Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Today is National Grief Awareness Day. I thought it would be beneficial to set aside some time just to speak about this very important topic.

WHAT IS NATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY?

No matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn’t stop for your grief. – Faraaz Kazi

National Grief Awareness Day takes place every year on August 30th. The purpose of this day is to acknowledge and raise awareness of how individuals cope with grief and loss. This loss is most often associated with the death of a loved one, but it can also be the result of other life altering situations that may occur in a person’s life, such as:

  • Divorce or relationship breakup
  • Loss of health
  • Losing a job
  • Loss of financial stability
  • A miscarriage
  • Retirement
  • Death of a pet
  • Loss of a cherished dream
  • A loved one’s serious illness
  • Loss of a friendship
  • Loss of safety after a trauma

It’s important to keep in mind that coping with the loss of someone or something you love is one of life’s biggest challenges.

THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom. – Rumi

A psychiatrist by the name of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross introduced the “five stages of grief.” These stages of grief were based on her studies of the feelings of patients facing terminal illness, but many people have generalized them to other types of negative life changes and losses, such as the death of a loved one or relationship breakup.

Here’s the five stages of grief:

#1 – Denial – “This can’t be happening to me.”

#2 – Anger – “Why is this happening? Who is to blame?”

#3 – Bargaining – “Make this not happen, and in return I will _______.”

#4 – Depression – “I’m too sad to do anything.”

#5 – Acceptance – “I’m at peace with what happened.”

Although experiencing grief is natural, it’s important to find healthy ways to cope with grief.

9 HEALTHY WAYS TO COPE WITH GRIEF

There is no pushing through. But rather, there is absorption. Adjustment. Acceptance. And grief is not something you complete, but rather, you endure. Despite all of the mixed emotions you feel while grieving, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain, come to terms with your grief, and eventually, find a way to pick up the pieces and move on with your life. Let’s discuss a few of them now.

HOW TO SUPPORT GRIEVING LOVED ONES

When the heart grieves, the soul makes a promise. Love will never leave you. – Angie Weiland-Crosby

As individuals are grieving, it’s important to realize that when we lose a loved one, we are losing a part of our lives. Unfortunately, we will never be the same. In most cases, our mental and physical health may suffer as a result.

Here’s three ways to support grieving loved ones:

  1. Offer them time and space. Your loved one may be feeling all kinds of emotions. Remember to offer them time and space to sort through anything that they may be feeling. Let them know that you are there for them when they want to visit or talk.
  2. Spend time with them. Be available to spend time with your loved one. Let them talk when they are ready. Encourage them to share positive memories and to stay active.
  3.  Talk to a health care professional or licensed therapist. If your loved one seem to be depressed or abusing drugs/alcohol, talk to a health care professional or a licensed therapist. Offering your loved one support is the best thing to do.

The grief and loss process varies from person to person. When you’re left alone to work through your thoughts, feelings, and emotions seem to be the most difficult time for most people. What’s important to understand is the only way to get through grief is to sit with it, experience it, and talk about it. National Grief Awareness Day reminds us to open our eyes and hearts to the grieving among us. Since grief can come in waves for some people, stay in contact with your loved one and make sure they are aware of your availability during their time of need. After all, grief is not only for one day, but it’s for a life time.

  • Prioritize problems and fears – Journaling helps you to see your triggers more clearly so you can prioritize and solve your problems and fears.
  • Allow yourself to self-reflect – Don’t over think your written entries, just write honestly and make time for self-reflection.

WAYS TO RESTORE YOURSELF

God restores everything. When I submit the broken pieces of my life to Him. He restores me to a beauty far more than what I prayed for. – Unknown Author

As I sit here today thinking about how great God is in our lives, I cannot help but wonder why we will not just be still, get out of God’s way and allow Him to restore our lives. Often times, we read God’s Word, pray, and meditate but forget to let God order our daily steps and thoughts. We have to remember that we cannot restore ourselves as we go through the grief and isolation period, but we must be restored by God, our Maker and Creator. What better way to be totally restored than to spend quality time journaling through grief and isolation?

