Intentional living is all about focusing on your purpose and core values. SET A DAILY INTENTION

Our intention creates our reality. – Wayne Dyer

Naming your personal values is the foundation of living an intentional life. Any kind of change requires awareness and intentional action on your part. Setting a daily intention each morning is a simple practice in which you bring awareness to your own thoughts and actions. Pause for a moment and decide what you want to experience that day. Then, answer these questions in your journal or notebook:

  • What does an ideal day look like for you?
  • Why are these things important to you?
  • What are some activities that bring you fulfillment?
  • What does these activities have in common?
  • What do you wish you had more of? Less of?
  • How do you want to feel today?
  • How do you want to show up in the world?
  • What kind of energy do you want to attract?

Now, take a moment to examine your responses and commit to set a daily intention for yourself. Your daily intention may be a few words or a sentence. It may serve as a reminder of how you’d like to behave that day and the choices you’d like to make.

Simply complete the following statement in your journal or notebook:

Today I intend to ____________________________.

Examples:

  • Be present in the moment.
  • Focus on feeling good.
  • Be my most authentic self.
  • Spread love and kindness.
  • Be on time.
  • Make healthier food choices.
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes.

It’s important to recount your intentions at the end of the day. For example, in the evening or before bedtime, replay the ways you contributed to living with purpose and intention. You could do this mentally, but I suggest taking time to write in your journal or notebook to keep track of how much you’re doing things with intention each day.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! First, I want to apologize for being away for so long. Even though writing is my passion, the last few months have been a struggle for me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Despite all of the pain I’ve experienced recently, God saw fit to put an angel into my life to not only encourage me through my painful moments, but also, they suggested that I write about the joy that I am feeling now. For that blessing, I will forever be thankful.

So, today my writing focus is centered around how wonderful it feels to welcome joy back into your life once again. Now, let’s take a moment to define JOY.

JOY (noun): The emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation.

Believe it or not, you can recognize joy by the physical sensations it triggers within your whole body.

Here’s a few examples:

  • You may feel excited and warm all over.
  • Your breathing becomes faster.
  • Your heartbeat increases.
  • Your eyes may light up and begin to twinkle.
  • You may have an irrepressible smile on your face.

There’s no doubt about it, joy does not just appear in your life. You have to make the decision to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.

WHAT IS THE PUREST FORM OF JOY?

Love is spoken here. Joy is chosen here. Grace is given here. – Unknown Author

The purest form of joy can be found in ordinary moments, and those moments can happen any place where gratitude is alive. When God’s joy fills your mind, body and spirit it bestows on you a beauty that radiates from within. As you spend quality time with God (reading God’s Word, prayer, meditation, spiritual journaling), you will find that God is your sole source of joy. God brings joy into your life by answering your prayers, offering wisdom, His Word, and blessings from on high.

Here’s some ways to find your purest form of joy in life:

  • Schedule time daily to read God’s Word, pray and meditate.

  • Surround yourself with joyful and God-fearing people.
  • Talk about joyful things that you enjoy.
  • Find your passion and share it with others.
  • Sprinkle joy and positive vibes around like confetti.
  • Share your joyful experiences with others throughout life.

Remember, joy is a gift of God and should be your strong foundation so when rough times and unexpected emotions arise in your life, joy will remain constant.

Thought to Ponder – Alignment is about finding the feeling inside of the things we want and then deliberately choosing to create those feelings.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve written an inspirational blog post and I truly apologize for my absence in this safe space. Unfortunately, I have been struggling with my own mental health and family issues lately which has caused inconsistency with my writing. I’m committed to getting back on track and posting inspirational content to help inspire you to improve your life one word at a time.

Today, let’s talk about how seeking spiritual alignment through affirmations can improve your life. Affirmations are meant to help change the negative thoughts in your head and replace them with positive thoughts that remind you of the truth of who you are. This process often times will move your attention to more empowering ideas that will ultimately create an improved result.

