Thought to Ponder – The “happy holidays” can be the least wonderful time of the year when we are mourning the death of a loved one.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I am truly lost and broken on today. It has been 7 years since my beautiful mother left her earthly body to be in heaven. I realize deep in my heart that she is in a better place where she will no longer be in pain while struggling to breathe due to suffering from severe COPD. I watched her change from an independent, vibrant, and feisty woman to one who struggled to care for herself on a daily basis. Watching her go through this terrible transition honestly broke me down to my core. It hurt me so much because I could not do anything to help her overcome this awful illness that she had to endure. Instead of staying in this deep depression and dark state, I chose to create this safe space to inspire others through my gift of writing.

11 WAYS TO COPE WITH GRIEF DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Missing you comes in waves, tonight I’m drowning. – Unknown Author

The holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger or dread for anyone dealing with an illness, grief or the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, grief can also magnify the stress that is often already felt during the holidays. On the other hand, it’s important to note that it’s alright to have a good time in spite of your grief. Just allow yourself to feel whatever your heart is feeling in the moment and have your trusted support team established.

Here’s 11 effective ways to cope with grief during the holiday season:

  • Be patient with yourself and others – The grief process can be exhausting and overwhelming. Be patient with yourself and extend that same compassion and understanding to others.
  • Offer yourself some grace – Give yourself permission to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. If you feel sad, allow the tears to come; if you feel angry, allow yourself to vent some steam in a safe manner.
  • Be kind to yourself – Be sure to get plenty of rest and nourishment you need; do not take on more than you can handle; if you need to be alone, then honor that. If you desire the affection of others, seek it out.
  • Openly communicate your preferences to others – Be prepared to have an open dialogue with your family and friends to ensure everyone’s grief is acknowledged. This would be a great time to determine if the holiday tradition will continue or if everyone will create a new tradition.
  • Ask for and accept help – It’s okay to tell your loved ones the best way that they can help you during this difficult time. Remember, ask and you shall receive.
  • Set healthy boundaries – Give yourself permission to “do things differently” this year as needed and choose to participate only if you’re ready and feel comfortable.
  • Focus on what you can control – Observe your surroundings and relationships. Then, do what makes you happy.
  • Find a way to honor your memories – Create a special way to memorialize your loved one. For example, light a candle, arrange to have a prayer vigil, release balloons, plant a tree, or create a stone garden.
  • Find support – Sharing your feelings is often the best way to get through them and finding people you can talk to will help. Family and friends can be a great support during times of grief. If they are unavailable, seek professional help from a licensed therapist, a grief counselor or grief support group in your area.
  • Acknowledge your grief reactions – It’s important to acknowledge that this season you may look or feel different. You may encounter the inevitable waves of grief and/or you may be surprised by moments of love, joy or hope.
  • Make a difference in your community – Give to your favorite charity organization or purchase a gift for a needy child. Consider volunteering at a nursing home, hospital, hospice, children’s shelter or soup kitchen. This can help you cope with your grief by contributing to the greater good within your community.

Keep in mind, the best gift you can give anyone you love is that of being true to yourself and living your life to the fullest, even as you adjust to the loss of a loved one during the holidays.

GRIEF AFFIRMATIONS

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom. – Rumi

In order for you to experience the power of grief affirmations, it is important for you to feed your spirit with love and include grief affirmations in your daily routine. For example, I choose to feel good about myself and life’s journey each day. Even when I am feeling sad or depressed, deep inside I aspire to be a giver. A giver of life, a giver of hope, and a giver of strength. This kind of thinking will help you overcome life’s challenges, such as grief, and improve your overall well-being.

Here’s some grief affirmations to help you get started on your journey to healing:

  • In my sadness, I have learned to love and care for myself.
  • I acknowledge that I am never alone in my grief.
  • I treat myself with kindness, respect and compassion.
  • I allow myself to feel my grief and then let go.
  • I take comfort in the memories of my loved one.
  • I am thankful and feel fortunate to have known you.
  • I give myself time and space to grieve, process my feelings, and heal.
  • I appreciate how much love and positivity my loved one brought to this world.
  • I am patience with my healing process.
  • I trust in the healing process and remain confident.
  • I will give myself time to heal and remain optimistic about the future.
  • I embrace my experiences and know acceptance is the first step to finding peace within.

