Thought to Ponder – Put yourself at the top of your to-do list every day and the rest will fall in line.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! This is a great time of the year to discuss ways to establish a self-care routine that can help improve your health and wellness. So, what is self-care? According to The Self-Care Solution written by Suzy Reading, self-care can be defined as “any life-giving activity that restores, sustains or improves your health.” Similarly, Dr. Marni Amsellem defines self-care as “anything that you do for yourself that feels nourishing.” So, it’s safe to say that self-care is nourishment for your entire soul, mind, body, and spirit. Would you agree?

WHY SELF-CARE IS IMPORTANT

Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to others and watch yourself bloom. – Unknown Author

As we go through life, all of us experience stress on some level one way or another. It’s so important that we have the necessary tools to help promote healing and cultivate clarity in our lives.

Suzy Reading provides 3 reasons why self-care is important:

  • Stress is not going to go away. Stress is a normal part of life. In fact, life would be boring without some stress to keep us on our toes, right?
  • Stress has a cumulative effect. Stress can add up very quickly so make sure to plan for regular pressure releases throughout your day. For example, go for a walk, do a stretch routine or meditate.
  • Too much stress is dangerous. It’s a fact that too much stress makes us ill and greatly diminishes our ability to enjoy life.

Brene Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

HOW DOES SELF-CARE HELP?

Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure. – Oprah Winfrey

Suzy Reading provides ways that self-care helps us throughout life:

  • Self-care helps you cope with life changing events, such as an illness, the loss of a loved one, depression, parents adjusting to life with a newborn, etc.
  • Self-care helps us recover after experiencing life changing events, such as the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, divorce, etc.
  • Self-care offers us a protective function, forming a buffer against future stress. If you are able to prepare yourself before a life changing event occurs, then do it. For example, schedule a vacation or some peaceful alone time before the birth of a child, the finalization of an adoption, getting married, starting college, or moving into a new home.
  • Self-care helps us to flourish as individuals and to become the best version of themselves. For example, you may be striving to become a better parent, a better spouse, in search of a new career, or preparing for retirement.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with life’s events, prioritize soothing activities and choices that restore balance to your life.

SELF-CARE AFFIRMATIONS

Be enough for yourself first, the rest of the world can wait. – Unknown Author

Self-care affirmations will help you to focus on improving yourself. You can spend 5 – 10 minutes in meditation, journaling, or yoga with mantras. Self-love, positivity, open-mindedness, help set you in the right direction. Designate a time in the morning and at night when you can recite affirmations aloud. By saying them aloud, you hear the powerful words, and it can help you internalize them as true. The key to seeing a positive change in life is to say the affirmations with conviction and make it personal.

Here’s a few of my favorite self-care affirmations to help you get started:

  • I love and respect myself.
  • I know my value and self-worth.
  • I care about myself and listen to all of my needs.
  • I am strong, resilient, and smart.
  • I treat myself with love, kindness, and acceptance.
  • I am powerful, healthy, and capable.
  • I am free of self-doubt and insecurities because I am confident.
  • I am centered, at peace, and in love with myself.
  • I affirm empowering and kind messages to myself.
  • I set healthy boundaries and stick to them.
  • I always focus on the positive side of life.
  • I embrace my past and learn from it every day.
  • I am not my mistakes or my past.
  • I release myself of any misery and suffering.

Worrying is a waste of time. It doesn’t change anything; it just clouds your mind and steals your happiness. – Unknown Author

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! If you live your life constantly worrying about things that are out of your control or have anxiety that cause you to stray away from things you love to do, then it’s time to learn how to lessen worry and anxiety for good.

Let’s face it, we all have issues that we worry about, right? Sometimes we’re not even aware of why we’re worrying, when we’re doing it or what we tend to worry about the most. We just know that we often feel anxious and we find ourselves stuck in a vicious cycle of worry. One of the ways to break this vicious cycle is to be aware of the things that trigger these emotions.