In addition, affirmations can be another form of positive self-talk that can:

  • Help set the tone for your day.
  • Be used to target and improve any area of your life.
  • Help you overcome any negative thinking patterns.
  • Provide a reflection of the kind of life you want to live.
  • Offer ways to improve your mood and emotions.
  • Increase your self-confidence and uplift your spirit.
  • Help you set realistic goals and create a plan to reach them.

DEFINITIONS

Affirmations (noun):

The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, which means “to strengthen and make steady.” Affirmations are positive phrases or statements that we repeat to ourselves. Generally, they are used to manifest goals, dreams, or experiences we desire.

Spiritual Alignment (noun):

Being in tune with our soul’s purpose. We all have a unique reason for being on this Earth. Our actions, thoughts, emotions, and spirit are on the same page. Then, we are moving with ease in a particular direction.

HOW TO SEEK SPIRITUAL ALIGNMENT THROUGH AFFIRMATIONS

Seek to be whole not perfect. – Oprah Winfrey

Spiritual alignment is an important aspect of our lives that allows us to connect with our divine selves and experience a sense of oneness. When we are spiritually aligned, everything in our lives seems to fall into place. We feel happier, more peaceful and more content with what’s going on all around us. Lately, I have found that when used consistently, spiritual alignment can be experienced often through affirmations. If you take the time to seek spiritual alignment through affirmations, you will have the power to transform your life despite what you’re going through or the obstacles you face.

Here’s how you can start this process:

  • Create a list of affirmations that resonate with you and speak to your heart.
  • Begin with 3 to 5 affirmations until you feel more comfortable to add more.
  • Be in a quiet space with no distractions.
  • Take a few deep breaths in and out.
  • Say affirmations confidently and with purpose while looking into a mirror.
  • Repetition is key so repeat the affirmations throughout your day and be consistent.
  • Don’t move on from the affirmations you chose until you honestly feel the words hidden in your heart.

14 Ways to Establish a Self-Care Routine

14 Ways to Establish a Self-Care Routine

Renew Inspiration, 14 Ways to Establish A Self Care Routine

Self-care is important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel. – Eleanor Brown

Thought to Ponder – Put yourself at the top of your to-do list every day and the rest will fall in line.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! This is a great time of the year to discuss ways to establish a self-care routine that can help improve your health and wellness. So, what is self-care? According to The Self-Care Solution written by Suzy Reading, self-care can be defined as “any life-giving activity that restores, sustains or improves your health.” Similarly, Dr. Marni Amsellem defines self-care as “anything that you do for yourself that feels nourishing.” So, it’s safe to say that self-care is nourishment for your entire soul, mind, body, and spirit. Would you agree?

WHY SELF-CARE IS IMPORTANT

Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to others and watch yourself bloom. – Unknown Author

As we go through life, all of us experience stress on some level one way or another. It’s so important that we have the necessary tools to help promote healing and cultivate clarity in our lives.

Suzy Reading provides 3 reasons why self-care is important:

  • Stress is not going to go away. Stress is a normal part of life. In fact, life would be boring without some stress to keep us on our toes, right?
  • Stress has a cumulative effect. Stress can add up very quickly so make sure to plan for regular pressure releases throughout your day. For example, go for a walk, do a stretch routine or meditate.
  • Too much stress is dangerous. It’s a fact that too much stress makes us ill and greatly diminishes our ability to enjoy life.

Brene Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

HOW DOES SELF-CARE HELP?

Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure. – Oprah Winfrey

Suzy Reading provides ways that self-care helps us throughout life:

  • Self-care helps you cope with life changing events, such as an illness, the loss of a loved one, depression, parents adjusting to life with a newborn, etc.
  • Self-care helps us recover after experiencing life changing events, such as the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, divorce, etc.
  • Self-care offers us a protective function, forming a buffer against future stress. If you are able to prepare yourself before a life changing event occurs, then do it. For example, schedule a vacation or some peaceful alone time before the birth of a child, the finalization of an adoption, getting married, starting college, or moving into a new home.
  • Self-care helps us to flourish as individuals and to become the best version of themselves. For example, you may be striving to become a better parent, a better spouse, in search of a new career, or preparing for retirement.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with life’s events, prioritize soothing activities and choices that restore balance to your life.

