Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Despite the unrest, hatred, loneliness, and fear that is often times experienced during difficult times, it is important for me to continue writing positive and uplifting messages to inspire you. As I sit here today thinking about how great God is in our lives, I cannot help but wonder why we will not just be still, get out of God’s way and allow Him to restore our souls. We read God’s Word, pray, meditate, and attend church services week after week but why do we forget to let God order our daily steps and thoughts? We have to remember that we cannot restore ourselves, but we must be restored by God, our Maker and Creator. What better way to be totally restored than to spend quality time journaling through isolation?

BENEFITS OF JOURNALING

You will never change your life, until you change something you do daily. – Unknown Author

Journaling is my safe place, my time to just write how I feel and scream on paper and no one will ever know. Let’s take a moment to define journal. A journal is a personal reflection of who you are, it’s a repository for all the things that interest and inspire you. A journal provides a safe environment to experiment with your writing style and technique. Simply put, when you write in a journal it becomes your personal journey of creative and heart felt thoughts.

Here’s some benefits of journaling through isolation:

• Reduce stress – Expressive writing has been shown to lower stress levels.

• Improve your memory – Regular journal writing can improve your short-term memory.

• Stay organized – Keeping a journal such as a weight loss diary lets you maintain an organized record of your progress.

• Strengthen your self-discipline – Journaling helps you to keep a regular writing schedule until it becomes a habit.

• Allow yourself to self-reflect – Don’t over think your written entries, just write honestly and make time for self-reflection.

• Be creative – Add photos and positive quotes to enhance your written entries.

• Clarify your thoughts and feelings – Jot down your thoughts and feelings with no editing and you will get in touch with your internal being.

As you can see, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends, improvement, and growth over time. Make sure to reflect on these thoughts often throughout your journey.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! This has been a long and sad week! Not only are we still in the midst of a pandemic that continues to take lives each and every day, but now we also have race driven protests all over the United States of America speaking out against police brutality. It’s a shame that in 2020, African Americans are still asking to be free from bondage and wanting others to know that #BLACK LIVES MATTER. More importantly, #ALL LIVES MATTER. As a wife, a mother, sister, and aunt of African American males, I pray every day that my husband, sons, brother, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends, and neighbors make it home alive. This is my reality that I am forced to live with and it is not fair. Sometimes we have to fully surrender our desires and trust that the universe (not man) has our back. I believe there has to be a Higher Power that will help us overcome this vicious cycle. Keep in mind, though these times may be difficult, we must find ways to stay motivated and continue to demand EQUALITY for ALL!

BENEFITS OF JOURNALING

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any. – Alice Walker

In addition, journaling is another positive way to help release what’s held captive inside you. Journaling allows you to say things that you would probably never say out loud. Keep in mind people cannot define journaling the same way because it is a personal written journey. You are the author who writes the beginning, the middle, and the ending. Often times journaling….

• Helps us make space for our hearts.

• Turns memories into reality.

• Gives us time to process our personal experiences.

• Helps to create an energetic and visual level of comfort.

• Offers a way to fully express ourselves.

• Has no boundaries and no limits set to what we can write.

• Has no set format, just write, write, write.

• Allows us to be creative souls with no set criteria or instructions.

• Provides an opportunity to write until our mind, body, and spirit are one.

If you are struggling in this area along your journey, don’t fret, just begin to write down your thoughts (positive or negative) in your journal or in a notebook. It’s important to be honest and to focus on what matters most to you in your life. In reality, the enemy always fight the hardest when he knows God has something great in store for you. Before you know it, you will begin to take charge of your life again and know in your heart that I AM POWERFUL NOT POWERLESS!

During our life long journey, it is important for us to listen to what people say and what people don’t say. If you really take a moment to open your spiritual ear, you realize that unspoken words often times speak the loudest.

SPEAK POSITIVE WORDS

Speak positive words into your very being – mind, body & spirit. – Unknown Author

Depression and grief may rise up within me, but I meditate on positive thoughts continuously to overcome this feeling. Quite frankly, sometimes this is not enough. Today is truly a difficult day for me because I have to feel the sadness and experience the overwhelming grief from my mother’s death in 2015. It’s like it was just yesterday. No one can prepare you for the emptiness inside after losing your mother or any loved one for that matter. No words can comfort your heart after it is broken in so many pieces. I look up at my mother’s and father’s picture above my desk every day and think about all of the positive memories that are carefully stored away in my mind and in my heart. Sometimes I shed tears and sometimes I just pick up a pen and just start writing.