Here’s a few questions that you can ask yourself:

  • Do you find yourself worrying or feeling anxious when you’re in certain places?
  • Do you find yourself worrying or feeling anxious during a particular time of the day?
  • Do you find yourself worrying or feeling anxious when you’re around certain people?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you have started the process to identify possible triggers that may cause you to worry or experience anxiety throughout your life.

DEFINITIONS

Anxiety comes from trying too hard to control the future. – Unknown Author

Before we go any further, let’s take a moment to define anxiety and worry. Anxiety can be defined as a feeling that lives inside us and blocks us from fully living the life we want to live. Anxiety has various symptoms that can be felt anywhere in the body, such as tightness in chest, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, headaches, trembling or trouble sleeping. It’s important to note that anxiety can happen at any time and it can influence our thoughts, emotions, actions and physical health.

On the other hand, worry can give way to anxiety or unease. Worry allows one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles surrounding one’s life. Worries are a chain of thoughts based in words. For example, “What will happen if” … “It will be terrible when” … “What if I can’t”. In addition, chronic worry and emotional stress can trigger many health problems, such as fatigue, headaches, inability to concentrate, irritability, muscle aches/tension, nausea, rapid breathing, dry mouth, dizziness, and nervous energy.

Here’s some common causes for anxiety and worry:

  • Stress that can result from work, school, personal relationship
  • Emotional trauma
  • Financial concerns
  • Stress caused by a chronic or serious medical condition
  • A major event or performance
  • Side effect of certain medications
  • Alcohol or drugs consumption
  • Lack of oxygen

As you can see, experiencing worry and anxiety in our lives are natural, but when they become chronic and trapping your mind in vicious cycles with no resolutions, is when they become a problem.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES THAT CAN HELP LESSEN WORRY AND ANXIETY

Stop worrying about what can go wrong, and get excited about what can go right. – Unknown Author

It’s impossible for you to completely eliminate worry and anxiety from your life, but you can significantly lessen its hold over your life. Part of this process is learning when it might show up (triggers) and coming up with a plan to deal with it when it does (solutions).

Here’s some lifestyle changes that can help lessen worry and anxiety in your life:

  • Understand your specific symptoms. What are your thoughts when you worry or when your anxiety escalates? In what situations do your symptoms intensify? Lessen?
  • Know what works for you. Which strategies are helpful in moments when you worry the most or experience high anxiety? Examples could be deep breathing exercises, mindfulness exercises, meditation, journaling or talking with a support person.
  • You can pair deep breathing exercises with aromatherapy using a candle or essential oil diffuser to infuse the air with a calming, relaxing scent such as lavender, rose, bergamot or chamomile.
  • Ground yourself physically in a way that feels comfortable. For example, you may sit in a chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor or you can stand with your feet planted on the floor and your back pressed against a wall.
  • Schedule therapy sessions with a licensed mental health professional. Be open, honest, and willing to express how you truly feel.
  • Find a support group in your area or online to help you gain another perspective on your anxiety. Face your fears and don’t be afraid to share your experiences. Listen to others and give/receive feedback.
  • Spend some time regularly doing meditation, mindfulness exercises or yoga along with deep breathing exercises.
  • Write down your thoughts and feelings in your journal or notebook. Then, reflect on them throughout your journey.
  • Visit your local library and check out some books on worry and anxiety.

Finally, it’s important to get a clear understanding of what your triggers are and establish healthy ways to respond to them. Live in the moment and begin to divert your attention from the thoughts inside your head to what you’re doing in the present. Like any change you pursue in life, remember that it takes time to change your way of thinking and feeling. Be patient with yourself while you lessen worry and anxiety in your life.

7 SELF-CARE TIPS FOR GRIEF

Self-care is how you take your power back. – Lalah Della

Let’s be honest. It’s hard to think about yourself when you’re experiencing grief. There’s so many thoughts, feelings and emotions swirling around in your head all at once. Unfortunately, grief takes over your reality and your own needs tend to fall by the wayside.

