Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I sure hope you and your family are in good health. My family is healthy and safe, but we’re still trying to wrap our heads around the schools being closed for 3 weeks starting tomorrow. This brings me to this week’s discussion.

At any time, we have to brace ourselves for various life’s challenges, such as the coronavirus outbreak, massive school closings, national emergency being put in place, etc. Sometimes we’re ready to face the challenges head on and other times we are caught off guard which leads to stress and anxiety. Often times we are in panic mode or find ourselves just falling to our knees crying out to God. Today, I want to encourage you to strive for excellence throughout your journey especially during these difficult times.

WAYS TO STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE

Excellence is not a skill, it’s an attitude. – Ralph Marston

To begin with, let’s define excellence. According to the Webster Dictionary, excellence (noun) is defined as the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. Now, do not confuse striving for excellence with striving for perfection (being free from all flaws or defects). It’s important to note that they are not one and the same. Also, keep in mind that your journey will be different from my journey or someone else’s, but in the end, we are still striving to push harder than yesterday so we can have a better tomorrow.

Here’s some ways to strive for excellence throughout life:

• Find time to pray and meditate often
Practice gratitude – keep a list and be sincere
• Schedule time to exercise and get it done – no excuses are allowed
• Keep a success journal and reflect on your written words often
• Identify your values and stick to them
• Learn something new every day – online courses, reading, watching informative videos, listening to podcasts

HOW TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence. – Vince Lombardi

Despite how things may be going in your life right now, it’s important to learn how to overcome challenges that may occur in your life from time to time. Let’s face it, life happens to the best of us whether we’re ready or not. In some cases, these challenges may be life changing, such as a death of a loved one, a terrible accident or a medical diagnosis. As you navigate throughout life, be a reflection of what you’d like to receive. Don’t over complicate the process. What you give out throughout your journey, will always return back to you. Make sure to give love, truth and respect every day.

Here’s some suggestions to help you overcome challenges:

• Embrace self-awareness
• Use time to your advantage, don’t procrastinate
• Commit to focused discipline
• Engage your own creativity
• Think BIG, be proactive and set goals
• Re-evaluate your daily tasks
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family, friends or co-workers

EXCELLENCE AFFIRMATIONS

Remember, everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. If you want a different result, make a different choice. Now, repeat the excellence affirmations noted below:

BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! For the last couple of weeks, I have been practicing meditation each day thanks to my wonderful friend Ray at therayjourney.com#TheRayChallenge – Small steps, BIG changes. I have to admit, practicing meditation daily has given me a new look on life.

Today, let’s spread the word about how to be mindful in every day living can help people who suffer from anxiety and depression. So, what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a type of meditation that involves using the senses to pay attention to what’s happening around you and inside you, in the here and now.

Here’s some benefits of mindfulness meditation:

• Get better sleep.

• Lower stress levels.

• Banish temporary negative feelings.

• Improve attention to details.

• Manage chronic pain.

• Reduce anxiety and help prevent depression relapse.

• Make progress toward your weight-loss goals.


LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Mindfulness is being present without judgment in every moment. – Unknown Author

In addition, to be mindful is a way of being with yourself and perceiving the world around you that can help you live your life more peacefully and with greater balance. Well, as I researched the mindfulness concept, I kept coming across the words “LIVE IN THE MOMENT”. I do realize that if you suffer from anxiety or depression, it is quite difficult to just live in the moment from day to day.

Here’s some ways to help you live in the moment:

• Take small steps throughout the process or transition.

• Remember, slow and steady wins the race.

• Try to embrace the freshness of each day.

• Analyze beauty of now in this very moment.

• Do everything with pure joy and happiness.

• Accept your weak points or imperfections in life, then work on them one at a time.

• Strive to free yourself from all distracting thoughts by journaling your true feelings.

TO BE MINDFUL IS NOT

You must learn to master a new way to think before you can master a new way to be. – Marianne Williamson

Now, it is important to really understand what it truly means to be mindful and what mindful is not. To be mindful is living in your present moment rather than in your anxious thoughts and feelings. Also, to be mindful allows you to explore, invite, and be compassionate with anxiety and difficult emotions, which in turn reduces their power over us.

Here are some examples of what to be mindful is not:

A quick-fix trick – It’s important to keep practicing mindfulness over time.

Religious – It’s not part of a religion and it does not involve beliefs or practices that conflict with any religion.

