BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

The real meditation practice is how we live our lives from moment to moment to moment. – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! For the last couple of weeks, I have been practicing meditation each day thanks to my wonderful friend Ray at therayjourney.com#TheRayChallenge – Small steps, BIG changes. I have to admit, practicing meditation daily has given me a new look on life.

Today, let’s spread the word about how to be mindful in every day living can help people who suffer from anxiety and depression. So, what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a type of meditation that involves using the senses to pay attention to what’s happening around you and inside you, in the here and now.

Here’s some benefits of mindfulness meditation:

• Get better sleep.

• Lower stress levels.

• Banish temporary negative feelings.

• Improve attention to details.

• Manage chronic pain.

• Reduce anxiety and help prevent depression relapse.

• Make progress toward your weight-loss goals.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Mindfulness is being present without judgment in every moment. – Unknown Author

In addition, to be mindful is a way of being with yourself and perceiving the world around you that can help you live your life more peacefully and with greater balance. Well, as I researched the mindfulness concept, I kept coming across the words “LIVE IN THE MOMENT”. I do realize that if you suffer from anxiety or depression, it is quite difficult to just live in the moment from day to day.

Here’s some ways to help you live in the moment:

• Take small steps throughout the process or transition.

• Remember, slow and steady wins the race.

• Try to embrace the freshness of each day.

• Analyze beauty of now in this very moment.

• Do everything with pure joy and happiness.

• Accept your weak points or imperfections in life, then work on them one at a time.

• Strive to free yourself from all distracting thoughts by journaling your true feelings.

TO BE MINDFUL IS NOT

You must learn to master a new way to think before you can master a new way to be. – Marianne Williamson

Now, it is important to really understand what it truly means to be mindful and what mindful is not. To be mindful is living in your present moment rather than in your anxious thoughts and feelings. Also, to be mindful allows you to explore, invite, and be compassionate with anxiety and difficult emotions, which in turn reduces their power over us.

Here are some examples of what to be mindful is not:

A quick-fix trick – It’s important to keep practicing mindfulness over time.

Religious – It’s not part of a religion and it does not involve beliefs or practices that conflict with any religion.

Something separate from you – The capacity to be mindful comes from within.

Time-Limited – The more you practice mindfulness, the better it works.

Something you have to drop everything for – Mindfulness is a mindset and way of life that fits in with where you are and what you’re doing.

A magic wand or cure-all – It’s an effective tool that you can use to choose your focus, reduce anxiety, and still face problems but live a quality life.

Just for people who are already relaxed – Mindfulness is a powerful way of taking charge of your anxiety and helping you become relaxed and full of inner peace.

Always easy – Mindfulness is a skill that must be developed over time, so don’t give up.

WAYS TO BE MINDFUL THROUGHOUT LIFE

No amount of guilt can change the past and no amount of anxiety can change the future. – Unknown Author

Every day we have many opportunities to practice mindfulness. Have you ever wondered what it means to live in the present? Well, here’s some ways to be mindful throughout life:

Observe your breathing throughout the day. You momentarily free yourself from your thoughts, worries and fears. The quality of our breath tells us a lot about our state of being. When the breath is slow and steady, we are calm and peaceful. When the breath is constricted, we are tense.

When possible, eat silently and slowly. Eat nourishing food and taste every bite. Enjoy the smell of your food and how it looks on your plate. Think about the texture of the food. Recognize your non-hunger triggers to break compulsive overeating.

Notice your outside environment – sunlight, rain, the wind, trees, sights and sounds. What is your state of mind and your thoughts as you run your daily errands? Are you in the present moment or thinking about what you will be doing next?

Walk mindfully by paying attention to the movement of your body and your surroundings. Notice as your feet connect with and leave the ground. Feel your muscles moving and supporting you.

Listen wholeheartedly. Next time you’re in a conversation, make it your goal to fully listen to what the other person is saying to you, without getting lost in your thoughts. Trust that you will know the right thing to say next when it’s your turn to speak.