Now, this is my testimony or life experience however you want to define it. What is your story or experience? It is important to allow yourself to feel and to express honestly. I survived throughout my journey because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me. I reflect on scriptures that are hidden in my heart in order to rise up above my problems, situations, depression, sadness, hurt, etc.

• Don’t mistake God’s patience for His absence. His timing is perfect, and His presence is constant. He’s always with you! Deuteronomy 31:6

• Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Here’s to another beautiful and blessed day! Michigan is still under the Stay-At-Home order due to the coronavirus (covid 19) outbreak. I don’t know about you, but I am really scared. Our government leaders do not care about the needs and well-being of the people. The government is only focused on money and getting the economy back up and running. Rushing to open up businesses and become normal again. It doesn’t matter about how many of us are still dying alone from this awful virus.

I’ve taken this time to overcome my personal spiritual imbalance. Instead of focusing on the fear of the unknown, I am choosing to pray, read God’s Word, and write in my journal. This process has helped me shift my mindset so I can improve my spiritual well-being.

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

Thy word is thy lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105)

How often do you read and study God’s Word? Do you just read your favorite Bible verse, pray, then move on with your day? In order to overcome spiritual imbalance in our lives, it is important to schedule quality time to not only read God’s Word, but also to write down our personal thoughts about the scriptures read and to determine how we can apply the scriptures to our own lives.

Here’s some ways to begin your spiritual journey:

• Set a time to better engage in God’s Word and stick to your plan.
• Gather your materials, such as Bible, Notebook/Journal, Pens, Highlighters, Sticky Notes, Bible Concordance, Dictionary, etc.
• Designate a quiet space with no distractions.
• Play soft music in the background to set a relaxing mood.
• Make sure your study area is free of clutter and well lit.
• Pray and meditate while studying God’s Word to open your mind and heart.
• Speak to God often to strengthen your relationship.
• Ask God to direct your Bible study time.

SPIRITUAL BALANCE

Life is all about balance. You don’t always need to be getting stuff done. Sometimes it’s perfectly okay, and absolutely necessary, to shut down, kick back, and do nothing. – Lori Deschene

To strive for spiritual balance within your life, it is important to face each day with a positive attitude. Dig deep inside to strive for new opportunities that surround us every day. Focus on right now and not what ifs. Believe it or not, even as I type these words, it seems easier said than done. I realize it will not be easy for some, but to move to a better place in life, we sometimes need to place ourselves in uncomfortable situations and/or conversations. Involve yourself with like-minded individuals who build you up and not tear you down.

Here’s some ways to help you find spiritual balance within your life:

• Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal.
• Read and be grounded in God’s Word.
• Meditate and be prayerful often.
• Practice yoga and stretch routines.
• Read inspirational and spiritual books.
• Set some attainable goals for yourself.

My mind and body are in perfect balance. I am a harmonious being. – Louise Hay

When thinking about spiritual balance, it is important to prepare your mind, body and spirit for your spiritual journey. From experience, it is difficult to have spiritual balance without first getting the mind ready to receive our spiritual gifts from God. So, in addition to reading and studying God’s Word, it is also important to practice meditation regularly.

Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses his or her mind on a particular object, thought, or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. Remember, practice makes perfect so make sure to plan for meditation every day. It’s important to start with good breathing techniques when doing your meditation. In addition, create a peaceful and safe space where you will not be distracted during your meditation. It is important to let go of any and all frustrations throughout the meditation process. Meditation, when done correctly, offers many benefits throughout your life.

Here’s some helpful benefits of meditation:

• Reduces stress and anxiety.
• Reduces impulsivity, cravings, and addictions.
• Increases resilience in hard times.
• Increases happiness and optimism.
• Helps create loving, harmonious relationships.
• Increases focus, creativity, and life satisfaction.
• Increases memory, compassion, and productivity.
• Produces a deep state of peace and well-being.

