexible, and Open Minded)
  • Don’t procrastinate. Think positive and plan ahead. (Observe Everything Around You, Stay Focused, and Create a Vision for Your Life)
  • Love to no end, be grateful, choose joy and be kind. (Spread Love to Others, Nurture Your Grateful Heart, and Throw Kindness Around Like Confetti)
  • Be strong enough to let go and wise enough to wait for what you deserve. (Show Strength, Courage, and Wisdom)

Now, this will not be an easy task, but it is a necessary one for you to grow into your better self. However, I do realize this journey has no rules, no right or wrong answers. I accept my journey for what it is, and I acknowledge that only I can do my healing work. Don’t be afraid to make this process personal.

Even though there are 5 stages of grief and loss, people who are grieving do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order or experience all of them. The stages of grief and mourning are universal in nature and are experienced by people from all walks of life, across many cultures. Mourning occurs in our lives in response to an individual’s own terminal illness, the loss of a close relationship, or to the death of a valued being, human or animal. While mourning, we spend different lengths of time working through each step and express each stage with different levels of intensity. Here’s the 5 stages of grief and loss as defined by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross:

  • Denial & Isolation – The first reaction is to deny and isolate yourself from the reality of the situation. Most people block out the painful words and hide from the facts. Some people will believe that nothing is of any value any more, not even life itself. For most people, this stage of grief and loss is a temporary response that carries us through the first wave of pain.
  • Anger – As denial and isolation leaves us, reality and its pain re-emerge. Now, the intense emotion people feel turns into anger. The anger may be toward objects, complete strangers, friends or family. Even though deep down inside the person knows this feeling of anger is wrong, they may even be directing it toward dying or deceased loved ones as well.
  • Bargaining – In the next stage, there are feelings of helplessness and vulnerability as a way to regain control through a series of “if only” statements, such as “If only we had sought medical attention sooner” or “If only we got a second opinion from another doctor.” Unfortunately, this is an attempt to bargain with God or our higher power in order to postpone our pain. Guilt often accompanies bargaining as well. The person believes there was something they could have done differently to have helped save their loved ones’ life.
  • Depression – In the next stage, the person may start to be overwhelmed with sadness or regret which turns into worry. This phase may be eased by simple reassurance from others around them. Another phase of depression is when the person is more private and tries to bid a farewell to their loved one in silence. In this case, a hug or a kind gesture will comfort them.
  • Acceptance – Reaching this stage of grieving is a gift not afforded to everyone. Death may be sudden and unexpected, or we may never see beyond our anger or denial. Unfortunately, this phase is marked by withdrawal and calm.

Please keep in mind that everyone grieves differently. There is no right or wrong way. Some people will wear their emotions on their face and be outwardly emotional. Other people will experience their grief more internally and may not cry at all. Remember, do not judge how a person choose to experience grief, as each person will experience it differently.

WAYS TO NURTURE YOUR MIND, BODY & SPIRIT WHILE COPING WITH GRIEF

You must learn to master a new way to think before you can master a new way to be. – Marianne Williamson

Sometimes I wish time would stand still and I don’t have to relive the pain that comes during this time of the year. While everyone else is excited for the holidays, I dread it with everything within me. The holidays are just not the same without my mother physically being here. No amount of journaling or therapy sessions will save you from the emotional turmoil that you experience and continue to feel throughout the grieving process.

Nevertheless, I’ve learned that it’s important to nurture your mind, body and spirit while coping with grief. Here’s a few different ways to help you get started along this journey:

  • Read and study God’s Word.
  • Seek God’s face each day through prayer and guided meditation.
  • Pray a specific prayer for positive change in and around your life.
  • Practice mindfulness and stay in the present.
  • Set personal goals and a plan to achieve them.
  • Fuel your body with healthy food options.
  • Exercise daily and/or try new yoga poses.
  • Change your mental focus and environment.
  • Setup a daily routine using a To-Do List.
  • Focus on gratitude and find what you are grateful for each day.
  • Write in your journal to get your thoughts on to paper and out of your head.
  • Make time for self-reflection. Go for a walk, read, listen to music, meditate or color.