Get lost in the flow of doing things you love. We all have certain activities we love doing. They connect us with our inner spirit and bring us fully alive. Whether it is cooking, dancing, singing, gardening, journaling, writing, painting, swimming or sewing, schedule time to do it and enjoy it.

Meditate daily. There’s no getting around it, meditation has huge benefits and increases your levels of energy, happiness, inspiration and inner peace. Remember, even 10 minutes per day can have a positive impact on your life.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Knowing when to walk away is wisdom. Being able to is courage. Walking away, with your head high is dignity. Now, think about that for a moment. What does courage mean to you right now in this very moment? Your honest response would be a great journal entry if you want to reflect on it later.

According to the Webster Dictionary, courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens one and the strength to withstand in the face of danger, fear, difficulty, pain or grief. So, how does one take courage to the next level? There is no right or wrong answer here. Everyone handles situations in their lives differently.

WAYS TO HELP BOOST YOUR COURAGE

Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you. – Unknown Author

However, many situations occur in life that call upon us to do something we find scary, upsetting, uncomfortable, anxiety provoking, or distressing. We have to learn how to move out of our comfort zone throughout this journey called life, so we can develop, grow, and expand both our mental and physical capacity. Are you up for the challenge? I sure hope you are.

Here’s some ways to help boost your courage:

• Don’t overthink it. Once you’ve decided to do anything in life that requires courage, don’t wait, proceed to act.

• Commit yourself ahead of time. Schedule an appointment or tell others when and where you plan to attend the activity. Committing yourself ahead of time or stating intentions to your support system will make you be accountable and you will follow through with the activity.

• Do the activity with a friend. Recruit a friend or family member to participate in the activity. Interacting with another person is a true way of managing fear and anxiety.

• Think of how good you’ll feel afterwards. Give some serious thought to how great you’ll feel about yourself after you take this leap of faith. You will feel more confident and increase your determination.

• Think of the doors that would open for you. If you struggle with courage and anxiety issues, you may need to seek help from a mental health professional or support group. Take some time to consider all the ways your life could be different if you were able to tackle your issue(s) successfully and use the motivation this process gives you to take the necessary step.

Here’s three life rules to live by:

1. If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it.

3. If you don’t step forward, you will always be in the same place.

PRAYER FOR STRENGTH AND COURAGE

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face. – Eleanor Roosevelt

Heavenly Father, I want to hear from you on today. Speak to me right now in this very moment. Teach me how to hear you in my heart. Please show me what you want me to do to live out my calling. Give me the strength and courage. In Jesus Mighty Name, AMEN.

BONUS – After you pray to God, wait and listen. Then, journal what you hear and have the courage to share with a family member, a friend, or a mentor you trust. Remember, the best way to grow in your ability to hear God is to practice and let others help you.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Time has a wonderful way of showing us what really matters. Honestly, it feels like forever since I’ve written a blog post and it was only last Sunday. I want to apologize for not publishing at least two blog posts last week. Between my new work schedule, family life obligations, and my boy’s mid-term schedule, I did not have extra time to write. Therefore, this hectic work week helped me realize my limitations with working full-time so my new goal will be to publish at least one inspiring blog post per week.

GOAL #1 – WRITING & BLOGGING

The purpose of the first draft is not to get it right, but to get it written. – John Dufresne

Well, like I’ve stated before, 2020 has started off busy for me, but in a positive way. For starters, on the writing front, I have decided to create the following writing and blogging goals:

• Write & publish my first Renew Inspiration book – 1st draft complete [2020 – 2021]
• Continue and improve my Renew Inspiration blog [On-Going]
• Strive to keep journaling, reading, writing, and meditating [On-Going]
• Network with other talented authors and bloggers [On-Going]
• Support other bloggers by reading their material & commenting [On-Going]

Overall, I have really enjoyed this blogging experience while connecting with you and have met so many awesome bloggers along the way. I felt it necessary to document my writing goals again this year in a blog post to keep me grounded on what’s important in my life, right now, in this very moment. In addition, I want to be accountable to my overall writing career and make plans to reach all of these goals. Why now you ask? Because I feel time is precious and I want to enjoy my passion which is writing.