Repeat the grief affirmations 1 to 2 times per day so it will be a constant reminder of what you are aiming for. Shift your focus and attention towards thoughts and feelings that are both positive and constructive. Start using these affirmations along with journal prompts today, and watch the quality of your life improve throughout your journey. Focus on positive changes and you will get positive results. With time, I know I will learn to live and express myself differently, but for now writing is my escape. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

WAYS TO SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER

May peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through. – Unknown Author

To begin with, holiday cheer can be defined as the comfort or encouragement one feels during the holiday season. Holiday cheer puts you in a good mood and put a happy tune in your heart. If we allow ourselves to be honest and feel the positive sensations inside, then we all could agree that life is always bursting with holiday cheer.

Here’s some ways to spread holiday cheer:

• Be kind toward yourself. Remember, you cannot give what you don’t have.

• Smile. Don’t wait to be happy. Think of something good in your life, smile and see what happens.

• Transform your life by being optimistic and positive. Be helpful and give compliments to others.

• Surprise the people you love with a special gift or flowers just because.

• Say something good about someone or something. Be genuine and spread positive vibes and thoughts.

• Send a card, special note or letter to family, friends, co-workers or neighbors.

• Being authentic and courteous to others by saying words, such as “good morning” or “have a wonderful day”.

• Volunteer for a good cause where you can help others less fortunate than you are. For example, visit a nursing home, hospital, children’s group home or a homeless shelter.

WAYS TO RELIEVE STRESS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year. – Unknown Author

On the other hand, while living your best life, it is important to find ways to relieve stress during the holiday season. Don’t wait for perfect circumstances to experience a stress-free atmosphere.

Here’s some ways to relieve stress during the holiday season:

• Take calm-down breaks to meditate, read a good book or just do nothing.

• Stay active and get moving by exercising, doing yoga, walking or trying a new class at the gym.

• Be generous and kind by volunteering at the local shelter/food bank or donating money to your favorite charity.

• Smile and laugh often by watching holiday movies, playing boardgames or enjoying quality time with family and friends.

• Plan a YOU day by getting a massage, manicure, pedicure or getting a new hair style.

As I stated before, feeling holiday cheer grows from the inside, then you are allowed to spread it to others along your journey. Learning to live in the present moment is part of the path you take towards holiday cheer. Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent stress that can descend during the holidays. It can be quite a rewarding experience to brighten up someone’s day by extending an act of kindness or just simply smiling at someone as you pass by. However, it is essential for you to bring holiday cheer to yourself which leads to a happy and stress-free life.

I AM THANKFUL

There is always something to be thankful for. – Unknown Author

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I don’t know about you, but I have so much to be thankful for on today. Life is better when you smile from time to time, cry a little, laugh a lot, and are thankful for everything you’ve got.

Here’s just a few things that I am thankful for:

• I am thankful to still be in the land of the living.

• I am thankful for salvation and Jesus dying on the cross.

• I am thankful for my family and friends.

• I am thankful for our lovely home.

• I am thankful for reliable transportation.

• I am thankful for having a good portion of health and strength.

• I am thankful for having food to eat and clean water to drink.

• I am thankful for my Renew Inspiration blog.

• I am thankful for all of the support you give me throughout the year.

There is always something to be thankful for. Would you agree? Yes, even when we are in the midst of a storm in our life, we have to hold our head up and thank God for giving us the strength to overcome the many obstacles that come and go throughout our personal journey called life.

TIME FOR REFLECTION

Be kind. Be thoughtful. Be genuine, but most of all be thankful. – Unknown Author

Now, I am going to ask you to step out of your comfort zone. Go to a quiet place, clear your mind, and make sure you have a pen/pencil and a notebook. Throughout life it’s important to make time for reflection and what better time to start than Thanksgiving Day. Take a deep breath and free your soul before assessing your own spiritual wellness.

Here’s the questions that you need to ask yourself:

• What gives my life meaning and purpose?

• What give me hope?

• How do I get through tough times? Where do I find comfort?

• Am I tolerant of other people’s views about life issues?

• Do I make attempts to expand my awareness of different ethnic, racial and religious groups?

• Do I make time for relaxation in my day?

• Do my values guide my decisions and actions?

My suggestion is to gather all of the questions at one time, but take your time to answer them. Then, it is important for you to be open and honest with yourself as well. There is no right or wrong way to complete this task. Finally, you need to re-visit your questions and answers from time to time.