However, if you feel your mental stability is getting worse throughout the grieving process, seek professional help in the form of therapy from a licensed therapist or social worker, medication to treat depression or anxiety, or support groups to help share your feelings with like-minded individuals.

Worrying is a waste of time. It doesn’t change anything. It just clouds your mind and steals your happiness. – Unknown Author

Thought for today – Not once does the Bible say, “Worry about it” or “Stress over it” or “Figure it out.” But over and over the Bible clearly says, “TRUST GOD.”

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! It has been more than two months since I’ve posted here. Lately, I have found it very difficult to focus on writing projects, to limit my worrying and to trust God for everything pertaining to my life. I had to take a mental break from researching and writing, but now I’m back. As I have stated before, I promised myself, that I would write about topics that I personally experience so I can help others who may be going through similar life changing situations. If you live your life constantly worrying about things that are out of your control or have anxiety that cause you to stray away from things you love to do, then it’s time to worry less and trust God.

SCRIPTURES

Old Testament Scripture – Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

New Testament Scripture – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

MY STORY

Anxiety comes from trying too hard to control the future. – Unknown

What’s my story related to worry and anxiety? I’m going to be honest, I never really worried a lot or felt anxiety to the point where I would not do certain things until my mother passed away in 2015. It was at this point that I felt like a total failure because I could not help my mother fight her Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It was so difficult just watching her breathing get worse and worse. My mother was a small woman with strength of a lion, but COPD broke her body down quickly right before my eyes.

Even as I write these words, emotions begin to stir around inside of me, but I continued writing so I can help someone else who may be experiencing the same thing. It’s hard to admit sometimes, but the grieving process has been very difficult for me, but I turned to writing as a way to release my pain and emptiness inside. I am glad to say that I no longer blame myself for my mother’s death. I realize I had no control of her chronic illness and God’s timing. This process has shown me that you can learn different ways to handle worry and anxiety throughout life, but it’s fair to say that it may never leave your body for good, it’s just resting inside waiting for an opportunity to arise.

DEFINITIONS

Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles, it takes away today’s peace. – Unknown Author

Did you know that worry and anxiety often times goes hand in hand? Let’s define both.

Anxiety can be defined as a feeling that lives inside us and blocks us from fully living the life we want to live. Anxiety has various symptoms that can be felt anywhere in the body. Anxiety can happen at any time, and it can influence our thoughts, emotions, actions and physical health.

On the other hand, worry can give way to anxiety or unease. Worry allows one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles surrounding one’s life. Worries are a chain of thoughts based in words. For example, “What will happen if” … “It will be terrible when” … “What if I can’t”.

WORRY TRIGGERS

Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrows; it empties today of its strengths. – Corrie Ten Boom

Let’s face it, we all have issues that we worry about, right? Sometimes we’re not even aware of why we’re worrying, when we’re doing it or what we tend to worry about the most. We just know that we often feel anxious, and we find ourselves stuck in a vicious cycle of worry. One of the ways to break this vicious cycle is to be aware of which things trigger our anxiety.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself when determining your worry triggers:

  • Is it when you’re in certain places?
  • Is it particular times of the day?
  • Is it when you’re around certain people?

Many different things can trigger worry and understanding your particular triggers can help you process and establish ways to respond to your anxious feelings. Keep in mind that anxiety can trick you into believing your thoughts are reality.

FEELING OVERWHELMED

You can’t calm the storm…so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass. – Timber Hawkeye

When you’re feeling anxious, you struggle to distinguish what you’re actually experiencing and what your thoughts are projecting. Begin to divert your attention from the thoughts inside your head to what is real around you. Pay attention to what you’re doing right now in this very moment, not on your worries or anxiety.