GOAL #2 – WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life. – Unknown Author

Next, I plan to create a healthy work-life balance after accepting a full-time Secretary position in December 2019. This has been a great opportunity for me overall, but I need more time to adjust to my “new normal”. I really enjoy my new job, but there’s so much information to learn, new systems to analyze, and family obligations to juggle.

I realize my extra time is very limited and most days I find myself re-thinking my daily tasks when I need to be at work earlier for workshop prep which includes early drop offs and pickups for my boys. Oh, I cannot forget to mention the same thing happens if there are no school, early dismissal days or the boys have a therapy session to attend.

As you can see, I’ve been struggling to balance my full-time work, family obligations and writing projects which are all dear to my heart. My husband is very supportive throughout this process and have stepped up to help, but it is still very stressful and difficult for me to find a healthy work-life balance while adjusting to my new work schedule.

Special Thought – And sometimes against all odds, against all logic, we still hope.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Before I get into today’s topic, I want to discuss what’s going on in my life. Now, that I am back working full-time during the week, it’s important that I create a new writing and blogging schedule for 2020. After thinking about this in great detail, I decided to share inspirational posts with you twice per week based on a normal work/family week (no workshops, long therapy sessions, school activities, etc.) My goal is to encourage you based on topics related to improving your MIND, BODY and SPIRIT.

INTRODUCTION – HOPE

When the world says, “give up.” Hope whispers “try it one more time.” – Unknown Author

There’s so much darkness in the world today! For example, our televisions are filled with negative news stories about racism, murders, kidnappings, corrupt politics, violence in our schools, etc. With that in mind, let’s talk about hope to help improve our way of thinking. Hope is another one of those words that can be defined on a personal level and may change from situation to situation; or person to person.

Here’s some questions to think about:

• How do you relate to the concept of hope?

• What does hope mean to you?

• Do you hope for anything great on today or in the near future?

When I think of hope, I think of beauty and positive vibes. Hope is like a beautiful flower that thrives on sunlight and water. In a spiritual sense, hope relies on your daily commitment to God’s Word, meditation, and prayer.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF HOPE

Never lose hope. Just when you think it’s over, God sends you a miracle. – Unknown Author

To begin with, hope is a portion or part of faith. Often times hope is defined in the spiritual sense when God has promised that something is going to happen in our lives and you put your trust in that promise. You find confidence deep down within that something will come to pass because God promised it will come to pass. Remember, hope comes from the promises of God rooted in the work of Christ.

Here’s some steps to help you build a solid foundation of hope that will carry you through the storms of life:

Step 1 – Submit yourself to God. God is the source of our hope. Come to God in humility and He will restore you.

Step 2 – Strengthen your faith. Allow God’s previously fulfilled promises from the Holy Bible to renew your hope.

Step 3 – Trust God’s timing. Remember, sometimes God answers prayers quickly and at other times God allows us to wait.

Step 4 – Thank God today. Every day set time aside to thank God, read God’s Word, pray, and meditate.

WAYS TO RESTORE YOUR HOPE

I am not an optimist, but a great believer of hope. – Nelson Mandela

Did you know that having hope will give you courage in the midst of a storm? Hope is seeing light in spite of being surrounded by darkness. Hope is the only thing stronger than fear. Hope is the ability to hear the melody of the future. Despite what you may be experiencing in your life right now, never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day.

Here’s some ways to restore your hope:

• Be kind to yourself and others.

• Listen to another person’s story.

• Treat each day like a precious gift.

• Look for meaning in the most challenging moments.

On the other hand, have you ever just sat down in a quiet place and allowed yourself to think without interruption? This process is called self-reflection. It’s really important to spend quality time in self-reflection mode whether you have all your stuff together (you think) or you’re still trying to find your way (most of us).

DEFINE SELF-REFLECTION

Self-reflection is a humbling process. It’s essential to find out why you think, say, and do certain things…then better yourself. – Unknown Author

Before moving forward, I think it is important to understand what self-reflection is before you can commit to practicing it on a regular basis. Self-reflection can be defined as meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions, and motives. To take it a step further, you must be willing to learn more about your fundamental nature, purpose, and essence of life.

