Today’s Special Thought – Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! It has been a while since I’ve written an inspirational blog post for you. Today, I want to express the reasons why I choose writing to escape while standing still. Sometimes I write because I am happy, and sometimes I write when I am sad. However, the main reason why I have a passion for writing is to escape. When I write, I like to escape from life as I know it each day. I like to escape the pain and misery of losing my parents some years ago. Losing your parents leaves a hole in your heart that can never be filled. I like to escape the stress and frustration of parenting adopted children with disabilities and behavior problems. I like to escape the racism of this wicked world for not only having black skin, but also for being a woman. I like to escape from mental illness both depression and anxiety. I like to escape from those sleepless nights when I just listen to my thoughts go on and on. If you allow it to, writing will help you express your feelings and help you cope with challenges that you face throughout your life.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself throughout your journey:

  • Have you taken time to renew your inspiration lately?
  • Are you inspired to become better than you were yesterday?
  • What drives you to push forward when obstacles arise in your life?
  • Who inspires you to reach for your dreams and goals throughout your life?

10 STEPS FOR WRITING TO ESCAPE WHILE STANDING STILL

The fact that I’m still standing on my own two feet, in a world that has tried its best to knock me down over and over again, proves only one truth; I am unbreakable. – Stephanie Bennett-Henry

As you’re thinking about the previous questions, I have another one for you to think about. Have you ever felt like you keep moving and moving throughout life, but you are actually standing still? But when you really think about your internal happiness, health and spiritual well-being, you have to be honest with yourself. Your life is really not changing in a positive way. There is no personal growth. You’re scared to be spontaneous and have fun. You never want to leave your comfort zone. There is very little sparkle within your circle of friends.

Now, if this sounds familiar have no fear. Just keep reading and I promise you will receive an inspirational word that will not only help you overcome this season in your life, but you will be able to make a mental connection with your body and spirit as well.

Here’s 10 steps for writing to escape while standing still:

  • Step 1. Make sure to be realistic while putting your thoughts into perspective honoring your personal beliefs.
  • Step 2. Don’t be afraid to prioritize things that matter most to you in your life right now.
  • Step 3. Remove all negativity, both people and things.
  • Step 4. Don’t be afraid to say NO to others and think positive thoughts throughout your day.
  • Step 5. Start using a calendar or planner to organize your appointments and errands.
  • Step 6. Create a separate To-Do List daily to stay organized and stress free.
  • Step 7. Treat your body well and with respect.
  • Step 8. Exercise daily and eat a well-balanced diet to include plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Step 9. Set realistic goals, create a plan to reach your goals and track your progress.
  • Step 10. Spend time in prayer, meditation and reading God’s Word to receive the proper guidance in your life.

As you can see, writing to escape is real and takes little effort on your part. If you don’t currently write in a journal today, take a moment and think about how journaling could help you cope with the daily challenges of life. Believe it or not, sometimes I just pick up my pen and just start writing words, not sentences. Before I even realize it, I am writing paragraphs. Writing to escape can help you clear your mind and offer you an opportunity to break free from internal bondage. Writing to escape can help you lose yourself on paper and forget about time. Most of all, writing to escape can bring about a peace and comfort that is more powerful than the stress in your life right now. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get our journals and write to escape while standing still!

POEM – STILL STANDING – Written by Latisha Porter

This poem was written based on Psalm 46:10 – Be still and know that I am God.

Despite what my life may look like from your perspective, I am still standing.

I have endured heartache and pain, but yet I am still standing.

I have been broken time and time again, but yet I am still standing.

I have known hardship and I have lost myself time and time again, but yet I am still standing.

I have experienced hurt like no other from a defiant child that I chose to adopt, but yet I am still standing.

I have suffered the loss of my parents which put a huge hole in my heart, but yet I am still standing.

I have struggled through the grieving process, anxiety and depression, but yet I am still standing.

I am standing on God’s Word and His principles which gives me inner strength to move forward in life and my faith which gives me these inspiring words to encourage you as well.

Remember my friend, God will make a way for you and me, we need only to be patient and be still.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Today, let’s learn how to journal to transform your mindset. After all, your life is only as good as your mindset, right? I want to erase all my negative thoughts and feelings from my inner being. I want to replace all negativity with a new pattern of positive thoughts and feelings; a new wave of emotional balance and well-being; a new connection to my life as I know it, think it and feel it. There will be a new belief system inscribed within me. This powerful mental process will not only help you to transform your mindset, but you will also learn how to:

  • Develop a positive attitude.
  • Spend quality time focusing on self-reflection.
  • Commit to writing in your journal consistently.