Renew Inspiration, 11 Ways to Cope with Grief During the Holiday Season

The loneliest walk you’ll ever take is the one down the road of grief. – Author Unknown

Affiliate Disclaimer: This site contains affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you purchase through any of the links (at no additional cost to you).

Thought to Ponder – The “happy holidays” can be the least wonderful time of the year when we are mourning the death of a loved one.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I am truly lost and broken on today. It has been 7 years since my beautiful mother left her earthly body to be in heaven. I realize deep in my heart that she is in a better place where she will no longer be in pain while struggling to breathe due to suffering from severe COPD. I watched her change from an independent, vibrant, and feisty woman to one who struggled to care for herself on a daily basis. Watching her go through this terrible transition honestly broke me down to my core. It hurt me so much because I could not do anything to help her overcome this awful illness that she had to endure. Instead of staying in this deep depression and dark state, I chose to create this safe space to inspire others through my gift of writing.

11 WAYS TO COPE WITH GRIEF DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Missing you comes in waves, tonight I’m drowning. – Unknown Author

The holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger or dread for anyone dealing with an illness, grief or the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, grief can also magnify the stress that is often already felt during the holidays. On the other hand, it’s important to note that it’s alright to have a good time in spite of your grief. Just allow yourself to feel whatever your heart is feeling in the moment and have your trusted support team established.

Here’s 11 effective ways to cope with grief during the holiday season:

  • Be patient with yourself and others – The grief process can be exhausting and overwhelming. Be patient with yourself and extend that same compassion and understanding to others.
  • Offer yourself some grace – Give yourself permission to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. If you feel sad, allow the tears to come; if you feel angry, allow yourself to vent some steam in a safe manner.
  • Be kind to yourself – Be sure to get plenty of rest and nourishment you need; do not take on more than you can handle; if you need to be alone, then honor that. If you desire the affection of others, seek it out.
  • Openly communicate your preferences to others – Be prepared to have an open dialogue with your family and friends to ensure everyone’s grief is acknowledged. This would be a great time to determine if the holiday tradition will continue or if everyone will create a new tradition.
  • Ask for and accept help – It’s okay to tell your loved ones the best way that they can help you during this difficult time. Remember, ask and you shall receive.
  • Set healthy boundaries – Give yourself permission to “do things differently” this year as needed and choose to participate only if you’re ready and feel comfortable.
  • Focus on what you can control – Observe your surroundings and relationships. Then, do what makes you happy.
  • Find a way to honor your memories – Create a special way to memorialize your loved one. For example, light a candle, arrange to have a prayer vigil, release balloons, plant a tree, or create a stone garden.
  • Find support – Sharing your feelings is often the best way to get through them and finding people you can talk to will help. Family and friends can be a great support during times of grief. If they are unavailable, seek professional help from a licensed therapist, a grief counselor or grief support group in your area.
  • Acknowledge your grief reactions – It’s important to acknowledge that this season you may look or feel different. You may encounter the inevitable waves of grief and/or you may be surprised by moments of love, joy or hope.
  • Make a difference in your community – Give to your favorite charity organization or purchase a gift for a needy child. Consider volunteering at a nursing home, hospital, hospice, children’s shelter or soup kitchen. This can help you cope with your grief by contributing to the greater good within your community.

Keep in mind, the best gift you can give anyone you love is that of being true to yourself and living your life to the fullest, even as you adjust to the loss of a loved one during the holidays.