LET’S PRAY

Pray. Wait. Trust. – Unknown Author

When life gives you more than you can stand, take a moment to close your eyes, bow your head, and kneel. Open your heart, then open your mouth. Allow true words to flow from your lips. Prayer is the world’s greatest wireless connection. Prayer is more powerful than any level of education, wealth or status. Simply put, prayer changes everything!

Dear God,
Enlighten what’s dark in me.
Mend what’s broken in me.
Bind what’s bruised in me.
Heal what’s sick in me.
And lastly,
Revive whatever peace and love has died in me.
Amen.

Written by Winston Porter

Each day I need to let God’s Word interrupt me, rearrange me and redirect me. My prayer today is that you start taking this time to focus on overcoming spiritual imbalance within your own life. Remember, if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Water your roots, so your soul can blossom. Peace and blessings!

WORRY TRIGGERS

Stop worrying about what can go wrong, and get excited about what can go right. – Unknown Author

Let’s face it, we all have issues that we worry about, right? Sometimes we’re not even aware of why we’re worrying, when we’re doing it or what we tend to worry about the most. We just know that we often feel anxious and we find ourselves stuck in a vicious cycle of worry. One of the ways to break this vicious cycle is to be aware of which things trigger our anxiety.

• Is it when we’re in certain places?

• Particular times of the day?

• When we’re around certain people?

• Is there certain thoughts, emotions or feelings?

FINDING WHAT WORKS FOR YOU

Smile, breathe, and go slowly. – Thich Nhat Hahn

It’s impossible for you to completely eliminate worry from your life, but you can significantly lessen its hold over your life. Part of this process is learning when it might show up (triggers) and coming up with a plan to deal with it when it does (solutions).

• Understand your specific symptoms. What are your thoughts when your worry escalates? In what situations do your symptoms intensify? Lessen?

• Know what works for you. Which strategies are helpful in moments of high worry? Examples could be deep breathing exercises, mindfulness exercises, meditation, journaling or talking with a support person.

• Schedule therapy sessions with a mental health professional. Be open and honest.

• Find a support group in your area or online to help you gain another perspective on your worrying. Don’t be afraid to share your experiences, listen to others and give/receive feedback.

• Visit your local library and check out some books on worry and anxiety.

• Spend some time regularly doing meditation, mindfulness exercises or yoga along with deep breathing exercises.

• Write down your thoughts and feelings in your journal or notebook. Then, reflect on them throughout your journey.

• Find ways to cope with worry and anxiety by purchasing The Ultimate Anxiety Workbook.

WAYS TO INCREASE FAITH

Faith is building on what you know is here so you can reach what you know is there. – Cullen Hightower

While most communities are still sheltered in place, take this very sensitive time to build a true relationship with God so you can increase your faith. Believe it or not, your faith can move mountains and your doubt can create them. You must believe in your heart and mind that you will receive whatever it is that you are praying for throughout your journey. No mountain is too big for our God. I always think of a mountain as any obstacle, problem, or situation that happens in our lives throughout the journey.

Here’s some ways to increase your faith:

• Read and study God’s Word.

• Pray to God throughout your day.

• Listen to positive and uplifting gospel music.

• Read a devotional to strengthen your faith.

• Practice praise and worship ushering in God’s presence.

• Meditate on God’s Word and spend time journaling.

Begin to create a safe space for God to work wonders in your spiritual life by reading God’s Word, praying often, and submitting to God’s healing. God wants your heart, gratitude, and honesty which will bring you to His everlasting peace. Remember, less worry, more faith should be your living roadmap.

TRUST THE TIMING

I am learning to trust the journey even when I do not understand. – Mila Bron

To begin with, I know that you may not have all the answers right now, but the truth is none of us do. In life we all know that there is never a dull moment. Despite all of the unknowns in life, I still strive to trust the timing and want to encourage you to do the same. While it is easy for us to give up or to lose hope, I suggest for us to do the opposite. Dig deep down within to find the courage, the peace, and the strength to trust the timing in ways that will make you come out of this difficult time a better person.