Here’s a few suggestions that you can use when you’re feeling overwhelmed:

  • Take slow, deep breaths, as many as you need to in order to feel calm.
  • While breathing slowly and deeply, visualize a peaceful, soothing place. Examples may include walking on the beach, taking a hike in the woods, reading a good book, sitting in a meditation pose, doing yoga, etc.
  • You can pair deep breathing exercises with aromatherapy using a candle or essential oil diffuser to infuse the air with a calming, relaxing scent such as lavender, rose, bergamot or chamomile.
  • Drink a soothing, noncaffeinated tea. Great herbs for reducing anxiety include lavender, chamomile, passionflower, hawthorn, kava, ginseng and lemon balm.
  • Ground yourself physically in a way that feels comfortable. For example, you may sit in a chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor or you can stand with your feet planted on the floor and your back pressed against a wall.
  • Notice negative thoughts and replace them with simple positive ones. For example, I can’t handle this becomes I am handling this right now and I know this anxiety will soon pass.

WORRY LESS AND TRUST GOD

Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere. – English Proverb

It’s impossible for you to completely eliminate worry and anxiety from your life, but you can significantly lessen its hold over your life. Part of this process is learning when it might show up (triggers) and coming up with a plan to deal with it when it does (solutions).

Here’s some great ways to worry less and trust God:

  • Pray and read God’s Word daily.
  • Determine the source of the worry, so you can do something about it.
  • Allow yourself time to worry (10 to 15 minutes).
  • Understand your specific symptoms. What are your thoughts when your anxiety escalates? In what situations do your symptoms intensify? Lessen?
  • Know what works for you. Which strategies are helpful in moments of high anxiety? Examples could be deep breathing exercises, mindfulness exercises, meditation, journaling or talking with a support person.
  • Ditch the small stuff and put things in perspective.
  • Give into laughter and smile more.
  • Engage with positive people.
  • Schedule therapy sessions with a mental health professional. Be open and honest.
  • Write down your thoughts and feelings in your journal or notebook. Then, reflect on them throughout your journey.

Although experiencing worry and anxiety in our lives are natural, when they become chronic and trapping your mind in vicious cycles with no resolutions, is when they become a problem. Stop using your energy to worry. Instead, use your energy to believe, create, love, grow, manifest, heal, and trust God. Be blessed!

AFFIRMATIONS TO HELP YOU STOP WORRYING

Affirmations can be used to change your current mindset, boost your self-confidence, mood, and self-esteem. Through the power of repetition, you’re able to reconstruct your thought patterns, beliefs, and ideals in your subconscious mind.

Here’s some affirmations to help you let go of stress, worry, and anxiety:

  • As I breathe, I am calm and relaxed.
  • I am strong and courageous.
  • My thoughts and feelings are valid.
  • I live peacefully alongside all of my emotions and worry.
  • I accept what is happening in my life, moment by moment.

Today’s Special Thought – Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! It has been a while since I’ve written an inspirational blog post for you. Today, I want to express the reasons why I choose writing to escape while standing still. Sometimes I write because I am happy, and sometimes I write when I am sad. However, the main reason why I have a passion for writing is to escape. When I write, I like to escape from life as I know it each day. I like to escape the pain and misery of losing my parents some years ago. Losing your parents leaves a hole in your heart that can never be filled. I like to escape the stress and frustration of parenting adopted children with disabilities and behavior problems. I like to escape the racism of this wicked world for not only having black skin, but also for being a woman. I like to escape from mental illness both depression and anxiety. I like to escape from those sleepless nights when I just listen to my thoughts go on and on. If you allow it to, writing will help you express your feelings and help you cope with challenges that you face throughout your life.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself throughout your journey:

  • Have you taken time to renew your inspiration lately?
  • Are you inspired to become better than you were yesterday?
  • What drives you to push forward when obstacles arise in your life?
  • Who inspires you to reach for your dreams and goals throughout your life?

10 STEPS FOR WRITING TO ESCAPE WHILE STANDING STILL

The fact that I’m still standing on my own two feet, in a world that has tried its best to knock me down over and over again, proves only one truth; I am unbreakable. – Stephanie Bennett-Henry

As you’re thinking about the previous questions, I have another one for you to think about. Have you ever felt like you keep moving and moving throughout life, but you are actually standing still? But when you really think about your internal happiness, health and spiritual well-being, you have to be honest with yourself. Your life is really not changing in a positive way. There is no personal growth. You’re scared to be spontaneous and have fun. You never want to leave your comfort zone. There is very little sparkle within your circle of friends.