GRIEF AFFIRMATIONS

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom. – Rumi

In order for you to experience the power of grief affirmations, it is important for you to feed your spirit with love and include grief affirmations in your daily routine. For example, I choose to feel good about myself and life’s journey each day. Even when I am feeling sad or depressed, deep inside I aspire to be a giver. A giver of life, a giver of hope, and a giver of strength. This kind of thinking will help you overcome life’s challenges, such as grief, and improve your overall well-being.

Here’s some grief affirmations to help you get started on your journey to healing:

  • In my sadness, I have learned to love and care for myself.
  • I acknowledge that I am never alone in my grief.
  • I treat myself with kindness, respect and compassion.
  • I allow myself to feel my grief and then let go.
  • I take comfort in the memories of my loved one.
  • I am thankful and feel fortunate to have known you.
  • I give myself time and space to grieve, process my feelings, and heal.
  • I appreciate how much love and positivity my loved one brought to this world.
  • I am patience with my healing process.
  • I trust in the healing process and remain confident.
  • I will give myself time to heal and remain optimistic about the future.
  • I embrace my experiences and know acceptance is the first step to finding peace within.

Repeat the grief affirmations 1 to 2 times per day so it will be a constant reminder of what you are aiming for. Shift your focus and attention towards thoughts and feelings that are both positive and constructive. Start using these affirmations along with journal prompts today, and watch the quality of your life improve throughout your journey. Focus on positive changes and you will get positive results. With time, I know I will learn to live and express myself differently, but for now writing is my escape. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

  • How do you navigate in life when obstacles occur?
  • How do you set or reset the direction of your life?

WAYS TO NAVIGATE LIFE’S JOURNEY

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. – Lao Tzu

Today, right in this present moment, I want to take time to reflect on how to navigate life’s journey. I honestly look at where I am today, and I look at how I came to be here. I acknowledge the darkness and the light that shines within. Each day I focus on my vision of positive changes that I need to make in my life so that I may heal and grow in the most beautiful way possible.

Here’s some great ways to help you navigate life’s journey:

  • Every day do something that will lead you closer to God. (Read & Study God’s Word, Pray, Meditate or Listen to Gospel Music)
  • Thrive on happiness, a calm mind, and good health. (Reading, Journaling, Exercising, Walking in Nature, Practice Meditation or Listening to an Inspirational Podcast)
  • Have faith, be courageous, and dream big. (Keep Believing, Trusting, and Hoping)
  • Strive for greatness and embrace change along the way. (Be Your Own Inspiration, Be Flexible, and Open Minded)
  • Don’t procrastinate. Think positive and plan ahead. (Observe Everything Around You, Stay Focused, and Create a Vision for Your Life)
  • Love to no end, be grateful, choose joy and be kind. (Spread Love to Others, Nurture Your Grateful Heart, and Throw Kindness Around Like Confetti)
  • Be strong enough to let go and wise enough to wait for what you deserve. (Show Strength, Courage, and Wisdom)

Now, this will not be an easy task, but it is a necessary one for you to grow into your better self. However, I do realize this journey has no rules, no right or wrong answers. I accept my journey for what it is, and I acknowledge that only I can do my healing work. Don’t be afraid to make this process personal.

Thought to Ponder – Those who think there is a time limit when grieving, have never lost a piece of their heart.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! In case you were wondering, I took a mental health break to gather my thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Today, my mother would have been 80 years old, but she passed away in December 2015. This has been a stressful time for me, to say the least. However, I want you to know that I appreciate you and all of the support you give to my writing and blogging platform.