Here’s 7 self-care tips for grief that can help you keep a calm mind, body and spirit:

Tip #1 – Breathe Mindfully – Take time to breathe slowly and focus on your natural breath. This process will put your mind in the present moment.

Tip #2 – Be Kind to Yourself – Being kind to yourself has tremendous healing power. Treat yourself as you would treat a beloved friend. Give yourself space to feel the pain of grief and allow your heart to break.

Tip #3 – Let Yourself Cry – If you feel the need to cry, then let your tears flow. Crying is a gate way to your total healing experience.

Tip #4 – Pray and Meditate Regularly– Despite how bad you’re feeling inside, it’s important to spend time in prayer and meditation. This process will help clear your mind and keep you in the present. Consistency is key so start with 10 to 20 minutes per day.

Tip #5 – Connect with Others – No matter how difficult it may be, it’s important for you to have interaction with people you trust. However, if you feel like your support system has fallen apart, then find a compassionate grief counselor or therapist to speak with.

Tip #6 – Move Your Body – Push yourself to move your body. Take a walk outside, practice doing yoga or try a new exercise class. Exercise does the whole body good. Exercise will help you sleep better and offer you a healthier option to release stress during this difficult time.

Tip #7 – Express Yourself Through Creativity – Allowing yourself to spend time writing in your journal, drawing, coloring or knitting can help you focus on activating your creative side of your brain.

As you can see, grief can manifest itself physically, mentally, and emotionally. If you are not careful, grief can throw off your whole life balance and really have an effect on your future health.

7 SIMPLE STEPS TO IMPROVE SELF-CONTROL

Mastering self-control, the act of restraining one’s emotions is the true key to success. – Timothy Pina

Now, that we have a better understanding of what self-control is, it’s time to discuss the 7 simple steps to improve self-control in your life. Improving self-control has a lot to do with knowing who you are and understanding your personal interests as well as your own thought patterns.

Here’s 7 simple steps to improve self-control in your life:

#1 – Know Your True Self

When working to make any sort of change in your life, it’s important to know your true self. Begin to dig deep down inside and find out why you want to change in the first place. The best way to do this is to set aside quiet time for yourself every day to pray, meditate, and to recite positive mantras/affirmations.

#2 – Reconcile Your Past & Forgive Yourself

Even though we’ve all experienced hurt and pain in our past, it doesn’t mean we have to live with it in our present life. You’ll never know your true peace until you let go of feelings, such as insecurity, guilt, anger, and shame. Then, forgive yourself for past mistakes you’ve made and focus on the present.

#3 – Prioritize Your Life

In order to prioritize your life, you must have a written record of what’s important for you on a daily basis. Create a daily to-do list with your top 3 to 5 things that you want to get done. Always use this list as a guide, but also be flexible with yourself if you need to make changes throughout the day.

#4 – Remove Temptation

Removing temptation from your life is easier said than done. However, it’s an important step to making self-control a reality. When you remove temptation from your presence, you set yourself up for success by managing yourself and your surroundings.

#5 – Manage Stressful Situations

Learning how to manage stress in healthy ways ensures you have the positive energy to keep pressing forward during life’s most challenging times. Let’s face it, situations in our lives cause us to feel stress sometimes, but we have to learn how to not react in a negative way. Take a quick break and go walk outside.

#6 – Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is probably the fastest way to see ourselves through the eyes of others. You will learn how to observe the finer details in life and live in the present moment. You will gain a greater appreciation for not only yourself, but for those who are around you. Compliment others and notice the difference it makes in the moment.

#7 – Measure Your Progress

Like anything in life, it’s important to measure your progress. This will keep you focused on your goals, allow you to become an expert on your own behavior, and it makes habits less difficult to change. You can keep a journal or invest in a smart watch/phone to track your progress for various goals.