Now, if this sounds familiar have no fear. Just keep reading and I promise you will receive an inspirational word that will not only help you overcome this season in your life, but you will be able to make a mental connection with your body and spirit as well.

Here’s 10 steps for writing to escape while standing still:

  • Step 1. Make sure to be realistic while putting your thoughts into perspective honoring your personal beliefs.
  • Step 2. Don’t be afraid to prioritize things that matter most to you in your life right now.
  • Step 3. Remove all negativity, both people and things.
  • Step 4. Don’t be afraid to say NO to others and think positive thoughts throughout your day.
  • Step 5. Start using a calendar or planner to organize your appointments and errands.
  • Step 6. Create a separate To-Do List daily to stay organized and stress free.
  • Step 7. Treat your body well and with respect.
  • Step 8. Exercise daily and eat a well-balanced diet to include plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Step 9. Set realistic goals, create a plan to reach your goals and track your progress.
  • Step 10. Spend time in prayer, meditation and reading God’s Word to receive the proper guidance in your life.

As you can see, writing to escape is real and takes little effort on your part. If you don’t currently write in a journal today, take a moment and think about how journaling could help you cope with the daily challenges of life. Believe it or not, sometimes I just pick up my pen and just start writing words, not sentences. Before I even realize it, I am writing paragraphs. Writing to escape can help you clear your mind and offer you an opportunity to break free from internal bondage. Writing to escape can help you lose yourself on paper and forget about time. Most of all, writing to escape can bring about a peace and comfort that is more powerful than the stress in your life right now. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get our journals and write to escape while standing still!

POEM – STILL STANDING – Written by Latisha Porter

This poem was written based on Psalm 46:10 – Be still and know that I am God.

Despite what my life may look like from your perspective, I am still standing.

I have endured heartache and pain, but yet I am still standing.

I have been broken time and time again, but yet I am still standing.

I have known hardship and I have lost myself time and time again, but yet I am still standing.

I have experienced hurt like no other from a defiant child that I chose to adopt, but yet I am still standing.

I have suffered the loss of my parents which put a huge hole in my heart, but yet I am still standing.

I have struggled through the grieving process, anxiety and depression, but yet I am still standing.

I am standing on God’s Word and His principles which gives me inner strength to move forward in life and my faith which gives me these inspiring words to encourage you as well.

Remember my friend, God will make a way for you and me, we need only to be patient and be still.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Fill me up, Holy Spirit. Fill me up while I continue my journey here on earth. Fill me up with your presence as I write these inspirational words for my readers on today. Holy Spirit guide my every step and give me positive thoughts in the midst of turmoil. Strengthen my heart and comfort my spirit as we discuss the attributes of the Holy Spirit.

DEFINITION

The mere whisper of the Holy Spirit can drown out the thundering noise of an entire world. – David Jeremiah

Before we get started, let’s take a moment to define Holy Spirit:

Holy Spirit (noun): (In Christianity) the third person of the Trinity; God as spiritually active in the world.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is also referred to as the Spirit, the Spirit of God, and the Spirit of the Lord. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is sometimes called the Spirit of Christ.

The Holy Spirit is included in the Trinity, which is made up of 3 distinct persons: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit serves as a teacher, counselor, comforter, strengthener, inspiration, revealer of the Scriptures, convincer of sin, caller of ministers and intercessor in prayer.

THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit wants to convert the words of Scripture into transformed personalities. – David Jeremiah

The Holy Spirit helped in creation with the Father and Son, filled the prophets with the Word of God, assisted Jesus and the apostles in their missions, inspired the men who wrote the Bible, give guidance to the church, and sanctifies believers in their walk with Christ. The Holy Spirit acts as Christ’s presence on earth, counseling and encouraging Christians as they struggle with the temptations of the world. In addition, the Holy Spirit is the Comforter sent by Jesus to dwell in us and to comfort our souls during challenging times in life, such as the death of loved one, divorce, losing a job, etc.