Here’s a few ways to trust the timing within your life:

Be present. Take a deep breath, inhaling and exhaling slowly. Focus on your breath and this will instantly bring you to the present moment. Notice that with every breath, things change within you and all around you.

Give thanks. Acknowledge where you are right now and what it took to get you there. Then, say THANK YOU from the heart for your life and for your family. Feel the gratitude for what has gone well and for the many blessings that are coming your way.

Be open and honest. Remember that life is all about learning and honesty. Be curious to experience a different way of doing or being, with yourself and with others.

Make time for reflection. Sit in silence to just be with yourself and your thoughts. Be honest about how you feel and what you’re thinking. Write in your journal for a few minutes everyday and gradually increase your time each week.

Have unwavering faith in yourself. Know that everything is unfolding as it should and one day, you’ll be able to look back and connect the dots. Recognize and celebrate small wins. Keep a journal to track your accomplishments and lessons learned.

Repeat a daily positive affirmation. Find or create a daily positive affirmation that resonates with you and what you want to embody. I’ve included a few of my favorites in the next section of this blog post.

Thought for today – One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I want to take this opportunity to share an encouraging word with you. Every situation in life is meant to be temporary. When life is going as planned, make sure to enjoy every moment. And when life is not going as planned, know that it will not last forever and better days are sure to follow.

Have you ever tried journaling for encouragement? For those of you who are not familiar with the term journaling, here is the definition:

Journaling can be defined as a record of experiences, ideas, or reflections kept regularly for private use (diary).

When you decide to do some journaling, make sure to start with the date and start with small talk. If you are stuck, just ask yourself a question to get started. For example, “what was the best thing that happened this week”?

Thought for today – When the world says, “give up.” Hope whispers “try it one more time.”

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! During this difficult time in our nation, all we can hold on to is hope. Hoping takes courage from deep within. Hope is another one of those words that can be defined on a personal level and may change from situation to situation; or person to person.

Before we get started, take a moment and think about the following questions:

• How much hope do you have right now?

• Do you consider yourself a courageous person? Why or why not?

• Why do you reflect and spend time journaling?

Now, the flip side of this conversation is how pain can bring about hopelessness in our lives as the enemy relentlessly attempts to destroy us. But God holds His hand out to us every day. The wonderful hope of God’s good plans for our lives, hope that is rooted in God’s amazing love for us. My hope for you today is that you will work on building and strengthening your personal relationship with God for the rest of your life.

Moreover, did you know that having hope will give you courage in the midst of a storm? Despite what you may be experiencing in your life right now, never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day. The importance of hope is immeasurable. Especially during dark times like we are facing now, many of us need to look forward to the future. Hope is what helps us deal with grief we often feel, find positives in our current situation, push us to continue searching for something better, and to have faith that everything will work out.

WAYS TO STAY HOPEFUL

Hope is that beautiful place between the way things were and the way things are yet to be. – Unknown Author

Let’s face it, most of us did not just wake up one day and have a successful career, a beautiful home, respectful children, a healthy fitness routine, etc. You had to first decide what you wanted to work on, then you had to plan, then you had to execute your plan into action. In reality, most people fail many times before they succeed so never stop hoping for positive change to happen in your life.

Here’s some ways to stay hopeful along your journey:

• Set realistic goals and incorporate them into your current lifestyle. You may need to rearrange your work schedule, ask for help around the house from family or friends, etc.

• Begin to visualize yourself after your goals are achieved. Take a moment and ask yourself what life looks like after the goals are reached, then spend a few minutes every day picturing yourself in that very same life.

• Evaluate your progress as you move through the steps you’ve identified as necessary to reach your goals and adjust your efforts as needed.

• Prepare for your journey. Look at what you’ve already achieved, think about your strengths, think about what’s important to you, and where you want to go in life.

• Set out on your journey. Build the knowledge you need to succeed, focus on the basics, set small goals and achieve them.

• Make time for self-reflection to examine one’s own thoughts, feelings, and sensations to gain better insight of one’s life.

Remember, hoping takes courage. Believe in yourself. Be brave and take risks. After all, nothing can substitute your true experience, whether it is positive or negative. So, keep hoping and praying for a positive outcome to happen in your life. Peace and blessings!