Believe in yourself, be patient, and always show yourself compassion. Be mindful of how you affect yourself with your daily choices, and you will be inspired to improve your self-control.  My challenge for you today is to gain greater self-control by setting realistic goals for yourself. Then, determine what works and don’t work for you. Make the necessary adjustments and you’ll be on your way to conquering the concept of self-control.

When doing anything in life, having a personal and well-defined purpose will encourage you to stick to it. After all, life is an endless journey and each day starts a new chapter in your life. Journal writing allows you to track patterns, trends, improvement and growth over time. By regularly recording your thoughts you will gain insight into your behaviors and moods. Journal writing may also provide the following benefits throughout your journey:

#1 Learn How to Practice Mindfulness & Meditation

Writing in your journal brings you into a peaceful state of mindfulness; past frustrations and future anxieties lose their edge in the present moment. Journal writing and mindfulness can assist you with developing a deeper connection with yourself as well.

  • What thought patterns do you have and how do they impact your life?
  • How can you improve your mindset so you can love yourself more?
  • What can make you develop a deeper connection with yourself?

#2 Include Self-Discipline in Your Lifestyle

Developing a set time to write in your journal is an act of self-discipline. The more you exercise this healthy habit, the better you become as a person. Your daily writing practice will spread to other areas of your life.

  • What do you really need to change in your life?
  • How do you plan to improve self-discipline?
  • What good habit do you want to develop over time?

#3 Achieve Goals & Dreams

Journal writing allows you to write down your personal goals and pursue your dreams so you can develop a solid plan to reach them.

  • What do you need to believe to accomplish this goal/dream?
  • What kind of energy could you approach this goal/dream with?
  • If you believed it was possible, what actions would you take to achieve your goals/dreams?

#4 Brainstorm Ideas & Organize Thoughts

Writing in your journal is a great way to help you brainstorm ideas and organize thoughts by keeping them in one safe place. At any point, you can go back to your journal to find connections, reminders, and to help birth new ideas.

  • Do you prefer to brainstorm ideas & organize thoughts during your writing process?
  • Do you think journal writing helps you sort through problems that may occur in life?
  • How often do you use journal writing to brainstorm ideas & organize your thoughts?

#5 Reduce Stressful Situations

If you allow yourself to write in your journal daily, you will reduce stressful situations in your life. Journal writing will help you to release all your negative thoughts and feelings so you will not keep them held up inside.

  • What can you do to reduce stress in your life?
  • What is one behavior that you need to let go of?
  • What methods do you use to reduce stress?

#6 Be Inspired and Spark Your Creativity

When you make the decision to be inspired, you will open up the flow of creativity in your life. Allow time to write in your journal every morning and in the evening before going to bed. This process will help you be consistent with your creative flow and explore many possibilities that exist within your environment.

  • What gives you inspiration on any given day?
  • How do you spark your creativity throughout your journey?
  • What helps you open up the flow of creativity in your life?

#7 Schedule Time for Self-Reflection

Pouring your inner thoughts and feelings out in your journal is a form of self-reflection. You may choose to look back at your journal entries and think about how you’ve changed as a person. Self-reflection can also result in mental clarity and allows writers to reconnect within.

  • What is your greatest quest in life?
  • What is your vision for your life in the next 3 years?
  • What advice do you need to give to yourself right now in this very moment?

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I am truly lost and broken on today. It has been 5 years since my beautiful mother left her earthly body to be in heaven. I realize deep in my heart that she is in a better place where she will no longer be in pain while struggling to breathe due to suffering from severe COPD. I watched her change from an independent, vibrant, and feisty woman to one who struggled to care for herself on a daily basis. Watching her go through this terrible transition honestly broke me down to my core. It hurt me so much because I could not do anything to help her overcome this awful illness that she had to endure.