DEFINITIONS

The best time to begin keeping a journal is whenever you decide to. – Hannah Hinchman

A journal is a reflection of who you are, it’s a repository for all of the things that interest and inspire you. In addition, a journal provides a safe environment to experiment with your writing style and technique. Simply put, when you write in a journal it becomes your personal journey of creative and heart felt thoughts.

Journal (noun) – A daily record of news and events of a personal nature; a diary.

Transform (verb) – Make a thorough or dramatic change in the form or appearance.

Mindset (noun) – The established set of attitudes held by someone.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE

A positive attitude will lead to positive outcomes. – Unknown Author

First, it is important for you to face each day with a positive attitude. Dig deep inside to strive for new opportunities that surround you every day. Focus on right now and not what ifs.

Here’s some great ways to develop a positive attitude right now in this very moment:

  • Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal
  • Set some attainable goals for yourself
  • Read and be grounded in God’s Word
  • Meditate and be prayerful
  • Read inspirational and spiritual books often
  • Post positive quotes where you can read them daily
  • Recite positive affirmations throughout your day
  • Practice yoga and stretch routines regularly
  • Seek professional help from a licensed therapist

I realize it will not be easy for some, but to move to a better place in life, we sometimes need to place ourselves in uncomfortable situations and/or conversations. Involve yourself with like-minded individuals who build you up and not tear you down.

SELF-REFLECTION

Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away. – Barbara DeAngeles

Next, self-reflection can be defined as meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions and motives. Self-reflection is a humbling process. It’s essential to find out why you think, say, and do certain things, then better yourself throughout the process. In addition, self-reflection:

  • Allows you to notice negative patterns in your life. Consider alternate approaches to your situation(s) and begin to move away from the stressors altogether.
  • Keeps you focused on the bigger picture. Identify a clear vision of where you want to see yourself in the future. Write it down and remind yourself of what you hope to accomplish.
  • Prevents you from worrying about things out of your control. Instead, direct your energy toward things you can absolutely improve within your life.
  • Helps you face your fears. Recognize and admit your fears to yourself and eventually learn how to handle them.
  • Allows you to clearly define happiness on your own terms. When are you most happy? Who do you most enjoy spending time with? What accomplishments are you most proud of and why? By recognizing the positive life events, you can apply your knowledge to future goals and endeavors.

Keep in mind, self-reflection is an incredible gift so please embrace it every day. Meditation can make our journey through life more peaceful if you allow it to. In the mirror we find a reflection of our appearance, but in the heart, we find a reflection of our soul.

WAYS TO RESTORE YOURSELF

God restores everything. When I submit the broken pieces of my life to Him. He restores me to a beauty far more than what I prayed for. – Unknown Author

As I sit here today thinking about how great God is in our lives, I cannot help but wonder why we will not just be still, get out of God’s way and allow Him to restore our lives. Often times, we read God’s Word, pray, and meditate but forget to let God order our daily steps and thoughts. We have to remember that we cannot restore ourselves as we go through the grief and isolation period, but we must be restored by God, our Maker and Creator. What better way to be totally restored than to spend quality time journaling through grief and isolation?

  • Rest when your body says rest. When you listen to your body and give yourself the rest you need, you’ll rebuild your energy over the long-term.
  • Cultivate stillness within you. Allow yourself to feel the stillness around you, letting it soak into your body.
  • Practice whole-body breathing. Feel your breath inside your body and notice how far it reaches within you.
  • Nourish your body wholeheartedly. Be conscious and heartfelt in how you nourish your body by choosing healthy foods that feel inherently good for you.
  • Explore gentle and restorative movement. Light walking, stretching, yoga can help you regain energy in your body and life.
  • Have compassion for yourself. Be gentle with yourself when you’re exhausted and treat yourself kindly. Be kind in your thoughts and feelings towards yourself.

Finally, whether you’re just starting to journal through grief and isolation or you’ve been doing this process for some time now, it’s important to realize that you have the power to cultivate positive energy within your body in any given moment. Yes, even when you are exhausted, burned out, experiencing grief, going through isolation, and feel like you’ve got nothing left to give, your body can guide you to a peaceful place of greater vitality, and inner strength.  Remember, it’s important not to forget where God has taken us from but knowing that God still has plans for our lives. To be totally restored takes time as well as our precious minds focused on God and His greatness. Then, and only then will God renew us with hope and joy leaving us with much needed anticipation for eternity.

  • Why do you feel the way you do about the event?
  • What is one thing outside my control that I need to stop worrying about?
  • Why do you feel guilty about the event or the outcome?