Here’s the attributes of the Holy Spirit:

  • The Holy Spirit is a loving Comforter. He has loved us since before the creation of the world. Remember, he is the only one able to truly comfort our hearts in times of trouble. (Romans 5:5)
  • The Holy Spirit is a faithful Comforter. Remember, he loved us while we were still dead in our sins. He loves us even to the end and will never turn away from us. (Romans 15:13)
  • The Holy Spirit is an untiring Comforter. Despite our murmuring and complaining, he never loses heart or feels weary while helping us work through our issues. (John 14:26)
  • The Holy Spirit is a wise Comforter. He finds what is causing the disease within you and cures it. He offers healing to us that is acceptable in the eyes of God. (I Corinthians 2:10)
  • The Holy Spirit is a safe Comforter. The comfort of the Holy Spirit is safe for us to rest in it as well as trust it. (I Corinthians 2:13)
  • The Holy Spirit is an active Comforter. He intercedes for us, reminding us of God’s great promises and His grace. He actively leads and guides us to the perfect will of the Father. (Romans 8:26-27)
  • The Holy Spirit is an ever-present Comforter. He is always right there with us. Remember, he will never leave us alone, nor forsake us. (John 14:16)

As Christians we’re privileged to have the Holy Spirit available to us to comfort, guide, and strengthen us. We should be so grateful that Jesus thought so much of us, to give us the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives within us and will guide you through the challenges of life. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead your decision making and hide the scriptures in your heart for years to come.

Finding Spiritual Balance in the Presence of God

Finding Spiritual Balance in the Presence of God

Renew Inspiration, Finding Spiritual Balance in the Presence of God

Spiritual balance is the principle that allows the mind to be still. You cannot expect the world to settle down, everything to work out, in order for you to be happy. You have to get control of your mind. – Frederick Lenz

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! As you go through personal experiences in life, how often do you pause to reflect on the path you’re on and to find spiritual balance? Today, let’s talk about finding spiritual balance not only in your personal life, but also in the presence of God. How often do you read and study God’s Word? Do you just read your favorite Bible verse, pray for a moment, then move on with your day? In order to find spiritual balance in your life, it’s important to schedule quality time to not only read God’s Word, but also to write down your personal thoughts about the verses read and to determine how you can apply the verses to your own life.

Here are a few suggestions for beginning your spiritual journey:

  • Set a time to better engage in God’s Word and stick to your plan.
  • Gather your materials, such as Bible, notebook/journal, pen(s), highlighters, sticky notes, reference books, etc.
  • Designate a quiet space with no distractions, such as cellphones, televisions, people, noise, etc.
  • You may want to play some soft music in the background to set a relaxing mood.
  • Make sure your study area is free of clutter and well lit.
  • Pray and meditate while studying God’s Word to open your mind and heart.
  • Speak to God often to strengthen your relationship and ask Him to direct your study time.

FINDING SPIRITUAL BALANCE

By God’s wise designing we are wonderfully made, every part essential and in perfect balance laid. – Anon

To strive for spiritual balance, it is important to face each day with a positive attitude. Dig deep inside to strive for new opportunities that surround us every day. Focus on “right now” and not “what ifs”. Believe it or not, even as I type these words, it seems easier said than done. I realize this will not be an easy process for some, but to get to a better spiritual place in life, we sometimes need to place ourselves in uncomfortable situations and/or conversations. Involve yourself with like-minded individuals who build you up and not tear you down.

Here’s some ways to help you find spiritual balance within your life:

  • Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal
  • Read and be grounded in God’s Word
  • Meditate and be prayerful
  • Practice yoga and stretch routines
  • Read inspirational and spiritual books
  • Listen to a motivational podcast
  • Set some attainable goals for yourself
  • Post positive quotes where you can read them daily
  • Recite positive affirmations throughout your day

 SPIRITUAL BALANCE AND MEDITATION

My mind and body are in perfect balance. I am a harmonious being. – Louise Hay

When thinking about spiritual balance, it is important to prepare your mind, body and spirit for the journey. From experience, it is difficult to have spiritual balance without first getting the mind ready to receive our spiritual gifts from God. So, in addition to reading and studying God’s Word, it is also important to practice meditation regularly.

Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses his or her mind on a particular object, thought, or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. Remember, practice makes perfect so make sure to plan for meditation every day. It’s important to start with good breathing techniques when doing your meditation. In addition, create a peaceful and safe space where you will not be distracted during your meditation. It is important to let go of any and all frustrations throughout the meditation process. Meditation, when done correctly, offers many benefits throughout his or her weight loss journey as well.

Benefits of meditation includes, but not limited to:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Reduces impulsivity, cravings, and addictions
  • Increases resilience in hard times
  • Increases happiness and optimism
  • Helps create loving, harmonious relationships
  • Increases focus, creativity, and life satisfaction
  • Increases memory, compassion, and productivity
  • Produces a deep state of peace and well-being

How to Meditate:

  • Sit Still – Just sit still and close your eyes – Outer stillness will lead to inner stillness
  • Relax – It’s not a process – You just let go and surrender
  • Pay Attention – To nothing in particular – Just be awake and focus on self-awareness

HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE PRESENCE OF GOD

We cannot attain the presence of God because we’re already totally in the presence of God. What’s absent is awareness. – Richard Rohr

Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile and start again. The presence of God is all around us. Can you feel God’s presence right now in this very moment? God inhabits every part of our lives except for the parts that we refuse to share with Him. Would you agree? When we don’t sense God’s presence in our daily routines, it’s not because God leaves us, but it’s because we have not developed a deep awareness of God’s presence in our lives. This process takes not only practice, but it also takes commitment and the willingness to surrender to God’s will throughout our lives.

Here’s some steps to recognize the presence of God:

  • Step 1: Do everything in your life for the love of God. It is important to give God your happiness and praises as well as your pain and suffering. God is always listening because He is your protector.
  • Step 2: Look for God’s goodness in all things. Remember, it is important to notice God’s presence in both simple and great things. Acknowledge this fact often throughout your life.
  • Step 3: Create stopping points in which to rest in God. Spend quality time throughout your day to pray, meditate and communicate with God.

Now, begin finding spiritual balance and placing yourself in the presence of God, breathe deeply and be aware of his loving kindness. Always remember to put God first in everything you do. Don’t forget to acknowledge God’s presence in the simple and more complicated things in life. Spending quality time in God’s presence has to be a priority in life.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Happy Mother’s Day to all of the well-deserved women reading this blog today. My prayer is that you got a chance to relax a bit and enjoyed time with family and friends.

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. However, Mother’s Day is bittersweet for me since I lost my mother in December 2015. In honor of my mother, Rosalynn K. Russell, I wrote this poem as I struggled through my first phase of grief:

STILL HERE – Written by Latisha Porter

Still here…your spirit lives within me, I can feel you, but I cannot see;

Your beautiful face that often lit up a room, makes us wonder if you left too soon;

Still here…your presence surrounds me day by day, sometimes I cannot find the words to say;

I love you, I miss you, I cry myself to sleep;

No one seems to understand me cause my emotions are so deep.

Still here…your love will forever be in my heart, even though you’re gone, we’ll never be apart…Still here!

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS FOR MOTHERS

Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher. – Oprah Winfrey

Did you know that positive affirmations are used to reprogram the subconscious mind and to encourage us to believe certain things about ourselves or about the world and our place in it? Positive affirmations are also used to help us create the reality we want in life. Now, with that said, please recite these positive affirmations every day and look in a mirror as you say them. Repeat them until you feel it in your soul, and you begin to believe every word.

  • I am divine love.
  • I am a good mother.
  • I must take care of myself so I can take care of those I love.
  • I am an amazing mother, even as I work hard to become a better one each day.
  • There is value in everything I do.
  • Love flows into my life easily and effortlessly.
  • The love I give comes back to me tenfold.
  • I am worthy of love, support, and appreciation.
  • My needs and desires matter and they deserve to be met.
  • It’s okay to need, want, and take a break from my family to be alone.
  • Taking care of myself is not selfish, it is necessary for me to be a great mother.