5 STAGES OF GRIEF & LOSS – On Death and Dying written by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Loss and heartache do not define you. They are part of your story. – Unknown Author

Even though there are 5 stages of grief and loss, people who are grieving do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order or experience all of them. The stages of grief and mourning are universal in nature and are experienced by people from all walks of life, across many cultures. Mourning occurs in our lives in response to an individual’s own terminal illness, the loss of a close relationship, or to the death of a valued being, human or animal. While mourning, we spend different lengths of time working through each step and express each stage with different levels of intensity. Here’s the 5 stages of grief and loss as defined by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross:

  • Denial & Isolation – The first reaction is to deny and isolate yourself from the reality of the situation. Most people block out the painful words and hide from the facts. Some people will believe that nothing is of any value any more, not even life itself. For most people, this stage of grief and loss is a temporary response that carries us through the first wave of pain.
  • Anger – As denial and isolation leaves us, reality and its pain re-emerge. Now, the intense emotion people feel turns into anger. The anger may be toward objects, complete strangers, friends or family. Even though deep down inside the person knows this feeling of anger is wrong, they may even be directing it toward dying or deceased loved ones as well.
  • Bargaining – In the next stage, there are feelings of helplessness and vulnerability as a way to regain control through a series of “if only” statements, such as “If only we had sought medical attention sooner” or “If only we got a second opinion from another doctor.” Unfortunately, this is an attempt to bargain with God or our higher power in order to postpone our pain. Guilt often accompanies bargaining as well. The person believes there was something they could have done differently to have helped save their loved ones’ life.
  • Depression – In the next stage, the person may start to be overwhelmed with sadness or regret which turns into worry. This phase may be eased by simple reassurance from others around them. Another phase of depression is when the person is more private and tries to bid a farewell to their loved one in silence. In this case, a hug or a kind gesture will comfort them.
  • Acceptance – Reaching this stage of grieving is a gift not afforded to everyone. Death may be sudden and unexpected, or we may never see beyond our anger or denial. Unfortunately, this phase is marked by withdrawal and calm.

Please keep in mind that everyone grieves differently. There is no right or wrong way. Some people will wear their emotions on their face and be outwardly emotional. Other people will experience their grief more internally and may not cry at all. Remember, do not judge how a person choose to experience grief, as each person will experience it differently.

WAYS TO NURTURE YOUR MIND, BODY & SPIRIT WHILE COPING WITH GRIEF

You must learn to master a new way to think before you can master a new way to be. – Marianne Williamson

Sometimes I wish time would stand still and I don’t have to relive the pain that comes during this time of the year. While everyone else is excited for the holidays, I dread it with everything within me. The holidays are just not the same without my mother physically being here. No amount of journaling or therapy sessions will save you from the emotional turmoil that you experience and continue to feel throughout the grieving process.

Nevertheless, I’ve learned that it’s important to nurture your mind, body and spirit while coping with grief. Here’s a few different ways to help you get started along this journey:

  • Read and study God’s Word.
  • Seek God’s face each day through prayer and guided meditation.
  • Pray a specific prayer for positive change in and around your life.
  • Practice mindfulness and stay in the present.
  • Set personal goals and a plan to achieve them.
  • Fuel your body with healthy food options.
  • Exercise daily and/or try new yoga poses.
  • Change your mental focus and environment.
  • Setup a daily routine using a To-Do List.
  • Focus on gratitude and find what you are grateful for each day.
  • Write in your journal to get your thoughts on to paper and out of your head.
  • Make time for self-reflection. Go for a walk, read, listen to music, meditate or color.

However, if you feel your mental stability is getting worse throughout the grieving process, seek professional help in the form of therapy from a licensed therapist or social worker, medication to treat depression or anxiety, or support groups to help share your feelings with like-minded individuals.

Renew Inspiration, Affirmation

AFFIRMATIONS TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE LIFE

Affirmations can be used to change your current mindset, boost your self-confidence, mood, and self-esteem. Through the power of repetition, you’re able to reconstruct your thought patterns, beliefs, and ideals in your subconscious mind. I will allow change to take place in my life on today. I plan to water my roots, so my soul can blossom. Now repeat after me:

  • In my sadness, I love myself.
  • It’s okay to take time to grieve.
  • I am patient with my healing process.
  • I allow myself to grieve then move on.
  • I feel my angels holding me today as I grieve.
  • I will embrace change in my life.
  • I will step out on faith throughout my journey.
  • I plan to endure and overcome heartache, pain, suffering, sadness and loneliness.
  • I am finding strength in myself as I grieve.
  • I focus on my blessings, goals and memories.
  • I will commit to improving my personal well-being.
  • I am gentle with myself as I heal.
  • I release my resistance to this situation.
  • I graciously accept help when its offered.
  • The universe lifts me, supports me and guides me.