  • Rest when your body says rest. When you listen to your body and give yourself the rest you need, you’ll rebuild your energy over the long-term.
  • Cultivate stillness within you. Allow yourself to feel the stillness around you, letting it soak into your body.
  • Practice whole-body breathing. Feel your breath inside your body and notice how far it reaches within you.
  • Nourish your body wholeheartedly. Be conscious and heartfelt in how you nourish your body by choosing healthy foods that feel inherently good for you.
  • Explore gentle and restorative movement. Light walking, stretching, yoga can help you regain energy in your body and life.
  • Have compassion for yourself. Be gentle with yourself when you’re exhausted and treat yourself kindly. Be kind in your thoughts and feelings towards yourself.

Finally, whether you’re just starting to journal through grief and isolation or you’ve been doing this process for some time now, it’s important to realize that you have the power to cultivate positive energy within your body in any given moment. Yes, even when you are exhausted, burned out, experiencing grief, going through isolation, and feel like you’ve got nothing left to give, your body can guide you to a peaceful place of greater vitality, and inner strength.  Remember, it’s important not to forget where God has taken us from but knowing that God still has plans for our lives. To be totally restored takes time as well as our precious minds focused on God and His greatness. Then, and only then will God renew us with hope and joy leaving us with much needed anticipation for eternity.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Let’s discuss some ways that you can cope with grief by practicing self-care regularly. So, what is self-care? According to The Self-Care Solution written by Suzy Reading, self-care can be defined as any life-giving activity that restores, sustains or improves your health.

WHY SELF-CARE IS IMPORTANT

Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to others and watch yourself bloom. – Unknown Author

Self-care is nourishment for your mind, body and spirit. Self-care can also help people become the best version of themselves when they learn effective ways to navigate through life.

Suzy Reading provides 3 reasons why self-care is important:

  1. Stress is not going to go away. Stress is a normal part of life. In fact, life would be boring without some stress to keep us on our toes, right?
  2. Stress has a cumulative effect. Stress can add up very quickly so make sure to plan for regular pressure releases throughout your day. For example, go for a walk, do a stretch routine or meditate.
  3. Too much stress is dangerous. It’s a fact that too much stress makes us ill and greatly diminishes our ability to enjoy life.

7 SELF-CARE TIPS FOR GRIEF

Self-care is how you take your power back. – Lalah Della

Let’s be honest. It’s hard to think about yourself when you’re experiencing grief. There’s so many thoughts, feelings and emotions swirling around in your head all at once. Unfortunately, grief takes over your reality and your own needs tend to fall by the wayside.

Here’s 7 self-care tips for grief that can help you keep a calm mind, body and spirit:

Tip #1 – Breathe Mindfully – Take time to breathe slowly and focus on your natural breath. This process will put your mind in the present moment.

Tip #2 – Be Kind to Yourself – Being kind to yourself has tremendous healing power. Treat yourself as you would treat a beloved friend. Give yourself space to feel the pain of grief and allow your heart to break.

Tip #3 – Let Yourself Cry – If you feel the need to cry, then let your tears flow. Crying is a gate way to your total healing experience.

Tip #4 – Pray and Meditate Regularly– Despite how bad you’re feeling inside, it’s important to spend time in prayer and meditation. This process will help clear your mind and keep you in the present. Consistency is key so start with 10 to 20 minutes per day.

Tip #5 – Connect with Others – No matter how difficult it may be, it’s important for you to have interaction with people you trust. However, if you feel like your support system has fallen apart, then find a compassionate grief counselor or therapist to speak with.

Tip #6 – Move Your Body – Push yourself to move your body. Take a walk outside, practice doing yoga or try a new exercise class. Exercise does the whole body good. Exercise will help you sleep better and offer you a healthier option to release stress during this difficult time.

Tip #7 – Express Yourself Through Creativity – Allowing yourself to spend time writing in your journal, drawing, coloring or knitting can help you focus on activating your creative side of your brain.