WAYS TO COPE WITH GRIEF DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Missing you comes in waves, tonight I’m drowning. – Unknown Author

The holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger or dread for anyone dealing with an illness, grief or the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, grief can also magnify the stress that is often already felt during the holidays. On the other hand, it’s important to note that it’s alright to have a good time in spite of your grief. Just allow yourself to feel whatever your heart is feeling in the moment.

Here’s some effective ways to cope with grief during the holidays:

  • Offer yourself some grace – Give yourself permission to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. If you feel sad, allow the tears to come; if you feel angry, allow yourself to vent some steam in a safe manner.
  • Be kind to yourself – Be sure to get plenty of rest and nourishment you need; do not take on more than you can handle; if you need to be alone, then honor that. If you desire the affection of others, seek it out.
  • Ask for and accept help – It’s okay to tell your loved ones the best way that they can help you during this difficult time. Remember, ask and you shall receive.
  • Set healthy boundaries – Choose to participate only if you’re ready and feel comfortable in the scheduled activity or event.
  • Focus on what you can control – Observe your surroundings and relationships. Then, do what makes you happy.
  • Find a way to honor your memories – Create a special way to memorialize your loved one. For example, light a candle, arrange to have a prayer vigil, release balloons, plant a tree, or create a stone garden.
  • Find support – Sharing your feelings is often the best way to get through them and finding people you can talk to will help. Family and friends can be a great support during times of grief. If they are unavailable, seek professional help from a licensed therapist, a grief counselor or grief support group in your area.
  • Make a difference in your community – Give to your favorite charity organization or purchase a gift for a needy child. Consider volunteering at a nursing home, hospital, hospice, children’s shelter or soup kitchen. This can help you cope with your grief by contributing to the greater good within your community.

Keep in mind, the best gift you can give anyone you love is that of being true to yourself and living your life to the fullest, even as you adjust to the loss of a loved one during the holidays. With time, I know I will learn to live and express myself differently, but for now writing is my first choice throughout this lost and broken journey. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! This has been a year to remember, but I don’t want to focus on the negative moments. I want to dig deeper and become hopeful again. Sometimes in life, hope is all we have to hold on to. Hope is what we feel when we think that life is worth living, when we are happy and thinking positive thoughts. Remember, happiness and optimism cannot exist without hope, but hope can exist without happiness or optimism.

DEFINITIONS

In addition, hope is a necessary emotion that helps us engage with life. Hope is directly related to our sense of possibility. The greater our perception of possibilities, the greater our hope. Now, let’s take a moment to look at the definitions of hopeful:

  • Hopeful (adjective) – feeling or inspiring optimism about a future event.
  • Hopeful (noun) – a person likely or hoping to succeed.

  • Helps control your emotions and sets the mood for the day
  • Gives you room for self-expression

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! I don’t know about you, but I am experiencing pandemic fatigue in 2020. As we watch the covid-19 case numbers and deaths rise again across the country, it’s important to realize that the stress and the fatigue of the covid-19 pandemic is still hanging over our heads. These feelings and emotions can often times cause people to be exhausted, scared and worried about some of the following:

• Catching and/or spreading covid-19 to others
• Being sick, isolated and dying in the hospital alone
• Financial concerns and losing jobs
• Caring for loved ones who has covid-19
• Going through the grieving process alone
• Feeling isolated and depressed

At the end of the day, I am at peace because my intentions are good, and my heart is pure. My main goal is to keep me and my loved ones safe during this difficult time by overcoming pandemic fatigue.

OVERCOMING PANDEMIC FATIGUE

Your storm is bigger than you are, but your Jesus is bigger than your storm. -Ron Hutchcraft

Believe it or not, it’s perfectly normal to feel burned out while trying to overcome pandemic fatigue. Pandemic fatigue can be caused from a number of emotions you’ve experienced during the pandemic, such as:

• Fear
• Anxiety
• Grief
• Loneliness
• Depression
• Hopelessness

Even though it is challenging to adapt to the increased uncertainty of the pandemic, we must find our inner peace that will help us pay attention to our emotional and physical needs.