Unfortunately, many of us struggle to overcome many obstacles in life, such as grief, and don’t understand that the root cause is often times hidden within. Whether you sometimes feel stressed out, anxious, sad or depressed, there’s one important fact that you need to remember. You need to learn that your mind, body and spirit must become ONE in order for you to be at your best. Only then, will you begin to navigate life while coping with grief.

Today’s Special Thought – Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! It has been a while since I’ve written an inspirational blog post for you. Today, I want to express the reasons why I choose writing to escape while standing still. Sometimes I write because I am happy, and sometimes I write when I am sad. However, the main reason why I have a passion for writing is to escape. When I write, I like to escape from life as I know it each day. I like to escape the pain and misery of losing my parents some years ago. Losing your parents leaves a hole in your heart that can never be filled. I like to escape the stress and frustration of parenting adopted children with disabilities and behavior problems. I like to escape the racism of this wicked world for not only having black skin, but also for being a woman. I like to escape from mental illness both depression and anxiety. I like to escape from those sleepless nights when I just listen to my thoughts go on and on. If you allow it to, writing will help you express your feelings and help you cope with challenges that you face throughout your life.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself throughout your journey:

  • Have you taken time to renew your inspiration lately?
  • Are you inspired to become better than you were yesterday?
  • What drives you to push forward when obstacles arise in your life?
  • Who inspires you to reach for your dreams and goals throughout your life?

10 STEPS FOR WRITING TO ESCAPE WHILE STANDING STILL

The fact that I’m still standing on my own two feet, in a world that has tried its best to knock me down over and over again, proves only one truth; I am unbreakable. – Stephanie Bennett-Henry

As you’re thinking about the previous questions, I have another one for you to think about. Have you ever felt like you keep moving and moving throughout life, but you are actually standing still? But when you really think about your internal happiness, health and spiritual well-being, you have to be honest with yourself. Your life is really not changing in a positive way. There is no personal growth. You’re scared to be spontaneous and have fun. You never want to leave your comfort zone. There is very little sparkle within your circle of friends.

Now, if this sounds familiar have no fear. Just keep reading and I promise you will receive an inspirational word that will not only help you overcome this season in your life, but you will be able to make a mental connection with your body and spirit as well.

Here’s 10 steps for writing to escape while standing still:

  • Step 1. Make sure to be realistic while putting your thoughts into perspective honoring your personal beliefs.
  • Step 2. Don’t be afraid to prioritize things that matter most to you in your life right now.
  • Step 3. Remove all negativity, both people and things.
  • Step 4. Don’t be afraid to say NO to others and think positive thoughts throughout your day.
  • Step 5. Start using a calendar or planner to organize your appointments and errands.
  • Step 6. Create a separate To-Do List daily to stay organized and stress free.
  • Step 7. Treat your body well and with respect.
  • Step 8. Exercise daily and eat a well-balanced diet to include plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Step 9. Set realistic goals, create a plan to reach your goals and track your progress.
  • Step 10. Spend time in prayer, meditation and reading God’s Word to receive the proper guidance in your life.

As you can see, writing to escape is real and takes little effort on your part. If you don’t currently write in a journal today, take a moment and think about how journaling could help you cope with the daily challenges of life. Believe it or not, sometimes I just pick up my pen and just start writing words, not sentences. Before I even realize it, I am writing paragraphs. Writing to escape can help you clear your mind and offer you an opportunity to break free from internal bondage. Writing to escape can help you lose yourself on paper and forget about time. Most of all, writing to escape can bring about a peace and comfort that is more powerful than the stress in your life right now. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get our journals and write to escape while standing still!