Something separate from you – The capacity to be mindful comes from within.

Time-Limited – The more you practice mindfulness, the better it works.

Something you have to drop everything for – Mindfulness is a mindset and way of life that fits in with where you are and what you’re doing.

A magic wand or cure-all – It’s an effective tool that you can use to choose your focus, reduce anxiety, and still face problems but live a quality life.

Just for people who are already relaxed – Mindfulness is a powerful way of taking charge of your anxiety and helping you become relaxed and full of inner peace.

Always easy – Mindfulness is a skill that must be developed over time, so don’t give up.

WAYS TO BE MINDFUL THROUGHOUT LIFE

Every day we have many opportunities to practice mindfulness. Have you ever wondered what it means to live in the present? Well, here’s some ways to be mindful throughout life:

Observe your breathing throughout the day. You momentarily free yourself from your thoughts, worries and fears. The quality of our breath tells us a lot about our state of being. When the breath is slow and steady, we are calm and peaceful. When the breath is constricted, we are tense.

When possible, eat silently and slowly. Eat nourishing food and taste every bite. Enjoy the smell of your food and how it looks on your plate. Think about the texture of the food. Recognize your non-hunger triggers to break compulsive overeating.

Notice your outside environment – sunlight, rain, the wind, trees, sights and sounds. What is your state of mind and your thoughts as you run your daily errands? Are you in the present moment or thinking about what you will be doing next?

Walk mindfully by paying attention to the movement of your body and your surroundings. Notice as your feet connect with and leave the ground. Feel your muscles moving and supporting you.

Listen wholeheartedly. Next time you’re in a conversation, make it your goal to fully listen to what the other person is saying to you, without getting lost in your thoughts. Trust that you will know the right thing to say next when it’s your turn to speak.

Get lost in the flow of doing things you love. We all have certain activities we love doing. They connect us with our inner spirit and bring us fully alive. Whether it is cooking, dancing, singing, gardening, journaling, writing, painting, swimming or sewing, schedule time to do it and enjoy it.

Meditate daily. There’s no getting around it, meditation has huge benefits and increases your levels of energy, happiness, inspiration and inner peace. Remember, even 10 minutes per day can have a positive impact on your life.

• Write about one thing that you look forward to every day.

• Write about something that you forgive yourself for.

• Write about at least 3 things that help you feel better when things are difficult.

Be mindful as you live each day, use the power of visualization to reach for your dreams and aspirations. On the flip side, end your day on a positive note by writing down what you are thankful for and taking time for self-reflection. Strive each day to be the best you can be. Be present in the moment, minimize stress levels, and appreciate the beauty life offers.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Before I get into today’s topic, I want to discuss what’s going on in my life. Now, that I am back working full-time during the week, it’s important that I create a new writing and blogging schedule for 2020. After thinking about this in great detail, I decided to share inspirational posts with you twice per week based on a normal work/family week (no workshops, long therapy sessions, school activities, etc.) My goal is to encourage you based on topics related to improving your MIND, BODY and SPIRIT.

INTRODUCTION – HOPE

There’s so much darkness in the world today! For example, our televisions are filled with negative news stories about racism, murders, kidnappings, corrupt politics, violence in our schools, etc. With that in mind, let’s talk about hope to help improve our way of thinking. Hope is another one of those words that can be defined on a personal level and may change from situation to situation; or person to person.

Here’s some questions to think about:

• How do you relate to the concept of hope?

• What does hope mean to you?

• Do you hope for anything great on today or in the near future?

When I think of hope, I think of beauty and positive vibes. Hope is like a beautiful flower that thrives on sunlight and water. In a spiritual sense, hope relies on your daily commitment to God’s Word, meditation, and prayer.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, here’s the definitions of hope and hopeful:

• Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen; a feeling of trust. (noun)

• Hopeful is a feeling or inspiring optimism about a future event. (adjective)

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF HOPE

Never lose hope. Just when you think it’s over, God sends you a miracle. – Unknown Author

To begin with, hope is a portion or part of faith. Often times hope is defined in the spiritual sense when God has promised that something is going to happen in our lives and you put your trust in that promise. You find confidence deep down within that something will come to pass because God promised it will come to pass. Remember, hope comes from the promises of God rooted in the work of Christ.