From my experience, it is important to have your guard down when making the decision to practice self-reflection through journaling. Remember, there is no wrong or right way to do this process, you just need to write! No overthinking or edits on paper, just write your honest thoughts and feelings down. Never be afraid to sit in your truth and re-arrange broken patterns. Stay patient and trust your journey.

CONCEPTS TO IMPROVE LIFE’S INSPIRATION

These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb. – Unknown Author

An inspiring person has two core beliefs:

  • To believe in themselves.
  • 2) To believe in others.

When people speak of their personal ambitions, it is with great passion, optimism, and enthusiasm. Now, here’s some important concepts that are required in order for you to improve life’s inspiration:

Goal Setting

If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things. – Albert Einstein

Goal setting is important in every aspect of your life. To pursue new ideas or strive to reach your dreams, you must have a plan to do so. Here’s some steps to follow when goal setting:

  • Identify what you want and name your specific goal(s). Identify one or two things you want most and set these as your beginning goals, such as weight loss, building stronger relationships, being a better person, etc.
  • Write your goal(s) down and write the steps needed to facilitate the goal(s). Make sure to include changes in habits and lifestyle that must take place.
  • Take each of the steps you wrote down and incorporate them into your current lifestyle.
  • Begin to visualize yourself after your goals are achieved.
  • Evaluate your progress as you move through the steps you’ve identified as necessary to reach your goals and adjust your efforts as needed.

Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is a super power. Once you start to believe in yourself, magic starts happening. – Unknown Author

Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, but if we are honest with ourselves, we sometimes struggle to find it. There are two main things that contribute to self-confidence: self-efficacy (when we see ourselves and others mastering skills and achieving goals) and self-esteem (we cope with what’s going on in our lives and know that we have a right to be happy). Here’s some ways to build self-confidence in your daily routine:

  • Prepare for your journey. Look at what you’ve already achieved, think about your strengths, think about what’s important to you, and where you want to go in life.
  • Set out on your journey. Build the knowledge you need to succeed, focus on the basics, set small goals and achieve them.
  • Accelerate towards success. By this point, you should feel your self-confidence building from within. Keep yourself grounded and always aware of how you feel throughout this process.

Self-Reflection

Where you are a year from now is a reflection of the choices you choose to make right now. – Unknown Author

Self-reflection is a process of examining one’s own thoughts, feelings, and sensations to gain better insight of one’s life. Self-reflection allows you to:

  • Notice negative patterns in your life.
  • Keeps you focused on the bigger picture.
  • Prevents you from worrying about things out of your control.
  • Helps you face your fears.
  • Allows you to clearly define happiness on your own terms.
  • Allows you to make decisions based on your conscience.

Self- Discipline

Self-Discipline is a key ingredient to success. – Unknown Author

Self-discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind, and is therefore one of the most important requirements for achieving goals. Here’s some effective ways to help improve self-discipline:

  • Practice mindfulness meditation to help refresh yourself.
  • Think in milestones which includes smaller tasks and healthy habits.
  • Embrace discomfort in order to learn from mistakes and grow.
  • Create daily to-do list and plan to complete tasks.
  • Stay consistent and track your progress.
  • Set rewards to treat yourself from time to time.
  • Set consequences when you fail to meet your expectations.

Self-Care

Saying no can be the best form of self-care. – Unknown Author

Prioritizing everyone else in your life may seem honorable, but the reality is, totally neglecting yourself isn’t good for anyone. In order to take care of others, you first need to take care of yourself. Here’s some great ways to practice self-care throughout your journey:

  • Make time for exercise or yoga.
  • Read an inspirational book or read positive affirmations.
  • Listen to soothing music with your eyes closed.
  • Create a relaxing routine (warm bath, meditation, reading, writing in your journal).
  • Get out in nature (go for a walk, run, or hike).

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I want to take this opportunity to share an encouraging word with you. Every situation in life is meant to be temporary. When life is going as planned, make sure to enjoy every moment. And when life is not going as planned, know that it will not last forever and better days are sure to follow.

Have you ever tried journaling for encouragement? For those of you who are not familiar with the term journaling, here is the definition:

Journaling can be defined as a record of experiences, ideas, or reflections kept regularly for private use (diary).

When you decide to do some journaling, make sure to start with the date and start with small talk. If you are stuck, just ask yourself a question to get started. For example, “what was the best thing that happened this week”?

DEFINE JOURNAL & GRATITUDE

Inhale the future, exhale the past. – Unknown Author

First, let’s take a moment to define journal and gratitude.