POEM – STILL STANDING – Written by Latisha Porter

This poem was written based on Psalm 46:10 – Be still and know that I am God.

Despite what my life may look like from your perspective, I am still standing.

I have endured heartache and pain, but yet I am still standing.

I have been broken time and time again, but yet I am still standing.

I have known hardship and I have lost myself time and time again, but yet I am still standing.

I have experienced hurt like no other from a defiant child that I chose to adopt, but yet I am still standing.

I have suffered the loss of my parents which put a huge hole in my heart, but yet I am still standing.

I have struggled through the grieving process, anxiety and depression, but yet I am still standing.

I am standing on God’s Word and His principles which gives me inner strength to move forward in life and my faith which gives me these inspiring words to encourage you as well.

Remember my friend, God will make a way for you and me, we need only to be patient and be still.

BENEFITS OF JOURNALING THROUGH GRIEF

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom. – Rumi

Journaling is a proven coping tool for exploring grief and other complicated emotions. I don’t know about you, but journaling is my safe place, my time to just write how I feel and scream on paper, and no one will ever know. A journal provides a safe environment for you to express your heart felt thoughts. Every person’s grief journal will be different based on the persons expectations, goals, experiences, and preferences.

There are benefits of journaling through grief, such as:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety – Expressive writing can lower stress and anxiety levels during any situation.
  • Improve your memory – Regular journal writing can improve your short-term memory.
  • Stay organized – Keeping a journal such as a weight loss diary or grief journal lets you maintain an organized record of your progress.
  • Strengthen your self-discipline – Journaling helps you to keep a regular writing schedule until it becomes a habit.
  • Prioritize problems and fears – Journaling helps you to see your triggers more clearly so you can prioritize and solve your problems and fears.
  • Allow yourself to self-reflect – Don’t over think your written entries, just write honestly, and make time for self-reflection.
  • Clarify your thoughts and feelings – Jot down your thoughts and feelings with no editing and you will contact your internal being.
  • Be creative – Add photos and positive quotes to enhance your written entries.

As you can see, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends, improvement, and growth over time. Make sure to reflect on these thoughts often throughout your journey.

Grief affirmations may offer you hope when you feel there is none left. Grief affirmations can help shift your mindset in a positive direction. Take a moment each day to recite the following grief affirmations with confidence. Then, you’ll watch your life change right before your eyes.

  • No matter what you say, I know my grief matters.
  • I am strong because of what I have been through.
  • I heal with curiosity, presence, and hope.
  • Grief gives me wings with which I spread love.
  • I am always healing, and never alone.
  • My life is a celebration of their life.
  • Grief is a call for me to wake up and live, and love, even more.

Designate a time in the morning and at night when you can recite affirmations aloud. By saying them aloud, you hear the powerful words, and it can help you internalize them as true. The key to seeing a positive change in life is to say the affirmations with conviction and make it personal.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! So, how’s 2022 treating you so far? There’s a lot going on in my life right now, some good things mixed with some bad. Despite all of this, I am still committed to writing inspirational blog posts that will help you work through some of your challenging life problems. One topic that keeps stirring in my spirit is the act of forgiveness.

Let’s begin our discussion by defining forgiveness. Forgiveness means that you accept the behavior, you accept what has happened, and you are willing to move past it, and move on with your life without worrying about past events that cannot be changed. Often times this process is easier said than done.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH FORGIVENESS

Forgive people in your life, even those who are not sorry for their actions. Holding on to anger only hurts you, not them. – Unknown Author

When you’re dealing with forgiveness, it’s important for you to:

  • Recognize how you truly feel in the inside concerning the person involved or the situation.
  • Learn to accept your feelings and where you are right now in this very moment.
  • Make a plan to take action so you can move on from this hurtful place.