As you can see, grief can manifest itself physically, mentally, and emotionally. If you are not careful, grief can throw off your whole life balance and really have an effect on your future health.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Today, I want to begin the sensitive discussion about grief. One thing that I’ve learned since losing my mother in 2015, there is no right or wrong way to deal with grief. Grieving is a personal process unique to the individual experiencing it. For example, some may cry, some may feel empty inside, and others may experience anger.

Coping with the loss of someone or something you love is one of life’s biggest challenges. Even though you may associate grieving with the death of a loved one, there are many other losses that may occur in one’s life that may cause grief, pain, and heartache, such as:

  • Divorce or relationship breakup
  • Loss of health
  • Losing a job
  • Loss of financial stability
  • A miscarriage
  • Retirement
  • Death of a pet
  • Loss of a cherished dream
  • A loved one’s serious illness
  • Loss of a friendship
  • Loss of safety after a trauma

Who doesn’t want to improve their life in some way or another, right? I would love to start this month’s discussion on learning how to improve self-control. • Exercise regularly
  • Lose weight
  • Eat healthier
  • Stop procrastinating
  • Give up unhealthy habits

7 SIMPLE STEPS TO IMPROVE SELF-CONTROL

Mastering self-control, the act of restraining one’s emotions is the true key to success. – Timothy Pina

Now, that we have a better understanding of what self-control is, it’s time to discuss the 7 simple steps to improve self-control in your life. Improving self-control has a lot to do with knowing who you are and understanding your personal interests as well as your own thought patterns.

Here’s 7 simple steps to improve self-control in your life:

#1 – Know Your True Self

When working to make any sort of change in your life, it’s important to know your true self. Begin to dig deep down inside and find out why you want to change in the first place. The best way to do this is to set aside quiet time for yourself every day to pray, meditate, and to recite positive mantras/affirmations.

#2 – Reconcile Your Past & Forgive Yourself

Even though we’ve all experienced hurt and pain in our past, it doesn’t mean we have to live with it in our present life. You’ll never know your true peace until you let go of feelings, such as insecurity, guilt, anger, and shame. Then, forgive yourself for past mistakes you’ve made and focus on the present.

#3 – Prioritize Your Life

In order to prioritize your life, you must have a written record of what’s important for you on a daily basis. Create a daily to-do list with your top 3 to 5 things that you want to get done. Always use this list as a guide, but also be flexible with yourself if you need to make changes throughout the day.

#4 – Remove Temptation

Removing temptation from your life is easier said than done. However, it’s an important step to making self-control a reality. When you remove temptation from your presence, you set yourself up for success by managing yourself and your surroundings.

#5 – Manage Stressful Situations

Learning how to manage stress in healthy ways ensures you have the positive energy to keep pressing forward during life’s most challenging times. Let’s face it, situations in our lives cause us to feel stress sometimes, but we have to learn how to not react in a negative way. Take a quick break and go walk outside.

#6 – Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is probably the fastest way to see ourselves through the eyes of others. You will learn how to observe the finer details in life and live in the present moment. You will gain a greater appreciation for not only yourself, but for those who are around you. Compliment others and notice the difference it makes in the moment.

#7 – Measure Your Progress

Like anything in life, it’s important to measure your progress. This will keep you focused on your goals, allow you to become an expert on your own behavior, and it makes habits less difficult to change. You can keep a journal or invest in a smart watch/phone to track your progress for various goals.

Believe in yourself, be patient, and always show yourself compassion. Be mindful of how you affect yourself with your daily choices, and you will be inspired to improve your self-control.  My challenge for you today is to gain greater self-control by setting realistic goals for yourself. Then, determine what works and don’t work for you. Make the necessary adjustments and you’ll be on your way to conquering the concept of self-control.

NEW BLOGGING & WRITING ENDEAVORS

In order to reach some of your blogging and writing endeavors, you have to learn various skills, such as how to market your blog content or how to publish your first book. Often times you spend hours researching, planning and writing your blog posts and/or your book. Then, you spend more time sharing your blog content or promoting your book on social media hoping that the right people see it.