Here’s some steps to help you build a solid foundation of hope that will carry you through the storms of life:

Step 1 – Submit yourself to God. God is the source of our hope. Come to God in humility and He will restore you.

Step 2 – Strengthen your faith. Allow God’s previously fulfilled promises from the Holy Bible to renew your hope.

Step 3 – Trust God’s timing. Remember, sometimes God answers prayers quickly and at other times God allows us to wait.

Step 4 – Thank God today. Every day set time aside to thank God, read God’s Word, pray, and meditate.

WAYS TO RESTORE YOUR HOPE

Did you know that having hope will give you courage in the midst of a storm? Hope is seeing light in spite of being surrounded by darkness. Hope is the only thing stronger than fear. Hope is the ability to hear the melody of the future. Despite what you may be experiencing in your life right now, never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day.

Here’s some ways to restore your hope:

• Be kind to yourself and others.

• Listen to another person’s story.

• Treat each day like a precious gift.

• Look for meaning in the most challenging moments.

• Reconnect with nature.

• Focus on your spirit and shift your expectations.

• Listen to music and channel your energy into productive change.

• Show gratitude and compassion.

• Think about the essential goodness of humanity and volunteer.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! As we count down to the Christmas holiday and the end of the year, I wanted to give you an inspirational piece for you to reflect on. Now, this is a message that you will have to open your heart and be willing to feel the words throughout your soul. Meditate on what the message really means to you. MY TESTIMONY

Depression and grief may rise up within me from time to time, but I meditate on positive thoughts to overcome these negative feelings. Even though this time of the year is truly difficult for me, I’ve learned that no one can prepare you for the emptiness inside after losing a loved one. No words can comfort your heart after it is broken in many pieces. Often times, I look up at my mother’s picture and think about all of the positive memories that are carefully stored away in my mind and in my heart. Sometimes I shed tears. Other times I just pick up a pen and start writing.

Now, this is my testimony. What is your story or experience? It is important to allow yourself to feel and to express honestly. I survived throughout my journey because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me. I had to reflect on scriptures that are hidden in my heart in order to rise up above my problems, situations, depression, sadness, hurt, etc.

KEEP SHINING

Moreover, I plan to keep shining bright every day. How about you? Now, it’s important to note that the ways I keep shining may be different than yours on any given day, but the end result should be the same, we’re shining! Our lives should be an example and reflect positive vibes through the eyes of others. As we travel along this journey called life, we will experience some ups and downs. However, the way we respond to life’s challenges is the key to overcoming the obstacles that occur in our lives.

Here’s some positive ways to keep shining in life:

• Read God’s Word, pray and meditate.

• Smile and believe in yourself.

• Believe in the awesome person you’re becoming.

• Show kindness everywhere you go. Especially, to unkind people.

• Forgive people who don’t deserve it. Then, let it go.

• Move out of your comfort zone throughout your journey so you can grow.

• Allow yourself time to heal from life’s challenging moments.

• Be gentle and patient with yourself. Practice self-care routines.

• Love unconditionally. Find time for self-reflection and to write in your journal.

Furthermore, every situation in life is meant to be temporary. When life is going as planned, make sure to enjoy every moment. And when life is not going as planned, know that it will not last forever and better days are sure to follow.

• Become more aware of what’s really worth your energy.

• If you want to know where your heart is, look where your mind goes when it wanders.

As I get older, I realize that decisions become easier when your will to please God outweighs your will to please the world. I know that is a lot to accept at times, but it is truly a choice that we make each day. Know that your words, thoughts, and actions speak into your very existence throughout your journey. You don’t owe others nothing in life, but you owe everything to yourself. Examine your priorities and make the necessary adjustments in order to make time for personal growth. Remember, your actions will always reflect who you are so the closer you get to being who you are meant to be the brighter you shine!

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I can really feel fall in the air these days. How about you? The mornings and nights in Michigan are in the low 40s. The colorful leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. On the home front my husband is still healing from his foot surgery so many days I am working, driving my sons around to school/appointments, going grocery shopping, running other necessary errands, and caring for my husband. Unfortunately, there’s very little time for me and this is not good for my mental health.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

As I was researching over the weekend, I came across some information that I wanted to share with you. World Mental Health Day is observed on Thursday, October 10th this year. This is a day set aside for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma.