Forgiveness is an extremely hard process to work through. Most of the time people struggle with identifying the various emotions that their feeling, such as anger, guilt, shame, etc.

Here’s some other reasons why people struggle with the act of forgiveness. People are:

  • Scared that forgiveness may justify the pain and hurt that was caused.
  • Not ready to grieve the experience so they can accept and let go.
  • Worried that by forgiving the person involved we make ourselves more vulnerable to being hurt again.
  • Scared to face and process their emotions in regard to what happened.
  • Refusing to forgive so they can maintain a false sense of control over the experience or person.

The struggles people may experience related to forgiveness are real. Remember, you don’t have to go through this process alone. Contact your doctor, join a local support group or find a licensed therapist in your area.

IMPROVE YOUR LIFE THROUGH FORGIVENESS

True forgiveness is when you can say ‘Thank you for that experience’. – Oprah Winfrey

Although forgiveness seems to be difficult for most people to do, when it’s done consistently it can improve your life. However, before you attempt the act of forgiveness, take a moment to reflect over the situation and consider what it is you’re trying to get out of this process. The concept of forgiveness doesn’t mean that you condone what happened or that the person involved is blameless. It’s making the conscious choice to release yourself from the burden, pain, and stress of holding on to resentment.

Grab your journal. Write down the following questions and your answers.

  • What do you want to receive from the forgiveness experience?
  • Why do you feel the need to forgive the person or situation?
  • Who are you really doing this for?
  • Will you be able to handle the result even if it’s not in your favor?

Now, let’s look at some ways to improve your life through forgiveness.

  • Be prepared to take back your power over the situation. Don’t allow anyone or anything to control your happiness. You have the power to overcome and reach your destiny.
  • Be honest with yourself and feel your pain. Give yourself permission to acknowledge and honor the pain that’s real in your life. Then, make a plan to release it.
  • Name the feelings and emotions you’re feeling. Whether you hurt yourself or have been hurt by someone else, allow yourself to name the feelings and emotions. Some examples may include guilt, grief, shame, regret, sadness, anxiety, panic, fear, confusion, numbness, etc.
  • Have patience because forgiveness is a practice. Show yourself patience and grace as you navigate through this experience. Nothing changes overnight. It takes time and a commitment to practice forgiveness.
  • Set healthy boundaries. It’s important to nurture yourself throughout this process. Set healthy boundaries and only allow people to be a part of your life or space that respect you on every level. This is not a compromise.

Always remember, taking action can help you to facilitate healing and make you feel more empowered over the situation.

FORGIVENESS AFFIRMATIONS

Forgive yourself, you are not perfect. Show yourself grace, you are still learning. Show yourself patience, you are on a journey. – Shannon Yvette Tanner

Forgiveness is a process. If you’re feeling resentment. Let it go. If you’re feeling anger. Let it go. Just like you would show someone else patience, compassion, and grace, make sure to do the same thing for yourself.

Now, repeat after me:

I will take small steps towards making peace with my past. Every day is an opportunity to do it better, an opportunity to become a better version of myself.

  • Forgiveness is a gift I give myself.
  • I am worthy of forgiveness.
  • I accept that I am human, and I make mistakes.
  • I forgive myself for the hurt I’ve caused.
  • I accept my shortcomings and forgive myself.
  • I forgive myself for not knowing what I know now.
  • I have the power to forgive everyone who cause me pain and heartache.
  • I let go of unforgiveness, grudges, and malice.
  • I am proud of who I am – strong, powerful, limitless, and courageous.
  • I am ready to get out of my comfort zone and explore the opportunity of forgiveness.

As you practice working with the pain that’s there, you grow key strengths of self-compassion, courage, and empathy that inevitably make you stronger in every way. Now, breathe in and say I acknowledge the pain, hurt, and heartache. Breathe out and say I am forgiving and releasing this burden from mind, heart, and soul. Forgiveness allows me to be happy today, tomorrow, and every day of my life.