A journal is a reflection of who you are, it’s a repository for all of the things that interest and inspire you. A journal provides a safe environment to experiment with your writing style and technique. Simply put, when you write in a journal it becomes your personal journey of creative and heart felt thoughts.

Gratitude as the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and return kindness. Simply put, gratitude changes everything. Gratitude is one of the sweet shortcuts to finding peace of mind and happiness inside no matter what you might be going through in life. Gratitude changes the way we start the day, spend the day, and look back on the day. For me, my day always begins and ends with gratitude. How about yours?

JOURNALING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Gratitude is the healthiest of all emotions. – Unknown Author

Now, let’s take journaling to the next level. How about improving gratitude through journaling? After all, journaling is a way to capture ideas and keep your dreams alive until you can put them in motion, right? Ideas can be found all around you. Take a moment and look around you right where you are. Inspiration is not required to knock at your door twice. We have to be ready and willing to do what’s necessary to grow, to learn, and most importantly, to be grateful.

5 TIPS FOR CAPTURING YOUR BEST JOURNAL IDEAS

Stay patient and trust your journey. – Unknown Author

1. Take your journal everywhere you go to capture those special thoughts or moments as they happen. If your journal is too big, you can always buy a small notebook to use while you are on the go. Then, transfer or glue your notes in your journal at a later time.

2. Select a journal that feels right to you. You can purchase a beautifully crafted handmade journal, a hardcover book with unlined pages, a softcover notebook with lined pages, a 3-ring binder with loose paper, or just a spiral notebook. It really doesn’t matter your style, just make sure that your journal feels right to you and you can comfortably use it to capture your thoughts.

3. Handwrite your journal entries so you are unable to edit your thoughts. Handwriting keeps things more spontaneous and also gives you clues about your emotional state. If you’re anything like me, you can tell what you’re feeling just by analyzing the state of your writing.

4. Create an informal table of contents in the beginning of each journal. Number each page and try to list the topics covered as you go along. This makes finding stuff a lot easier down the road or when you just want to reflect on some of your past writings. Don’t worry about doing this each time you journal, but make sure to complete this step before starting your next journal.

5. Don’t worry about format, grammar, or spelling. Remember, this is your personal space and a written account for how you feel right now in this very moment. Don’t worry about following your traditional writing rules, just write.

GRATITUDE IS A LIFESTYLE

The most beautiful way to start and end your day is with a grateful heart. – Unknown Author

Moreover, gratitude is a lifestyle that you choose. Overtime, choosing gratitude means choosing joy. It’s a choice that requires constantly renewing of your mind with the truth of God’s Word, setting your heart to inspire others with creativity from within, and disciplining your tongue to speak words that reflect God’s goodness and His grace. Honestly, I believe a grateful spirit, rooted in the soil of God’s goodness and grace, will impact how you view and respond to everything in your life. When gratitude becomes your default setting, life changes in a positive way.

GRATITUDE AFFIRMATION

Today I am grateful for all that I am, all that I have and all that is. – Unknown Author

I am grateful for another opportunity that life offers me on today. I am grateful for a fresh start, a brand- new way of thinking and a positive outlook on life. I am grateful for the fact that I can learn from my mistakes, and then let them go. I am grateful for my mind, body, and spirit functioning in a way to inspire others using encouraging words from the soul. I am grateful to have God as my guide, my supporter, and my protector. TIPS FOR STARTING A GRATITUDE JOURNAL

Gratitude helps you fall in love with the life you already have. – Unknown Author

A gratitude journal is a diary of things for which one is grateful. Gratitude journals are used by individuals who wish to focus their attention on the positive things in their lives. Start a gratitude journal to include a personal reflection (goals, thoughts, feelings), affirmation, scriptures, poems, quotes, kind gestures (writing notes, letters, or making phone calls). Be creative and honest. This process will change your life in a positive and uplifting way.

Here’s some tips to help you start a gratitude journal:

• Choose a journal or notebook that will inspire you to write. You can purchase a journal or make a it. Some people prefer lined pages and other people prefer unlined pages. It’s up to you.

• Determine when you’ll write. When you want to create a new habit, the easiest thing is to do it together with something you’re already doing in your life. For example, add journaling to your morning or bed time routine. Yes, it is that simple.

• Use journal prompts to help you get the most from your journaling experience. When you use different journal prompts, you will quickly learn which gives you the best feeling and inspire you to change. Note – I include journal prompts at the end of each blog post.

• Connect with the emotion. When you experience that feeling, write down what you’re grateful for and enjoy the feeling of gratefulness. Be open and honest throughout the process.

• Do what works for you. Remember, there are no rules to follow. Try it throughout this difficult time and I am sure you will not be disappointed.