World Mental Health Day was first celebrated on October 10, 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries. Since then, many supporters come to celebrate this annual awareness program on October 10th to bring attention to mental illness. Remember, treatment and support are available for those who need it, but the door to conversation must be opened and welcomed.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Mental wellness tips are important to know when you are striving to improve your mental health. Especially when you suffer from anxiety, depression, stress, or any other mental health disorder, it is critical to have some mental wellness tips available for you to manage your condition. Here’s some tips to improve your mental health:

• Take care of your body. Exercising is a great mental health tip because exercise helps burn anxious energy and prevents muscle tension.

• Maintain a healthy diet. Eating processed foods and foods that are high in fats can negatively impact mental health.

• Take mental breaks to rest during the day. Mental breaks will help you to move forward without feeling exhausted.

• Get plenty of sleep every night. Sleeping well prevents fatigue which can have a negative impact on mental wellness.

• Take time to pray and meditate. Meditation helps you relax the body and the mind.

• Practice deep breathing exercises. Deep breathing helps the body and mind stay healthy by providing oxygen to the brain and muscles.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Today is a great day for women everywhere. Did you know that women all over the world is celebrating National Women’s Health and Fitness Day today? Well, I have to be honest, I did not know until I was doing some research online. National Women’s Health and Fitness Day is the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for women of all ages. This wonderful day has been observed the last Wednesday of September since 2002.

What better way to celebrate and honor women that to write an inspirational blog post, right? I not only wanted to bring awareness to this special day, but also provide some ways that you can participate today, tomorrow, and forever!

Walking for fitness is such a great way to get in your exercise. Depending on the weather, you can walk outdoors around your neighborhood or you can visit your local park to walk through the nature trail. Well, in Michigan the weather can be somewhat tricky, especially in the winter, so I choose to do my walk workouts in the comfort of my own home. One good thing that I have found, is when you choose to walk for fitness, you are in control of how fast you move or when it is important for you to slow down and rest. Remember, a consistent, moderate pace offers good cardiovascular benefits, but interval training delivers those gains sooner and in a shorter workout. Also, there is no wrong or right way to do a walk workout, just get up and start walking for fitness!

Now, that summer is coming to an end, what comes to mind as you think about moving from season to season? How can you connect your mind, body, and spirit during this time? For me, I always associate seasons with personal change. Changes in the weather, changes in your attitude, changes in your home, changes in relationships, etc. In some ways moving from season to season offers you an opportunity to reflect on meditation (mind), personal changes (body), and restoring your soul (spirit).

• Meditation increases our capacity for empathy and compassion?

Meditation, when practiced regularly, can bring about a true personal transformation from the inside out. As you allow yourself to experience your inner peace and security, you will naturally begin to discover aspects of yourself that were previously hidden due to stress. Keep in mind, when practicing meditation, your body undergoes a structural change, which demonstrates the profound impact of simply sitting down, perfectly still, with your eyes closed, breathing deeply nice and slow. Meditation relaxes the entire brain and places your entire body in a calm way of living. Simply put, meditation is spending quality time with your soul and not allowing anything or anybody to distract you.

As you can see, meditation is your time to relax, unwind, and practice your deep breathing techniques. Even though you are free to meditate anywhere, it would be nice to create your very own personal space in or around your home dedicated to meditation.

• Tip 1: Choose a location with nature in mind. For example, lush green trees, soothing blue water, beautiful flowery garden, next to a window, on a patio, porch, empty room decorated with nature colors and pictures, etc.

• Tip 2: Keep the space clean. If the environment around you is clean, your mind can also be relaxed during meditation. Less clutter is better.

• Tip 3: Light it up as you like. Allow sunlight to come through your windows or if it is evening you may want a specific type of lamp to help set the relaxing mood.

• Tip 4: Smell the relaxation. You may choose from a variety of fragrances as per your choice. Whether it is aromatic incense sticks or essence oils, the choice is yours.

• Tip 5: Think comfort. You may choose a soft yoga mat, a low-height mattress, soft cushion or a comfortable chair.

WAYS TO HELP YOU ADJUST TO PERSONAL CHANGE

• Read and study God’s Word. Plant the scriptures in your heart.

• Journaling practice helps to get your thoughts on to paper and out of your head.

• Make time for self-reflection. Go for a walk, spend time journaling, reading, drawing, meditating or coloring. Do what makes your soul happy and keeps your mind relaxed.