What I’ve found during this year, is that it’s important for you to learn how to implement your marketing plan so the right people see your written content. In the blogging and writing industry this is a process called email marketing.

7 WAYS TO IMPROVE EMAIL MARKETING

Email marketing can be defined as the use of email to promote products or services while developing relationships with potential customers or clients. Email marketing allows you to target your audience as well as keep them informed and engaged. The two biggest advantages of email marketing are price and ease. Email marketing can also lead to increased sales and customer loyalty.

Here’s 7 ways to improve email marketing:

#1 – Select an email marketing platform. There’s a number of different email marketing platforms to choose from, such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact. However, I chose to use ConvertKit because the free version allows you to do basic email marketing functions up to 1,000 subscribers and you are given access to their free webinars.

#2 – Build your own contact list. Building your own contact list is a great way for you to find new customers, nurture leads, and increase your conversion rates. However, make it clear to your audience when they are opting in or signing up to receive these emails.

#3 – Follow the law. It’s important to adhere to the rules of the CAN-SPAM Act. These rules include having a non-deceptive subject line, providing a clear way to unsubscribe, and including your name and address at the end of the emails.

#4 – Mix up your messages. Be creative and use emails to build rapport with customers. Don’t just send out ads to buy your product or service, but provide helpful tips and insights that will provide value to your customers.

#5 – Respect your subscribers. Remember your customers have trusted you with their information. Your customers deserve respect and they love to feel special when receiving valuable products and services.

#6 – Follow a schedule. Stick to an email schedule week to week. Sending out an email on the same day every week will help your customers know what to expect from you and when. This helps to build trust and a stronger customer relationship.

#7 – Optimize for mobile use. Make sure that your emails are optimized and are able to be opened on mobile devices.

Compared to other types of marketing, email marketing is an inexpensive way to advertise your content, product or services. Also, email marketing is an effective sales driver when done correctly. When done wrong, email marketing can come across as spam that annoys customers.

5 WAYS TO PRACTICE SELF-REFLECTION THROUGH JOURNALING

Be a reflection of what you’d like to receive. If you want love, give love. If you want truth, be truthful. If you want respect, give respect. What you give out will always return. – Kristen Butler

During this journey we call life, it’s important to realize that you have the power to cultivate positive energy within your body in any given moment. Yes, even when you are exhausted, burned out and feel like you have got nothing left to give, your body can guide you to a peaceful place of greater vitality, inner strength, and well-being.

Now, let’s take a moment to discuss 5 ways to practice self-reflection through journaling.

#1 – Cultivate stillness within you and reflect on these questions:

  • What habits did you achieve today, this week or this month?
  • What could you improve on in your life?
  • Where were you this time last year and what have you learned since then?

#2 – Practice prayer & meditation and reflect on these questions:

  • What is on your mind right now in this very moment?
  • What is your prayer for today?
  • Do you pay attention to your breathing while you are practicing meditation?

#3 – Write in your journal and reflect on these questions:

  • What is the easiest way to get your thoughts and feelings out on paper?
  • What is an experience that changed your outlook on life?
  • Do you re-read your journal entries to find patterns in your daily habits or thoughts?

#4 – Analyze a past event and reflect on these questions:

  • Why do you feel the way you do about the event?
  • What is one thing outside your control that you need to stop worrying about?
  • Why do you feel guilty about the event or the outcome?

#5 – Make decisions that align with your values and reflect on these questions:

  •  What kinds of things do you value in life?
  • What helps you make sound and confident decisions?
  • What is something that keeps you grounded along your journey?

As you can see, journaling is a safe place to practice self-reflection, your time to just write how you feel, and no one will ever know. From my experience, it is important to have your guard down when making the decision to practice self-reflection through journaling. Remember, there is no wrong or right way to do this process, you just need to write! No overthinking or edits on paper, just write your honest thoughts and feelings down. Never be afraid to sit in your truth and re-arrange broken patterns. Stay patient and trust your self-reflection journey.

