Now, let’s begin your journey of growth by answering these questions:

• Are my actions guided by love or fear?
• What do I want or need in my life?
• Is this action important to me or other people?
• Will this action bring peace or inner turmoil?

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do. – Benjamin Spock

To begin with, trusting yourself whole again is an on-going and everchanging process. So, how do you define trusting yourself whole again? Like any other thought or feeling we experience in life, our definitions may vary from person to person, but here’s how you know when you are trusting yourself whole again:

• You are a survivor.
• You practice kindness, not perfection.
• You refuse to give up on yourself.
• You are able to take care of your personal needs and safety.

• You will notice what you’re feeling.
• You will take time to pause and be silent.
• You will meditate and reconnect with your inner being.

Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see. – Mark Twain

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Finding kindness within is not as easy as it sounds. Recently, I have made a commitment to find kindness within and to practice kindness toward others on a daily basis. But what does this really mean? For me, it’s quite simple. To practice kindness, you first must find kindness within (mind, body, spirit) so you can share it with others. You must be kind hearted and be a gentle soul. You must naturally care for others and not be fake about it. Then, you have to show that you’re not selfish by showing compassion toward others as well as refraining from criticizing and/or judging people throughout your journey.

Believe it or not, kindness actually reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. Also, kindness can put us and others at ease while we’re interacting with one another. Try it next time you’re out and about. Offer a kind word or gesture to someone you meet, to someone who serves your community, or even a family member. Notice what happens. From a learning perspective, you’ll see that the effects are cumulative. The more we practice kindness, the better we get at it, it helps build our character, and it becomes who we are.

DEFINITION

Kindness (noun) – the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate; a kind act.

FUN FACTS

Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change. – Bob Kerrey

• World Kindness Day is a day that was started in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. This day is celebrated on November 13th in several countries all over the world, such as United States, Italy, India, Singapore, Nigeria, Japan, Australia, and Canada.

• Kindness is considered a virtue and is recognized as a value in many cultures and religions.

• National Random Acts of Kindness Day was started in 2004 by New Zealand and is observed on February 17th. This day can be celebrated by individuals, groups, and organizations nationwide to encourage acts of kindness.

• Kindness is a natural antidepressant because it causes a release of serotonin in our brain.

• Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK) is a US nonprofit that was founded in 1995 and has its headquarters in Denver, CO.

WAYS TO PRACTICE KINDNESS

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness. – Seneca

Here’s some ways to practice kindness throughout your day:

Be kind to yourself. Notice your self-talk. Recite positive affirmations. Practice meditation and engage in basic self-care routines.

Use your manners often. Saying thank you and you’re welcome are expressions of gratitude. A grateful heart is all it takes to express kindness.

Smile at everyone you pass or encounter. I always greet people with a warm smile and a kind word. Whether they respond or not, it makes me feel good.

Greet people with a friendly hug. A good hug can lift someone’s spirits or make them feel loved and appreciated.

Be generous and give from the heart. Donate money or clothes to charity, volunteer your time to help the needy, or even bring a gift or souvenir whenever you visit a friend. Even at home, we can lend a helping hand by offering to wash the dishes, vacuum the floor, or clean the bathrooms.

Help a stranger. You can help someone put their bags in the car, let someone go ahead of you in line, hold the door or elevator, run errands for your friend or neighbor, or hold an umbrella for someone who needs a hand.

Send good wishes. Kindness always begins with a thought. Secretly send people good intentions, wishes, and prayer.

Give praises. Giving a sincere praise to someone is an act of kindness. By giving recognition to others, we can help them to develop confidence in themselves.

Call a loved one or friend. Take a moment to call a loved one or a friend to catch up instead of sending a text. It’s refreshing to have a heart-to-heart conversation over the phone.

Send greeting cards. Send a greeting card just because to let someone know you’re thinking of them. Sometimes, the unexpected cards are the best, and they’ll make a lasting, positive impression.

DAILY AFFIRMATIONS – SPEAK KINDNESS

In a world where you can be anything, be kind. – Unknown Author

Here’s some great examples of how you can speak kindness into your life:

• I believe in myself and trust in my abilities to succeed in all I do.

• I am a beautiful soul that radiates a vibrant and beautiful form. All is well in my body and mind.