WAYS TO COPE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow. – Unknown Author

I am thankful for the gift of life and for those I am blessed to share this wonderful life with. I take nothing for granted during the holidays because I realize this can be a difficult and stressful time for most people for many reasons, such as the loss of a loved one, broken relationships, unemployment, depression, anxiety, just to name a few. Unfortunately, this is me in a nutshell. Despite experiencing all of these things in my life at one point or another, I am still thankful for all of it.

Everything that I have gone through has helped mold and shape me into the beautiful and smart woman I am today. Every single struggle and setback I encountered has made me a stronger, wiser and humble person. We have to humble ourselves in life, so we can learn from life lessons. Believe it or not, if I would not have gone through so much pain and heartache in life, my Renew Inspiration blog would not exist today.

Here’s some ways to help you cope during the holiday season:

• Pray and meditate to help clear your mind and uplift your spirit.

• Practice journaling often to express yourself. Remember, written expressions open doors to your soul.

• Read inspirational blogs, books or quotes to help boost self-confidence.

• Plan quiet time alone to gather your thoughts and feelings.

• Be honest with yourself and others. Never hold back how you feel. Open communication is healthy.

• Practice yoga or do stretches to help strengthen your body and help you relax.

• Exercise daily to move your body and boost energy.

• Participate in therapy sessions with a professional therapist for encouragement and support.

I am truly blessed with everything I need. I am working hard toward everything I want. And most of all, I appreciate and thank God for what I have. Thank you for your part in my journey! I appreciate you taking the time to read my Renew Inspiration blog, writing thoughtful and caring comments, and most of all, taking that leap of faith and subscribing to my blog. Take a moment and share my blog so that others may be blessed as well.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Well, I have to admit, I did not do very well with the Blogtober Challenge that I started on October 1. Even with planning and having the right intentions, I just could not blog as much as I wanted to. My husband is still recovering from his foot surgery, I’ve been working during the week, and helping my boys with homework. Despite all of that, I could not end October without writing a Halloween blog post.

It’s that time of year again when the leaves are falling from the trees, the days become shorter, and the temperatures begin to drop. When fall arrives we know Halloween shortly follows. I have to admit, I have never been excited about Halloween, but it was always nice to go trick-or-treating as a family. However, as you get older, trick-or-treating becomes very old and boring.

AMAZON RESOURCE # 1 – Halloween Decorations

Nowadays, Halloween can get very expensive with buying costumes, buying candy/treats, and going to various Halloween parties. Depending on your family size and the ages of your children, you may have to get a little creative when planning to celebrate Halloween.

Here’s some family-friendly ways to celebrate Halloween without buying costumes or going out to trick-or-treat:

• Decorate your house with fall colors, festive leaves, pumpkins, and wreaths.

• Go to a pumpkin patch to select your favorite pumpkin(s).

• Visit a local farm or park to enjoy hay rides, bonfires, corn mazes, and haunted houses.

• Have a pumpkin painting or carving party with a twist. Encourage the participants to be as creative as possible when decorating the pumpkins.

• Make pumpkin bread, popcorn balls, or any Halloween themed snacks as a family. Then, watch your favorite scary classic movies as a family.

• Host an orange and black party. Ask all guests to wear orange and black. Serve a variety of orange and black snacks/drinks.

• Enjoy a big bonfire outside in the backyard and tell scary stories.

• Visit a local cider mill to enjoy warm cider, donuts, live music, and apples.

• Enjoy time as a family doing spooky crafts, playing board games, and eating sweet treats.

• Visit a church that’s hosting Harvest Night which normally provides a safe, but fun environment for the children.

Remember, Halloween is just a bunch of hocus pocus for some and for others it’s a time to have lots of fun. Have a safe and Happy Halloween, in whatever ways you choose to celebrate!

Missing you comes in waves, tonight I’m drowning. – Unknown Author

Special Thought – Happiness is my choice. Decide every morning that you are in a good mood.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I am truly lost and broken on today. It has been 3 years since my beautiful mother left her earthly body to be in heaven. I find myself repeating this quote from time to time:

A million words would not bring her back, I know because I’ve tried. Neither would a million tears, I know because I cried. – Unknown Author

I realize deep in my heart that she is in a better place where she will no longer be in pain while struggling to breathe due to her failing lungs. My mother suffered from severe COPD for about 5 years or so. I watched her change from an independent, vibrant, and feisty woman to one who struggled to care for herself on a daily basis. Watching her go through this terrible transition honestly broke me down to my core. It hurt me so much because I could not do anything to help her overcome this obstacle, this awful illness, that she had to endure. This whole experience left me totally lost and broken even until this day.