Now, take a moment and look in a mirror. What do you see? You see a reflection of who you are on the outside. For example, you notice your physical facial features, the color of your skin, your hair color and style, etc. However, self-reflection is not only your outward appearance, but it is a way of assessing yourself deep within – mind, body, and spirit.

WAYS TO SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER

May peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through. – Unknown Author

To begin with, holiday cheer can be defined as the comfort or encouragement one feels during the holiday season. Holiday cheer puts you in a good mood and put a happy tune in your heart. If we allow ourselves to be honest and feel the positive sensations inside, then we all could agree that life is always bursting with holiday cheer.

Here’s some ways to spread holiday cheer:

• Be kind toward yourself. Remember, you cannot give what you don’t have.

• Smile. Don’t wait to be happy. Think of something good in your life, smile and see what happens.

• Transform your life by being optimistic and positive. Be helpful and give compliments to others.

• Surprise the people you love with a special gift or flowers just because.

• Say something good about someone or something. Be genuine and spread positive vibes and thoughts.

• Send a card, special note or letter to family, friends, co-workers or neighbors.

• Being authentic and courteous to others by saying words, such as “good morning” or “have a wonderful day”.

• Volunteer for a good cause where you can help others less fortunate than you are. For example, visit a nursing home, hospital, children’s group home or a homeless shelter.

WAYS TO RELIEVE STRESS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year. – Unknown Author

On the other hand, while living your best life, it is important to find ways to relieve stress during the holiday season. Don’t wait for perfect circumstances to experience a stress-free atmosphere.

Here’s some ways to relieve stress during the holiday season:

• Take calm-down breaks to meditate, read a good book or just do nothing.

• Stay active and get moving by exercising, doing yoga, walking or trying a new class at the gym.

• Be generous and kind by volunteering at the local shelter/food bank or donating money to your favorite charity.

• Smile and laugh often by watching holiday movies, playing boardgames or enjoying quality time with family and friends.

• Plan a YOU day by getting a massage, manicure, pedicure or getting a new hair style.

As I stated before, feeling holiday cheer grows from the inside, then you are allowed to spread it to others along your journey. Learning to live in the present moment is part of the path you take towards holiday cheer. Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent stress that can descend during the holidays. It can be quite a rewarding experience to brighten up someone’s day by extending an act of kindness or just simply smiling at someone as you pass by. However, it is essential for you to bring holiday cheer to yourself which leads to a happy and stress-free life.

Hold the vision. Trust the process. – Unknown Author

Special Thought – Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Today, I want to focus on creating your 2020 vision. It’s important to set aside time to think about your future and to set realistic goals that will help you be happy as well as successful. Remember to focus on your mind, body, and spirit throughout this entire process.

What better time to create your 2020 vision than now? Here’s what I plan to discuss:

• Define what a vision is.
• Discuss why it is important to create a vision.
• Identify ways to help you refine & support your vision.
• Provide tips that will help you create a vision board.

AMAZON RESOURCE # 1

DEFINE VISION

Where there is no vision, there is no hope. – George Washington Carver

Let’s start this discussion with the definition of vision. According to the Oxford Dictionary, vision can be defined as the faculty or state of being able to see or the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom (noun).

When I think of vision, words like sight, dream, imagination, creativity, future, goals and reflection all come to mind. Take a moment and create your list. Since we are different individuals, our lists may be different, but our vision should remain the same – to strive for success and accomplishments; to feel happy and full of worth.

Here’s some other ways to think about vision as you create your own:

• A vision begins as an idea in your imagination.

• The idea turns into the intention and will to achieve that idea.

• The vision is the articulation of the desired future that you strive to achieve.

CREATING A VISION

A vision is the art of seeing things invisible. – Jonathan Swift

Now, that you have decided to create your 2020 vision, it is important to discuss the need for creating a vision. Why is this process so important? Well, choices we make in life create consequences, whether good or bad. Unfortunately, without clear vision or direction, we fail to acquire the quality of life results we expect.