• If you feel that your mental stability is getting worse, seek Professional help in the form of therapy from a licensed therapist or social worker, medication to treat depression or anxiety, or support groups to help share your feelings with like-minded individuals.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Well, it is officially summer and our schedules are all over the place. Now, that school is out, most families have to juggle working outside of the home, taking children to summer programs, and planning fun activities to do as a family. I am sure all of the parents can relate, right?

In addition, this is also a time where people can become mentally drained due to stress and anxiety. Tis the season to be happy one moment and sad in another. When your emotions seem to be all over the place, it is important to take a mental break from life as you know it so you can put your mental state in check. During this time, remember, you are not alone during this process. Make sure to change your focus and have your support network established.

RELAXING THE MIND

Believe it or not, relaxing the mind is very important when you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Take time to observe how you really feel and don’t be afraid to challenge your thoughts.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Have you ever heard of the phrase, “Keep Life Simple”? Well, I strive to keep life simple every day. Remember, to keep a simple life may not be easy. Some of the simplest things to do are often the most difficult. Sometimes we need to just STOP everything and take a break. Let loose, slow down, and unwind. Turn inward and rethink about your life. Ask yourself hard questions and connect to your inner voice. In order to live better, simple lives, we need to create a safe space to breathe, and to think.

WAYS TO KEEP LIFE SIMPLE

Be kind, be happy, be peaceful, live well.

Be Present – Live in the moment. Be aware of everything that you’re doing, feeling, and telling yourself. Learn to fight through it. Learn to stop making excuses every time your body feels discomfort. Learn to do this with everything that you do.

Don’t Expect Too Much – There may be times where something may not go your way. It seems like there’s something missing. Take time to expect the worst, the best, and at the same time, nothing at all.

Be Kind – It takes less energy to be kind to those people who are around you.

Redefine Everything In Your Life – It’s important to define what matters most in your life. What makes you happy? What does success really mean to you? The American Dream philosophy may not work for you (college, good paying job, nice car, 6-pack abs, etc.), but it may work for someone else.

Do You – Stop focusing and worrying about how other people live their life. Life will become a whole lot better when you learn to shut out the outside noise, and focus on the most important noise inside your own mind.

Cultivate Morning Rituals – Practicing a morning ritual can help you create a positive mood and increase energy for the day. It’s a great opportunity to take care of your body and mind, and start the day with a healthy breakfast, some stretching or light exercise, a warm bubble bath, prayer and meditation, or planning your day by writing down the three most important things you need to do today.

Meditate – Practicing daily meditation will help to increase focus, better memory, and emotional resilience. Also, meditation has a positive effect in treating anxiety, depression, obsessive thinking, and hostility.

Exercise Regularly – Exercise helps is essential for a happy and productive life. Our bodies were made to move throughout the day. Get up and go for a walk. Stretch while at your desk.

Eat Better and Healthier – The foods/drinks that you put into your body not only affects your health, but also your attitude and mood. Drink more water, increase whole grains, increase vegetables, decrease sugar and junk food.

Sleep More – Sleep is needed for restoring energy and emotional well-being. Sleep is essential for learning and memory, metabolism and weight, and to improve your mood.

Keep a Journal – Some people like using paper journals and others like using apps. How much and how often to write is up to you. Write about random creative ideas that come to you, things you are grateful for, your goals and aspirations, internal stuff that you need to process better, foods you eat, and other habits you are building or breaking.

Practice Smiling – Smiling is healthy and also improves your well-being. Believe it or not, smiling makes you live longer, look more attractive, and be more productive at work.

Write Down Goals – Take a moment and write down your three most important long-term goals in life. Are they translated into short-term goals and present actions for you? This process will highly increase the likelihood of you creating the simple life you want.

Nurturing Close Relationships – Nurturing meaningful and close relationships will bring you much more happiness and satisfaction in life.

Spend Time in Nature – Spending time in nature, even a 20-minute walk in the park, can improve your happiness and overall well-being. It also helps to increase your exercise and concentration.

Believe it or not, you can improve your productivity while keeping life simple.

My prayer for you today is that you will make your life a priority and choose to keep life simple. Focus on the things and people that help you grow as a person. Be productive throughout your day. Include time to learn, read, write, gain experience from others, share your thoughts and feelings with others, etc. Remember, your success is found in your daily routine so make a plan and stick to your plan. If it doesn’t seem to be working for you, re-evaluate your plan and make the necessary changes.