Here’s some healthy ways to help you overcome pandemic fatigue:

Take care of your body – Make sure to get plenty of sleep, rest, and exercise. Also, eat a balance and nutritious diet.
Lower your stress – Focus on activities that are calming or bring you joy, such as yoga, nature walks, reading, writing in your journal, practicing meditation and breathing exercises, or watching a comedy.
Connect with others – Remember, we are social creatures by nature. Try to connect with others by making phone calls, arrange video meetings, chat on social media, join a virtual group, take a virtual class or attend online religious services.
Accept your feelings – Acknowledge and name your feelings. Then, refocus your mind and energy on things you can do to feel better.
Create new traditions – Set aside Sundays for self-care, Fridays as family game night or Saturday as movie night. Be creative and come up with ideas that work best for you and your loved ones.

PEACE AFFIRMATIONS

Today I choose: calm over chaos; serenity over stress; peace over perfection; grace over grit; faith over fear. – Mary Davis

Even in the midst of life’s many storms and challenges, such as the covid-19 pandemic, we have the capacity to stand in the center of our own peace. Did you know that it is important to speak peace into your life every day? Take a moment to recite the following statements with confidence:

• Today, I am totally safe and surrounded by love, light, peace, and joy.
• Today, I invite peace and harmony to dwell in me and surround me at all times.
• Today, I have the freedom and power to create the life I desire.
• Today, I believe in myself and will be my own inspiration.
• Today, I plan to water my roots, so my soul can blossom.

Keep in mind, it is important for you to know that you already have peace within you, right now, in this very moment.

FINAL THOUGHTS

One thing that I have learned in life, whether your storm is BIG or small, it takes internal strength and peace to overcome many obstacles in life. Just because you may be struggling or find yourself isolated right now, does not mean you are failing life forever. After all, as long as we are living on Earth, we will always experience some type of storm. Keep believing in yourself and stay safe while overcoming pandemic fatigue.

Welcome back to Renew Inspiration! Despite the unrest, hatred, loneliness, and fear that is often times experienced during difficult times, it is important for me to continue writing positive and uplifting messages to inspire you. As I sit here today thinking about how great God is in our lives, I cannot help but wonder why we will not just be still, get out of God’s way and allow Him to restore our souls. We read God’s Word, pray, meditate, and attend church services week after week but why do we forget to let God order our daily steps and thoughts? We have to remember that we cannot restore ourselves, but we must be restored by God, our Maker and Creator. What better way to be totally restored than to spend quality time journaling through isolation?

BENEFITS OF JOURNALING

You will never change your life, until you change something you do daily. – Unknown Author

Journaling is my safe place, my time to just write how I feel and scream on paper and no one will ever know. Let’s take a moment to define journal. A journal is a personal reflection of who you are, it’s a repository for all the things that interest and inspire you. A journal provides a safe environment to experiment with your writing style and technique. Simply put, when you write in a journal it becomes your personal journey of creative and heart felt thoughts.

Here’s some benefits of journaling through isolation:

• Reduce stress – Expressive writing has been shown to lower stress levels.

• Improve your memory – Regular journal writing can improve your short-term memory.

• Stay organized – Keeping a journal such as a weight loss diary lets you maintain an organized record of your progress.

• Strengthen your self-discipline – Journaling helps you to keep a regular writing schedule until it becomes a habit.

• Allow yourself to self-reflect – Don’t over think your written entries, just write honestly and make time for self-reflection.

• Be creative – Add photos and positive quotes to enhance your written entries.

• Clarify your thoughts and feelings – Jot down your thoughts and feelings with no editing and you will get in touch with your internal being.

As you can see, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends, improvement, and growth over time. Make sure to reflect on these thoughts often throughout your journey.