5 WAYS YOU CAN RISE ABOVE WRITING CHALLENGES

You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. – Maya Angelou

Often times people live a life full of disappointment and unhappiness. I believe that it’s the writer’s responsibility to show people their inner potential and ability to create happiness in life. In addition, the writer can help people change their lifestyles and grow from within.

Here’s 5 ways you can rise above writing challenges:

  • #1 – Change your mindset – You must believe in yourself and stop the negative self-talk. Instead, build yourself up by reciting positive quotes and affirmations.
  • #2 – Create a writing schedule – Prioritize your writing time and create a writing schedule that you can stick to. However, be kind to yourself and provide grace when you need a break.
  • #3 – Turn off your inner critic – Give yourself permission to write freely and know that it’s okay to make mistakes. You have no time for self-doubt, but instead encourage yourself often.
  • #4 – Join writer’s groups or find an accountability partner – There’s something powerful about being around like-minded individuals. Check your social media accounts for interested writers or ask your family and friends.
  • #5 – Regular journal writing – Regular journal writing can help improve your overall writing skills. In addition, journal writing can provide you with additional writing topics as well.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course to victory. – Arthur Golden

As you set yourself up for success throughout this mindful journey, please keep these things in mind as you begin to change your mindset:

  • Positive thoughts equal positive outcomes
  • Admit that your thinking needs to be adjusted
  • Seek positive support from family, friends, support groups
  • Immerse yourself in personal growth – Read inspirational books or listen to positive speakers
  • Forward thinking will move your focus away from where you don’t want to be to where you could be

Finally, improving your life starts with improving your growth mindset.

  • Write in your journal every day.
  • Write thank you notes to people who help you throughout your journey.
  • Read positive affirmations and quotes often
  • Write a Wins Checklist based on your best experiences and accomplishments.
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Look at how you sleep, what you eat and how much/little you exercise.

I have really enjoyed my blogging experiences and the time spent writing my first book. I have met so many wonderful and talented bloggers/authors along my writing journey. Although writing has helped me stay grounded in my life, inspiring people has got to be one of the most rewarding parts for being a writer. Today, I encourage you to keep rising above your writing challenges. Only this kind of persistence will allow you to pour your heart and soul into your written work. Peace, blessings, and happy writing!

Journal writing allows you to track patterns, trends, improvement and growth over time. By regularly recording your thoughts you will gain insight into your behaviors and moods. Journal writing may also provide the following benefits throughout your journey:

#1 Learn How to Practice Mindfulness & Meditation

Writing in your journal brings you into a peaceful state of mindfulness; past frustrations and future anxieties lose their edge in the present moment. Journal writing and mindfulness can assist you with developing a deeper connection with yourself as well.

  • What thought patterns do you have and how do they impact your life?
  • How can you improve your mindset so you can love yourself more?
  • What can make you develop a deeper connection with yourself?

#2 Include Self-Discipline in Your Lifestyle

Developing a set time to write in your journal is an act of self-discipline. The more you exercise this healthy habit, the better you become as a person. Your daily writing practice will spread to other areas of your life.

  • What do you really need to change in your life?
  • How do you plan to improve self-discipline?
  • What good habit do you want to develop over time?

#3 Achieve Goals & Dreams

Journal writing allows you to write down your personal goals and pursue your dreams so you can develop a solid plan to reach them.

  • What do you need to believe to accomplish this goal/dream?
  • What kind of energy could you approach this goal/dream with?
  • If you believed it was possible, what actions would you take to achieve your goals/dreams?

#4 Brainstorm Ideas & Organize Thoughts

Writing in your journal is a great way to help you brainstorm ideas and organize thoughts by keeping them in one safe place. At any point, you can go back to your journal to find connections, reminders, and to help birth new ideas.

  • Do you prefer to brainstorm ideas & organize thoughts during your writing process?
  • Do you think journal writing helps you sort through problems that may occur in life?
  • How often do you use journal writing to brainstorm ideas & organize your thoughts?

#5 Reduce Stressful Situations

If you allow yourself to write in your journal daily, you will reduce stressful situations in your life. Journal writing will help you to release all your negative thoughts and feelings so you will not keep them held up inside.