If I had to find a happy place throughout this experience, I would have to say that my mother and I grew closer to one another. We had a special bond that could never be broken. Even that last night together, I was able to bathe her and pray for her. That was a special moment that will forever be in my heart. She smiled as I left her room that night. I smiled back as I said, “I love you mom.” Not knowing that was the last time I would see her alive. My positive memories will never replace her presence in my life, seeing her warm smile or hearing her laughter. Honestly, I feel her spirit every day and she visit me in dreams often. Sometimes the dreams seem so real.

Losing our loved ones is hard and painful but losing them during the holidays is even harder. Believe it or not, writing my feelings out in a journal helps me sort out my thoughts. I’m able to release the hurt, loneliness, pain, anger, and heartache all in one place without judgment. With time, I know I will learn to live and express myself differently, but for now writing is my first choice throughout this lost and broken journey.

My mouth says, “I’m okay.” My fingers text, “I’m fine.” My heart says, I’m broken.” – Unknown Author

Something to Think About – Jesus knows the way because He is the way.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Season’s Greetings! Always remember, the greatest gift you can ever own is not found in the shops or under your Christmas tree. It is found in the hearts of your loving family and your true friends. This should be a special time of the year filled with happiness and peace. Finding time to share joy and positive memories with family and friends. Don’t forget about those who are less fortunate than us. Sacrifice your time by serving people in need at your local homeless shelter, foster care agencies, nursing homes or hospitals. Visit some of your neighbors and make sure that your elderly neighbors have healthy meals for the holidays as well.  Also, don’t forget to send monetary donations to your favorite charities. Jesus isn’t just the reason for this season. He’s the reason for every single day of our life. Wishing all my family and friends a beautiful and blessed Holiday Season!

Today be thankful and think how rich you are. Your family is priceless, your time is gold, and your health is wealth. –Zig Ziglar

REASONS WHY JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

The beauty of Christmas is not in the presents but in His presence.

  • We should celebrate Jesus Christ because He is the ultimate gift to the world (Romans 5:15)
  • His love inspires people to be extra kind and giving this time of year that’s why you give special gifts to those you love and cherish (I John 3:16)
  • It’s a time of year where we can all be like little children, just like He taught (Matthew 18:2-5)
  • Christmas lights remind us that He is the Light of the world (John 8:12)
  • We can be of good cheer and full of hope because He came to save us (John 3:16)
  • Everybody loves when a baby is born, but none has changed the world as Jesus has (Matthew 1:21)

Coping with Grief, Mother
Rosalynn K. Russell

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Today’s blog post is dedicated to my late mother, Rosalynn K. Russell. Happy Birthday, Mom! Today, would’ve been her 76th birthday! I miss her presence, her smile, her touch, her laughter. I miss everything about her. She was a small woman in stature but had a big heart and was willing to help anyone in need. November and December are the most difficult months for me while I continue to cope with grief and the loss of my beautiful and loving mother.

The loneliest walk you’ll ever take is the one down the road of grief. – Author Unknown

Unfortunately, the holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger or dread for anyone dealing with an illness, grief or the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, grief can also magnify the stress that is often already a part of the holidays.

Here’s some effective ways to cope with grief during the holidays:

• Offer yourself some grace – Give yourself permission to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. If you feel sad, allow the tears to come; if you feel angry, allow yourself to vent some steam.

• Be kind to yourself – Be sure to get plenty of rest and nourishment you need; do not take on more than you can handle; if you need to be alone, then honor that. If you desire the affection of others, seek it out.

• Ask for and accept help – It’s okay to tell your loved ones the best way that they can help you during this difficult time.

• Find support – Sharing your feelings is often the best way to get through them and finding people you can talk to will help. Family and friends can be a great support during times of grief. If they are unavailable, seek help from a grief support group in your area.

• Make a difference – Give to your favorite charity organization or purchase a gift for a needy child. Consider volunteering at a nursing home, hospital, hospice, children’s shelter or soup kitchen. This can help you cope with your grief by contributing to the greater good within your community.

During the holidays, it’s alright to have a good time in spite of your grief. Just allow yourself to feel whatever your heart is feeling in the moment. The best gift you can give anyone you love is that of being true to yourself and living your life to the fullest, even as you adjust to the loss of a loved one.

Healing unfolds in its own time; it doesn’t look to the clock or calendar for direction. – Jen, aimhappy.com