• I let the events of today go. I forgive myself and others for any mistakes that were made. I am ready to start fresh with a new day tomorrow.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Where did the summer go? I’m still trying to get back on track after our Alabama road trip last week. It was so nice to see my niece, Mariah and her grandparents. Well, fast forward to this week. I have been trying to prepare my boys for the first day of school. I cannot believe my boys return to school tomorrow.

In preparation for my boys returning to school, I could not help but think about back to school anxiety that some children experience. Some children may feel anxious about going back to school after a long summer break or others may be nervous about starting school for the very first time. Nevertheless, it is our responsibility as parents to comfort our children as much as possible during this difficult time.

CAUSES OF ANXIETY IN CHILDREN

Here’s three types of school anxiety children may face:

Separation Anxiety – When a child refuses to go to school. This type of anxiety occurs in about 4.5% of children ages 7 – 11. This type of anxiety stems from excessive worry.

Test Anxiety – This type of anxiety is usually related to a fear of failure. Also, this type of anxiety can continue into adulthood and take other forms of performance anxiety.

Social Anxiety – This type of anxiety is also known as social phobia and can occur in children as young as 13 years old.

SIGNS OF SCHOOL ANXIETY IN CHILDREN

Believe it or not, there are many signs that may exist in children who are experiencing school anxiety.

Here’s some signs to look for:

• Sleep problems, such as nightmares, panic, fear, and uneasiness.

• Tantrums when left at school or other places.

• Headaches, dizziness, or shortness of breath.

• Dry mouth, stomachache, nausea, cramps or vomiting.

• Tense muscles and complaints about body aches.

• Difficult to stay calm and still.

MANAGING SYMPTOMS

Like any challenge in life, managing anxiety symptoms will take research and commitment on your part. Remember, everyone is different so it may take some time before you find what works for you and your child.

Here’s some helpful tips that may help you control or lessen the symptoms:

• Tip 1: Cut down on foods and drinks that have caffeine, such as coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks, and chocolate. Caffeine is a mood-altering drug, and it may make symptoms of anxiety worse.

• Tip 2: Feed your child healthy foods, make sure they are exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep to help improve their mood.

• Tip 3: Make sure your child follows a relaxing bedtime routine and stick to it.

• Tip 4: Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies. Unfortunately, many contain chemicals that can make anxiety symptoms worse.

HELPFUL TIPS TO CONQUER SCHOOL ANXIETY

Now, I will be the first to tell you that it will not be easy to conquer school anxiety.

Here’s some tips to help you during this difficult time:

• Tip 1: Organize your home for back to school and allow your children to decorate the space. For example, you can create a comfortable homework area to make them feel more in control and relieve some of their anxious feelings.

• Tip 2: Get your children involved in the back to school process. For example, allow your children to make their own lunch, choose their own snacks, pack their own backpacks or choose their own school clothes.

• Tip 3: Help your child feel more comfortable about his new school environment and routines. For example, plan to take your children to visit the school and talk about the basics, such as teacher name, room number, lunch time, recess, etc.

• Tip 4: Highlight the things that make school great and positive. For example, making new friends, scheduling playdates, becoming more independent, getting new school supplies and clothes. Most importantly, allow your children to talk about their feelings. Remember, don’t talk, just listen.

• Tip 5: Make sure your children get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet. This will help the brain function better, improve their mood, and increase the ability to focus and pay attention during school hours.

• Tip 6: Involve your children in fun school activities, such as sports, music lessons, after school clubs, etc.

Remember, back to school anxiety is real, normal and understandable. Try to remind yourself that any anxiety your children may be feeling is only temporary. Before you know it, you and your family will be conquering school anxiety as you embark on a successful school year. If for some reason parents cannot help their children cope with back to school anxiety, make sure to seek the help from a health professional or a local support group.

DAILY AFFIRMATION

Be the best version of you. – Unknown Author

It’s important to lay a positive and stable foundation. The best way to do this is to speak positive words out of your mouth daily.

Here’s an example of an affirmation that you can speak into your spirit:

I inhale positive energy and exhale any fears. I will not worry about things that are out of my control. I am no longer afraid of what could go wrong. I focus on what is going right. I will calmly think of solutions to any problems that may arise. I can handle anything that comes my way.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! So, how is your summer going so far? I hope you enjoyed your 4th of July holiday with your family and friends. Unfortunately, I am exhausted some days from trying to be stronger than I feel. I even overthink my overthinking. Lately, I have been experiencing a high level of anxiety.