  • What can you do to reduce stress in your life?
  • What is one behavior that you need to let go of?
  • What methods do you use to reduce stress?

#6 Be Inspired and Spark Your Creativity

When you make the decision to be inspired, you will open up the flow of creativity in your life. Allow time to write in your journal every morning and in the evening before going to bed. This process will help you be consistent with your creative flow and explore many possibilities that exist within your environment.

  • What gives you inspiration on any given day?
  • How do you spark your creativity throughout your journey?
  • What helps you open up the flow of creativity in your life?

#7 Schedule Time for Self-Reflection

Pouring your inner thoughts and feelings out in your journal is a form of self-reflection. You may choose to look back at your journal entries and think about how you’ve changed as a person. Self-reflection can also result in mental clarity and allows writers to reconnect within.

  • What is your greatest quest in life?
  • What is your vision for your life in the next 3 years?
  • What advice do you need to give to yourself right now in this very moment?

 #8 Work Towards Total Healing

Journal writing is an expressive way to reduce stress in your life and guide you to a permanent form of healing. Remember, consistency is key to seeing life changing results.

  • What can you do to nurture your mind, body, and spirit more?
  • What is holding you back from total healing?
  • Are you willing to participate in the healing process often?

#9 Express Gratitude Daily

Journal writing is a positive way to express gratitude in your life. It is important to start every day with an attitude of gratitude. Whether it is big or small, find at least one thing to express gratitude about every day.

  • What are you grateful for today?
  • What do you value or appreciate?
  • Who has helped you in life?

Now, close your eyes and clear your mind. Be honest with yourself and be willing to feel the words within your soul. If you allow yourself to escape for a moment, you may free yourself from emotional bondage. After a few writing sessions, you will find it easier to process your internal feelings and emotions easier.

Renewal and restoration are not luxuries, they are essentials. – Chuck Swindoll

Affiliate Disclaimer: This site contains affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you purchase through any of the links (at no additional cost to you).

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I pray that your week has been filled with love, peace, joy, and happiness. Today, I want to focus on an important topic – How to Embrace the Renewal Process Within. I encourage you to have your journal or a notebook and something to write with.

Now, tell me what is your breaking point? When do you just STOP and take a rest? When do you say “No” to others because you already have too much on your agenda? Believe it or not, most people do not acknowledge when they are overwhelmed and tired. Most of us just keep going and going until we are exhausted and burned out. This is not a healthy choice at all.

Let’s begin to embrace the renewal process by answering a few questions:

  • What do I want or need in my life right now in this very moment?
  • Are my actions guided by love or fear? faith or worry? courage or doubt?
  • Will this action bring peace or inner turmoil in my life?

When you take time to answer questions related to your life honestly, you will find out what’s important enough for you to pursue and what to ignore.

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

Renewal is what happens when you realize that some of this stuff you’ve been carrying around doesn’t matter. – Rob Bell

Next, I want you to begin using positive affirmations every day to help renew your mind, body, and spirit. Positive affirmations will help you to attract more positivity in your life and transform your thoughts. It’s important to repeat the following positive affirmations daily until they are hidden in your heart.

Here’s a few positive affirmations to help you get started:

  • I am filled with gratitude.
  • I am worthy of great things.
  • I am confident and empowered.
  • I am surrounded by love.
  • I am learning and growing.
  • I am in charge of my own self-worth.

ADVANTAGES IN LIFE

Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances. – Maya Angelou

As we go through life, it is important to realize when it is time for our renewal process to occur. Allowing time for renewal offers one so many advantages in life.  For example, a person who chooses to embrace the renewal process may experience:

  • Personal growth and expansion from the inside out.
  • A fresh start to something that will be much better, and in most cases, greater than what they were already experiencing.
  • The ability to make necessary plans and allows their mind to think of resolutions that need to take place.
  • Time to rest from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life, which can interpret to self-reflection.
  • An opportunity to transform one’s mind and body to a more refreshed state.