Keep these important facts in mind:

• A well-defined vision leads to satisfaction and a sense of meaning in life.

• Partial visions lead to an imbalance life and no purpose.

• Visions should come from internal needs, not on the reflections of others.

• The lack of a clear vision leads to settling for whatever happens.

Simply put, a shared vision empowers and impacts quality of life if you allow it.

AMAZON RESOURCE #3

WAYS TO REFINE & SUPPORT YOUR VISION

It is better to aim high and miss then to never aim at all. – Unknown Author

Refining and clarifying the idea along with intentions to achieve it are what turn into the vision. Remember, creating a vision is a process of nurturing and cultivating ideas and imagination.

Here’s some ways to refine and support your own vision:

• Differentiate between the future that would become real and the future of your vision.

• Share the vision and help others recognize their importance in the realization of the vision.

• Lock onto the vision, make it a way of life, a part of every decision you make.

• Become aware of and utilize the natural forces that move toward achievement of your vision.

• Avoid, reduce or neutralize those things that lead you away from your vision.

• Anticipate resistance in the accomplishment of your vision.

In other words, don’t be afraid to envision the implications of successfully achieving your vision. Step out on faith, make a plan, and work toward achieving it.

TIPS TO HELP CREATE A VISION BOARD

Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe. – Oprah Winfrey

Have you ever created a vision board for yourself or your family? If not, what better time to think about creating one. A vision board is a visualization tool which refers to a board of any sort used to build a collage of words and pictures that represent your goals, dreams and/or vision. By placing visual representations of your goals into one space, you can easily visualize them frequently.

Follow these important tips to create an awesome and inspiring vision board:

• Put the year at the top of your vision board so you are clear on where you’re going for the year ahead.

• Create a list of goals you’d like to achieve in the next year. In order to visualize your goals, first you need to know what they are. What do you want your ideal life to look like?

• Collect a bundle of old magazines with beautiful pictures. Check with your local library or ask your family and friends.

• Find pictures that represent your goals and inspire you. Focus on how the images make you feel.

• Make a collage out of your photos. Once you have collected enough photos, it’s time to make your vision board.

• Add motivational “affirmation words” that represent how you want to feel. For example, I want to feel joyful, powerful, fearless, loved, strong, healthy, loving and financially free.

• Take a few moments to contemplate your vision board every day. Place your vision board somewhere you can see it every day. Then, make time to look at it and meditate on it at least once per day.

It’s a good idea to create a new vision board each year. As you continue to grow, evolve and expand, your dreams will too. Believe it is already yours. Be grateful for the good that is already present in your life. Acknowledge any goals you have already achieved and acknowledge the presence of God in your life. So, what are you waiting for? Begin creating your 2020 vision today!

JOURNAL PROMPTS

The best way to predict the future is to create it. – Unknown Author

Journaling is a powerful way to process events in your life, build self-awareness, get more clarity, and keep yourself on track. Journaling also allows for past reflection, future insight, and present surrender. Keep in mind that this is a journey and everyone takes their own path. Ready, set, write!

• Define vision in your own words. What kinds of words come to mind? Right them down, then reflect on them.

• Do you honestly believe in your 2020 vision? Why or why not?

• Are you afraid of creating a vision for your life? If so, what are some of the things stopping you? Write them down and reflect on them often.

• After you complete this vision process, do you plan on supporting it?

• Have you ever created a vision board? If so, how did it help you fulfill your dreams and goals?

Creating and staying true to a vision makes things happen in life. If you relax your mind and allow your dreams to be your wings, then your vision will come to pass. Have a dream so clear in life, that in your mind you have already achieved it. Don’t be afraid to DREAM BIG and know that you are going to accomplish great things in life!

Moreover, journaling and self-reflection goes hand in hand. Self-reflection can be defined as meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions and motives. Self-reflection is a humbling process. It’s essential to find out why you think, say, and do certain things, then better yourself throughout the process.
